Planned Imo LG polls: Ploy to install surrogates –Opposition, stakeholders

Opposition parties and other stakeholders in Imo State have raised the alarm following plans by the state government to conduct fresh council polls in all the 27 local councils, next year. They described it as a ploy to install its political surrogates ahead of the gubernatorial election in 2015.

This is even as the state government is still locked in a legal battle with the disengaged council chairmen over the issue of tenure.  The Chairman of Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Mr. Terry Akwara disclosed that the Commission has already commenced ward delineation and verification to ensure that elections were held in all the wards across the state.

The ISIEC boss who denied being a member of the ruling party, said that his duty was to conduct credible council polls next year. “I am going to organize a free and fair council elections and I have advised the parties to go and prepare and to do their homework well. I was a victim in 2010, I know what it is like and so I have resolved to create a level-playing field for everybody”. He added that, “We are an unbiased umpire; we are not going to interfere with the issues in Court.

We have started preparations for the council elections and have commenced with ward delineation and verification to ensure that those wards where elections were not held in the last election will be corrected and also to create new wards. We have also applied for the voters register from the INEC, and when we are through with all that we will then release a date for the polls”.

The ISIEC Chairman further hinted that the Commission has concluded plans with the Imo State College of Advanced Professional Studies to organize an eight-week workshop on administration and legislation for all aspirants in the coming election to ensure that those who emerge as Chairmen and Councilors after the election were well equipped for the task ahead.

However, the Secretary of the Imo State Chapter of All Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Enyinna Onuegbu, said that any plan by the state government to hold council elections now would not only be fraudulent but amounts to contempt of Court. The ALGON scribe pointed out that the tenure of the chairmen would constitutionally end in 2013, adding,

“We were elected for a three-year-tenure that will end in August 2013 before we were illegally dissolved by the state government and we are in court to seek redress and until all the matters are resolved, there cannot be council elections in Imo State.” He further stated: “We are aware that the ISIEC is fraudulently collecting as much as N250, 000.00 from each community to create new wards which is simply to hoodwink unsuspecting autonomous communities, as the commission does not have the powers to do so.”

Similarly, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in a state wide broadcast, yesterday described the purported  ongoing ward delineation and verification  as fraudulent and an exercise in futility with the intension to extort money from unsuspecting Imo citizens.

The statement which was signed by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Blyden Amajirionwu, noted that the purported creation of new electoral wards by ISIEC was a ploy to defraud communities in the state. “We advise all autonomous communities to disregard the ongoing exercise by ISIEC.”

Imolites must begin to fast and pray that never again will PDP take over the government of the state at any level. If you watch their desperation since the emergence of Okorocha, you will realise that they PDP are devastated and are probably owing huge sums of money hoping that one day they will regain their seats and plunder the state in other to settle their debts at the expense of imolites. Owerri is emerging as a world state capital. What Lagos is to the South West, Kano to the North and Port Harcourt to the South-South that is what Owerri will soon be to the South East. No amount of PDP conspiracy will derail the vision of Rochas.

We need several wards in Ohaji for Christ sake, they people has been yawning for the dividend of democracy for so long, what we need right now is our own LGA and not to be merge with any one, what we need is a local govt. called OHAJI LGA.

  21. Ed October 31, 2012 at 1:58 pm

PDP is the worse thing to ever happen to Imo state,Ohakim looted and installed ritualist and fraudulent people as chairmen and body could talk then,we are wiser now and happy with whatever our Governor is doing,in him we trust.

Time will tell, and after we check.

  23. Prince Agbugba October 31, 2012 at 3:00 pm

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) was established by Imo State Law No. 14 of 2000 ISIEC as a Constitutional creation derives it existence and powers also from the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria according to the records online and was empowered by law to do the following task:

    a. To organise, undertake and supervise all elections to local government councils within the State.
    b. To render such advice as it may consider necessary to the Independent National Electoral Commission on the compilation of and the register of voters in so far as that register is applicable to local government elections in the State.

My question is, if ISIEC is truly collecting money from communities, which I guess will be illegal, why don’t concern citizens or political parties take them to court. The question of their tenure should be addressed by the court too.

What is wondering me here is the connection of Okorocha and an Independent group…I understands it, when we question his judgment calls on too much projects and limited cash flow, but to accuse him of controlling ISIEC, The Legislative branch and the judiciary branch has the moral equivalent of saying that Okorocha as a personal is more clever than the entire state and its people.

  24. the truth October 31, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Imo PDP is confussed. Remember, Imolites voted for Ohakim under another party before PDP conered him and used him to loot the treasury of the state. We the Imollites are wiser now and can not be fooled again. If PDP like, let them cry out blood, Owelle is GOD sent and we are behind him. Our able governor, carry go

  25. ohakpu October 31, 2012 at 4:24 pm

All PDP members in Oru west are now running to apga to destroy APGA, Mr GOV pls beware of Senator Osita and his native doctor Tom Nwankwo, They will destroy APGA.

  26. Patmanson October 31, 2012 at 4:41 pm

PDP please allow Owelle Rochas to work for Imo room for PDP in Imo statee [owerri]..GOD sent.PDP SHARE THE MONEY. Owelle please continue your good work, carry go, we are behind you.

  27. Eddy Nnanna October 31, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Never again will PDP get near to Imo treasury. The uprooting of PDP in Imo state was an act of God and hearing the mention of the word “PDP” in itself is a curse. These people plundered the state and never at any opportunity shown any remorse for the untold hardship they caused the Imolites while the impostor, ikiri and Achinike held sway for 12 years without any visible and verfiable achievement.
The local government election Ohakim conducted was a mockery to democracy. My obi which is a small hall in my village was a polling booth during the election and about 95 people who voted there all voted against PDP but when I heard over the air waves of the result that PDP scored 100% winning everything, I nearly committed blue murder.
If I ever have my way, the word PDP should be mentioned anywhere in Imo state.
See the promoters of PDP in the state last week shamelessly gave award to the acclaimed “worst governor” south of the east. Yet, it is this same governor that members of the noble profession (NBA) publicly protested the managerial incompetence of the governor in the streets of Aba recently. Go to Enyimba city and judge with your eyes. Enyimba city used to be the pride of any igbo man but go, see & tell what you will see. At times, when you hear these people talk, you begin to wonder if they are just coming from the moon or that we are just compound fools & idiots

  28. Buzor October 31, 2012 at 5:26 pm

Oga Rochas pls let the election be fast so that development can get to the grassroot. As for PDP unless they REPENT, shun corrupt practise & promise to be of good behaveour by useing public fund for development, sickness that will take away that money may befall them. He who has ear let him hear!!!

Ikedi Ohakim and PDP are afraid that what they did in 2010 would also be done by Rochas and APGA. They conducted a sham Local government election election on a saturday, declared all PDP candidates elected and hurriedly swore them in the following monday morning by 7am to beat anybody that may go to court. The evil seed sown by smart PDP and their advisers is now hunting them. If Rochas decides let him do likewise. The future is there to judge us.
