Paul Osuyi, Asaba

A total of 2,457 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Thursday, took their oath of allegiance to serve their fatherland for the mandatory one year national service.

They were posted to Delta and Edo states under the Batch ‘A’ Stream II service year, and were sworn in at the Orientation Camp at Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Director General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Sule Zakari Kazaure witnessed the swearing-in ceremony presided over by the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by his deputy, Kingsley Otuaro.

Gen. Kazaure urged the corps members to shun violence, cultism and be security conscious, adding that they should be engaged in skill acquisition programme during the service year.

Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mr. Omotade Benjamin, disclosed that as at midnight of Wednesday, 1,589 comprising 776 males and 813 females were duly registered for Delta State.

“For Edo State, we registered 868 corps members comprising 481 males and 387 females. They are fully prepared to take the oath of allegiance this morning,” he said.

He noted that Edo and Delta states were created from the defunct Bendel State, adding that they “are peaceful states where you will not only find them virile and fertile to incubate and generate positive development ideas, they will also support you to grow to full potentials.

“The government and people of these two states are highly responsive and hospitable. Prepare your minds to settle down and imprint your names in the sands of time in the various communities where you will find yourselves at the end of the orientation course,” he admonished.

Addressing the corps members, Governor Okowa explained that the orientation course is the first of the cardinal programs designed to expose “you to the ideas of the scheme. The call to service that you have responded to today, is a call to dedication to our fatherland. It is therefore important that you apply yourselves fully to the physical and psychological training you will be subjected to.

“The orientation exercise is designed to instill in you, the requisite leadership qualities of perseverance, endurance of mind and purpose, including the ability to live amicably and peacefully with others from different socio-cultural backgrounds,” the governor said.

He urged the corps members to be patriotic and selfless during the period of their primary assignment, urging them to be guided by the exemplary and selfless conduct of their predecessors in the discharge of their duties.
