The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday inaugurated its manifesto and constitution committees in Abuja. It also raised INEC-Legal and Constitutional Compliance Committee. Chief James Ocholi is the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, while Chief Audu Ogbeh will lead the team to give the APC its manifesto.
The committees are to submit their reports in two weeks. Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) merger committee, Chief Tom Ikimi, who unveiled the committees, noted that part of the coalition’s intention was to create strong party organs and safeguards that would ensure party supremacy while reflecting democratic ideals.
Ikimi said that APC’s target was to design a manifesto that was unique from the existing parties and would inspire ordinary Nigerians. “
Apart from defining clearly the philosophical/ ideological content of APC clearly distinguishing it from the other party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), you are to fully reflect on the social, economic and political situations in the country on the plight of the generality of our people, urban and rural alike, youth and women”.
Ikimi also appealed to the Constitution Committee “ to prepare a robust and defendable constitution that would stand the test of time and serve to deepen the nation’s democracy”. He urged the manifesto committee to identify sustainable revenue sources for the party, design an elaborate membership recruitment system that would ensure a credible membership record nationwide.
Ikimi instructed the manifesto committee to give special attention to education, eradication of corruption, uninterrupted power supply, full and gainful employment, affordable local fuel price, health care, mass housing and agriculture.
The INEC-Legal and Constitutional Compliance Committee will examine all legal issues relating to the process of merger of political parties and provide guidelines on how parties in the merger talks can ensure full compliance with all relevant laws. The committee would liaise with INEC and all other relevant agencies to ensure a smooth consummation of the merger.
