Oyo bulldozers demolish celestial church

The ongoing demolition of structures embarked upon by Oyo State government, as part of its beautification exercise, took another dimension yesterday, as government bulldozers demolished Celestial Church of Christ, Onala Parish along Mokola-Sango Road, Ibadan.

The demolition of the church was done against an earlier court injunction. The bulldozers and government officials’ government that accompanied it had arrived the church premises around 10a.m while defying all entreaties by the Shepherd in charge, Evangelist Kolawole Olakanmi and other senior members of the Church.

Olakanmi, who, alongside nine other members of the Church, were later arrested and taken to the Secretariat Police Station, while speaking to newsmen said: “I showed them the copy of the court injunction, but their leader told me that the order was from the governor. “He even told me that the order of the governor supercedes any court injunction and in the process, I was ordered to be taken into their vehicle, locked up before my other members were arrested and brought here without any charge.”

  2. umazi December 1, 2012 at 3:54 am

What do u expect from a muslem Governor.Wickedness and fanaticism are their watchword.

  3. Sani dasham December 1, 2012 at 4:24 am

Churches and mosques doesn’t pay tax to the goverenment, but they collect tithes from their fellowers, please allow government to beautify our cities for us and not churshes or mosques where the imams/pastors cannot even preaches peace to its followeres, only to instigate religion riot here and there.

  4. olusola oyeniyi December 1, 2012 at 4:27 am

Leave the BOKOHARAM Governor alone as He is smoking the first and the last cigarette. No governor have survived it twice in Oyo state and Ajimobi will not be a sacred cow or an exception .But whether the Governor and his accomplices like it or not Jesus had won the Crown of Glory and liveth .BI GBOGBO AYE DI,TE MO WA ,WON GBODO TE,RIBA FUN OLUWA ,EYIN OMO IJO MIMO E DIDE KI EYIN OLUWA .I will implore all celestial members to leave the Governor and allow Him to carry out what ever as no body ever battle the Lord and win .Every thing will be history ,well done Mr Governor ,and more Greece to your elbow .

  5. Dele Odugbemi December 1, 2012 at 5:08 am

@Umuazi and Olusola, you guys did not mean with your comments above, would the Governor leave the Church alone to disturb the ongoing beautification of the ancient city of Ibadan when all other buildings and properties along the same road have been demolished? We should be objective in our contributions and leave po9litics and sentiments out of it, i could remember what Ribadu said about Ibadan during his visit there when the Fuji man Governor Alao Akala was in power, so we all should encourage the present Governor in his efforts to make the largest City in West Africa regains its lost glory. Nigeria’s way of practicing religion is not more than commercial ventures that benefit the Pastors and few members of the Inner circle in the churches and Imams and top members of Islamic organizations and Mosques. The affected Church should relocate to another place that would not contravene the town planing laws of Ibadan municipality.

  6. okey onuoha December 1, 2012 at 5:34 am

Cele people are known for building their churches by water ways in order to have access to water for barthing their women. If this one is blocking the free flow of water the Governor has right to remove it.
Ajimobi should make his impact, good or bad, since he has only one term to rule Oyo State.

  7. Killimanjaro/London December 1, 2012 at 5:57 am

This is the manifestoes of the ISLAMIC PARTY called ACN. Waging war against xtians. Bear in mind all their Governors except one are Muslims and Boko-haram members including its national leader.

  8. Kenny December 1, 2012 at 6:17 am

No wonder we are backward at this jet speed rate! Instead of asking the legality behind the structure we are castigating governor simply because he is a Muslim. I am that similar reactions would emerge if it is other way round too. Calling a governor who is households are Christians Boko Haram is nothing but cowardness. Ask him why he demolished the church, as we know that most CCC churches were built on water pathway, as long as they are built for Christ nothing wrong in that

  9. Merit December 1, 2012 at 6:31 am

In Kano here, Govt demolishes roadside mosques in order to beautify and rehabilitate the roads, why the cry in Oyo State, even if mosques are affected, they shld be demolished but govt. must avoid sentiments..

  10. Evang Chijioke December 1, 2012 at 6:45 am

Gov please give them money to buld back the church it is the houe of God .

    • Kenny December 1, 2012 at 7:33 am

Are we expecting govt to give money to the church which was illegally built, legalizing illegality. Are we moving forward or backward?

Well to me,Nigeria has belittle our judiciary system.its a shame to our all over the world, judges are considered mini gods.why is it that the judge gave injuction and the government refused to obey.I sorry for nigeria. How can the judge be belittled in this manner.Nigeria wake up

    • Odogwu December 1, 2012 at 9:52 am

You are the only person that has spoken. It is a serious illegality to disobey a court order, no matter how foolish the order might appear. It is worse than building on the waterway.

  14. Adstones December 1, 2012 at 10:22 am

D problem in ds country is corruption. Town planning laws r nt obeyed nd tins dont work well. If d buildings r built on illegal places d govt hz d right to demolish dem nt minding whose ox is gored. D judiciary is also corrupt. If d building is illegal y giving injunction. Let d governor do hs work wtout looking back. Let him nt fail d pple. Posterity ll judge.

  15. Oloto ilu December 1, 2012 at 10:51 am

Oyo State Governor has every right to demolish illegal structure that obstructs development. However,he should have respected the court order to show that he believes in the rule of law as two wrongs cannot make a right. So, he is guilty and must repent by paying for the construction of the church and the land in another location. The law must be obeyed and respected.

  16. Stine Chykee December 1, 2012 at 11:51 am

Yoruba people wat did you expect wen you adopt ACN as your party, more suprises will come from ACN national chairman Tinubu and those ACN muslims governors

  17. kola amodu December 1, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Stine chykee, god of thunder will wallop ur stupid mouth for abusing Tinubu n de ACN. Do u want us to be like ur ugbo people who does not have coerrent vision. Just anything go. Look arround ur igbo land what works there? Nothing. Shall will talk about dirtyness of Abia state(Aba) or de evromental disaster of Coal city, pls don’t let me talk abput ebonyi state backwardness. Whether u people like it or not south west region will continue to show de rest of de nation de way forward. So “Omo yamirin” bewear. God bless south west nigeria. Amen.

  18. Toks December 1, 2012 at 5:35 pm

This is incompetence of the highest order. I do not condole any church breaking the law, but at the same time the state, through the town planning authority, one would expect to be competent,Law abiding, enlightened and intelligent enough to fasten the court injunction and see it through(through accelerated hearing in the court of law)

They could have invoked the power of compulsory purchase if the church has got the right papers and authorisation to build ,get an independent valuer, compensate them, give them about a month notice and that’s it. As against behaving like thugs and agbero.I wonder who their director is,surely a political appointee and most likely an illiterate or half baked rubbish.

Please note that my comment was not because it was a church,i don’t believe in Nigerian churches.

  19. Gee December 1, 2012 at 6:05 pm

What transpired was travesty of justice, the Court’s order supercedes the governor’s. This is show of power which only happened in Nigeria where the rule of law is not obeyed making mockery of the Justice system. The governor needs the court to carry out demoniltion is not the governors perrogative to inject into matters already been handled by local authority.

  20. Sun December 1, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Anybody who is tribalistic must be a very crude person, just like cola. To educate cola, there is no state in the south west that is as beautiful as the easthern states.

  21. Iba O December 1, 2012 at 9:00 pm

It is unfortunate that action taken in good faith by a Governor performing the duty we elected him to perform is being discussed here with religion sentiment. I personally saw the demolished church opposite Premier Hotel. The Church was right inside Government Land which was reserved for development up to Cultural Center and Secretariat. Let the church show the public the agreement of purchase or allocation from government or C of O. Lawlessness in the name of religion. The owners of that church are to be charged to court to put a stop to this lawlessness. I hope matured mind are to be discussing in this forum. Gov Ajimobi should not listen to the voice of law breaker. Court injunction obtained on illegality cannot stop a Legal action. One who goes to equity must go with clean hand. The violators of Town Planning Law in Ibadan should be charge to court immediately. this will deter others pls.

  22. ben kurudu December 1, 2012 at 9:08 pm

the Gov should hurry and apologise to the Church and setle the church quickly .becouse he the governor violated both the constitution of Nigeria and the spiritual Law . i plead with the Governor not to distroy the desting of his children in the name serving Government .let nobody mislead you that becouse you are Governor you can handle spiritual things carelessly .please do what is ok and on time

  23. Iba O December 1, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Stine Chykee, or what did you call yourself. as tribalistic as you are, what has Yoruba done to warrant insult from your type. Igbo race should be grateful that they are being accommodated even when Pa Awo did his Free Education, he never exclude Igbo in all his programme, you can only pay Yoruba with evil for doing good. Let it be at the back of your mind that there is no beginning without an end. All this insult against Yoruba will end one day. Remember, Gov Tinubu made an Ibo boy Gov in Lagos. Igbo was allowed to be Chairman in Lagos. Mention any state in Igbo land where such is happening. You go to another person land make wealth live and died there uninterrupted, still you abuse your host. Remember Law of Cama. You are sowing seed of discord, and you shall reap it. What Gov Ajimobi is doing now has nothing to do with Igbo, rather it purely Oyo State matter. Church should learn to respect the law and not usurp public property and hide under church. There are other mush room church temporarily in the reserve land when climbing hill opposite Cultural Center, they should be evicted before they resort to permanent structure like the CCC just demolished. Oyo State Government should impose fine on the Church for the period they have being using government land illegally. rushing to court to obtain an injunction is not the right way rather it illegality built on illegality.

Abia state (Aba) to mention but a few is one of the most beautiful state.

  27. Ify boy December 1, 2012 at 10:33 pm

It is only a myopic destitute, a religious bigot cum fanatic, and one whose power of reasoning is too weak and shallow who belive that every thing about religion should be swallowed hook line and sinker, as for the court injunction the thing has become too cheap am afraid very soon onitsha/aba traders will be selling the paper.

  28. EKASON December 1, 2012 at 10:42 pm
