From Tony John, Port Harcourt

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State chapter, Felix Obuah, has lauded Governor Nyesom Wike, for his interest and  investment in science education.

Obuah said no leader in the history of the state has shown remarkable commitment by re-awakening the interest of school children in science, technology and mathematics as Governor Wike.

The PDP chairman also expressed gladness that the governor’s efforts in resuscitating science education, were reciprocated by the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), when the teachers held their 60th anniversary conference in Port Harcourt and made Wike patron of the body.

Obuah, in a statement yesterday, by his media aide, Jerry Needam, said the sponsorship of 400 delegates for this year’s STAN conference, was geared towards encouraging science teachers in public schools across the state, to upgrade their knowledge of current trends in science and technology.

According to Obuah, the gesture would help in boosting the zeal of selected secondary schools that had been equipped with science laboratories by the government, as model and prototype science-based schools in line with Governor Wike’s plan to give science and technology priority in primary and post-primary institutions.

He enjoined those concerned, particularly the science and mathematics teachers, as well as the chosen prototype science-based schools, to reciprocate the governor’s efforts by showing commitment in their duties for the benefit and future development of the children.

Obuah appealed that similar and regular conferences should be organised for science, technology and mathematics teachers across the country, so that the nation could meet up the global trend in science and technology.
