The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has set aside over N75 million to be paid to 242 officers who died in active service included those who involved in various accidents and retired officers from the service.

Controller-General of the Nigerian Prison Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed, stated this, on Monday, during a workshop in Birnin-Kebbi.

He said said the sum of N33 million has been approved for the payment to the families of the 51 officers of the service who died while on duty.

Ahmed said that another N5 million has been approved as medical allowances for the 36 staff who were involved in various accidents while in active service.

According to him, “In the same vein, the sum of N37 million has been paid to 155 officers who had retired from the service bringing the total payment to N75 million so far.”

In his remark, the Desk officer Prisons Welfare Insurance Scheme, A. D Mamman, said the scheme was designed to carter for the welfare of the officers.

“For the first time in the history of the prisons service today we have 300 operational vehicles, 22 tractors and a functional welfare scheme,” he said.
