Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Rasheed Abubakar, has attributed the obvious gap in Nigeria education management system to absence of accurate and reliable data needed to formulate and implement educational policies.

He said the absence of data weakened the efforts of both local education planners and their foreign partners to dissect and critically analyze the performance of Nigerian education and possibly make inputs and adjustments where necessary.

He was addressing the directors of academic planning from the 153 Nigerian universities in Abuja yesterday.

He said the institutions were guilty of not having in their data bank, details of their current and past students, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

He said it was shameful for a top management of a university in Nigeria like the Vice Chancellor or Director of Academic Planning to chuckle each time an impromptu question that concerned statistical data of their schools was thrown at them.

He said: “These are pieces of information that ordinarily should be at the fingers’ tips of these top officials but otherwise was the case.

“The detailed information should contain the accurate number of male, female students admitted and graduated in a particular year, breakdown of their courses of study, age brackets, state of origin, graduated secondary school and several other important details.
