The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), has deployed over 12,000 personnel in community with disputes in Nigeria. The Commandant General, Mr. Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, charged officers and men to be more proactive in peace building, conflict prevention and resolution.
He said in Lagos that they should build on capacity in disputes alternative resolutions “to prevent conflicts from escalating especially in remote areas of Nigeria.” He told the personnel to build on “the good work the organization has been doing which has earned the agency encomiums from the United Nations Organization (UNO).
“The corps personnel and the police were assigned to provide security and ensure peace while the military carry on with the battle of tackling the total eradication of the act of terrorism.”
Muhammadu explained that the corps established a forensic unit with modern facilities to boost its performance in the protection of critical infrastructure and national assets: “The corps has a basic training and re-training programme for forensic desk officers for fundamentals of forensics in evidence collection, analysis and litigation support.”
He said the establishment of the forensic unit “is one of our responses to the challenges we sometimes face within the criminal justice system. The facility will continue to provide litigation support for the corps and the country at large.
“The corps needs good record keeping and critical analysis for further investigation and prosecution. The facility is basically to provide professional services that would add value to the corps and the country.
“Crime has assumed a very complex and sophisticate dimension requiring the use of sophisticated gadgets and aids for crime prevention and detection.”
The CG stated that all hands must be on deck in tackling the current security challenges confronting the nation most especially the issue of incessant kidnapping:
“Therefore, the personnel need to be resolute, peaceful, tolerant and accommodative without clashing with personnel of other security agencies.
They should channel their energy towards providing adequate security for the protection of the civil populace and critical infrastructure, which is part of the corps’ core mandate.
He debunked the rumours making the round that certain sum of money was found in his private account since assumption of office in July 2015:
“The budgetary allocation released to the corps has never been up to N7billion. But rumourmongers are concocting stories that N6billion was found in my account, which is fallacious and highly unimaginable.
“This is not possible because government in this era cannot allow such huge amount of money to be paid into a private account when it is meant for an agency. The corps would remain committed to its professional calling.
“The rumour is a smear campaign and should treated as character assassination to rubbish the leadership of the corps for its selfless efforts in transforming the corps better than it met it.
