A new song for Rochas, Ohakim

By Ugochukwu Favour-Mayor

The system of politics in Imo today seems to be changing, following recent happenings in the state. People are beginning to assess the immediate past administration of ex-governor Ikedi Ohakim and that of his successor, Governor Anayo Rochas Okorocha. From the recent reactions from the people, it seems to be that history is vindicating Ohakim.

And such reaction from different zones of the state is making me to ask about the kind of politics and government we are experiencing in Imo. I would like to counter emphasis from the recent national problem that Nigeria in a whole is experiencing, the flood issue. For example, Imo state is never an exception, as we already know that the Federal government has released the sum of N400 million to flood victims.

And that has made me to ask how a reasonable person could set up a committee to receive the said amount of money for Federal Government’s intervention fund to assist flood disaster victims in Imo State, while the victims are distressed? Even at that, it is now perceived that the money might lead to political crisis in the state as some top politicians and stakeholders are already kicking against the committee set up by the state government to disburse the funds and relief materials to the affected communities.

Also, it was learnt that the relief materials donated by Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and those donated by Imo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (ISOPADEC) were allegedly shared based on party affiliations. What party affiliation? However, it was based on this premise that some people faulted the composition of the state government’s committee set up to oversee the distribution of the materials and funds to the flood victims.

They observed with dismay that the committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, has proved incompetent in managing the post-disaster crisis, alleging that the relief materials brought for the victims by the NDDC was shared to party loyalists instead of the victims. What a world? Should we not be rescuing Imolites from the rescuer? Now, the victims of the flood disaster in the two council areas of Ohaji-Egbema and Oguta are yet to be provided a camp by the state government and are still exposed to health and security risks in a state governed by a rescuer!

Meanwhile, without counting losses over the outcome of the 2011 general election, Ohakim still went further to visit the affected communities where he donated food items and cows to the communities. He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and his running mate during the 2011 general election, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, and by a number of top politicians in the state including the former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Goodluck Opiah, State Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sir George Eguh, the member representing Oguta State Constituency, Hon. Eugene Dibiagwu, the former commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Kelechi Okpaleke and Ohakim’s personal friend and brand consultant, Prof. Chinedu Asinu-Anosike of Cona Anosike Support Foundation Incorporated.

However, Ohakim assured the people that he would do everything within his power to ensure that they were given what was due to them. According to him, “I want to assure all of you that I would do everything within my power to ensure that whatever has been given to you must come to you because you are my people and you have always listened to me”, he said. Also Prof. Onwuliri assured the people that the Federal Government would never abandon any of the victims affected by the flood disaster.

Ex-Governor Ikedi Ohakim was accused of every bad thing on earth: He pocketed N100 billion bond money; pocketed N8 billion meant for the dredging of Nworie River; personally assaulted a Catholic priest; did not create 10,000 jobs, that the ring roads and flyover bridges were NDDC projects, not his, and that there was no Wonder Lake project, etc. Today, the people know better. Those who deliberately leveled those accusations against the former governor are the ones now asking themselves whether they were actually guided by their conscience. I see nothing that could be said Ohakim did against the people, what you hear is: “Ohakim worked but he is arrogant.”

Don’t you think that in Nigeria today when someone is courageous to approach issues it will then be noted as being arrogant? I still ask, has the song not changed for Ohakim, whereby making history to vindicate him? Ex-governor Ikedi Ohakim till this moment is a big issue, even in his absence as the governor of the state. While as the governor, everything that happened in Imo state was all leveled on him. Even when some men’s inability to have their wives conceived, blames will be thrown on Ohakim.

The commercial aspect of it is even more interesting. For example, about eighteen to twenty two Owerri-based newspapers would go to town without a front page story with banner headline on Ikedi Ohakim. Beyond Owerri, some newspaper columnists would not write without a mention of Ikedi Ohakim even if the topic were to be outside politics. But today, the song has changed. You need to see how the people laid complaints on how the present government in Imo turned its back on them.

Why? Because they voted against the wish of Okorocha in the last election that brought Hon. Eugene Dibiagwu, as their representative at the State House of Assembly. And that’s exactly the rejection the people of Mbaise are getting from the present government in Imo. It is quite unfortunate that the people at their last Iri Ji festival described his act as an unforgivable spirit, following his shun to their annual festival. And if I may ask, if Oguta and Mbaise are turned back at by the government, has the entire Imo not been turned down? A new song indeed! Ex-governor Ikedi Ohakim is a man I see as being so multi-faceted; it is practically impossible for me to even capture his essence in such a limited space.

Being multi-faceted, he can simply be distinguished as an achiever who helped to re-chart the developmental course of Imo State, re-directing it to success, and raising the standard of governance and public accountability in Imo State and Nigeria at large. But within a short period of time, the people who sent for the killing and crucifying of Ohakim forgot his intimidating profile, background and humble beginning. Ohakim is a man who not only shunned godfatherism, but described them as analogue politicians who are aimed at moving the state backward.   Of course, he has set the pace for Rochas to follow.

A pace he set, waiting for his second tenure vision to be consolidated, but never worked, now Rochas is enjoying it. Yes, he Rochas confirmed it when he openly said at 80th birthday ceremony of the mother of the Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, that: “Ohakim is my predecessor, the footprints Ohakim instituted are what I am following. I cannot have problems with Ohakim. We are brothers and cannot quarrel”. Favour-Mayor writes from Owerri

I am amazed that people should be talking bad about the Governor. Do you expect the governor to personally go about sharing it or did he convert the materials to his personal use. I don’t why these failed politicans would want to rock the boat of the state. How many of them have made a personal donation to these people or even did something for them while they were in power. All they want is to give Rochas a bad name. But they will never succeed for we have had enough of share the money party. LONG LIVE IMO STATE LONG LIVE THE GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA

This write-up is yet to make me change my views about the present Govt. in Imo State.
No Govt. is without criticism. Rochas-led Govt. in Imo State is believably doing great jobs for Imolites, but cannot impress all. But, beware of politicians and their games sometimes, u don’t know their destinations.

This is a paid writer and that is the only reason he is associating his name with Ohakim. It is because of people like this that Ohakim failed – praise singing.
Aside his arrogance, Ohakim never left any good legacy that the whole people of Imo State will remember him after his demise. On the other hand, Rochas legacy will remain ever green in the annals of Imo history – for a good cause.

Dear Bro & Sis of Imo State, the truth is that Ohakim is waking up. its when u are out of power that you will begin to see the things we would have done. Thank God he is repenting fo good, we love him, even the prodigal son came back and was accepted. He kept enough Imo fund in his house let him use it well now and show his repentance by still giving it back to the owners. The poor masses of Imo are waiting for of his kind gesture geared towards buying his way back to the minds of the Imo citizens

Imolites and even foreigners can see the difference in IMO STATE. At least I can speak for my Senatorial district. for the first time since I was born, we now have Tarred road passing thru my village (Obodoukwu). This same road was awarded and “SUPPOSEDLY COMMISSIONED” by Ohakim. While we were still waiting for the Bulldozers to start working, we heard that the Project was completed and commissioned. In the actual fact, about A-quarter of the road was done and a Big Advert board of the “ACTION GOVERNOR” (Ohakim) on the supposedly completed road was mounted at one end of the road at Obiohia junction to deceive people. I am talking of the Road that cuts from Obiohia (Umuchuma) thru Urualla, Obodoukwu, Isiokpo, Akokwa to Uga.

We are grateful to God for what we are now seeing in Imo state.

Whether you are “Favour or Mayor” as you claimed here,we cant confirm your true identity, but am sure you are a political jobber and boothlicker looking for a cheap way of surviving. You are crying wolf where there is none, because your assertion that your Ohakim is being vindicated is a fluke made to confuse the people, but we that live in Imo know better. Therefore, all your praises for Ohakim are nothing but vain glorious praises that signifies nothing, because even the money you said he donated was stolen from the same Imo people unjustly,so hide your face in shame and allow this governor to do his bit.

Ohakim’s era is gone, period. Why can’t we look forward to what Rochas has for Imo state instead of revisiting Ohakim’s reign?

Meanwhile, Rochas needs to be told: there should be no going back in the state government’s decision to locate the state university in Ideato. At best, it can locate a mini campus of the university at Mbaise or on its present site in Owerri, from where a new full-fledged university can easily rise at any time. The engineering faculty is also meant for Okigwe.

Major or Favour, whatever you call yourself, truth cannot hide and no matter how long, it will always hunt those who try to cover it up. Look at the reaction trailing your write up. 99% of the reaction is against you. Am sure all of us reacting to your write up do not know you personally, and therefore would not have had any axe to grind with you. But if you say the truth, trust that reaction from your readers will support you. I beleive you are Ohakim praise singer, but all the same, you are praise singing him too late in the day. Where have you been all these while?? You should have done all these while Ohakim was in power, why now?? My advise is that you should go and think of something else to do rather than trying to resuscitate a dead man which is impossible. Rochas is working, don’t judge him yet, not even with distribution of relief material. He can’t be everywhere, even though no one supports marginalization in the distribution. Make your complaints about the distribution separately, but don’t use same to compare Rochas with Ohakim. Your write up is a shame & act of sacrilege. You goofed. Stop hiding under the Internet darkness to make this smelly comments, come out in the open and repeat it, then we will respond to you squarely. The elephant cannot hide in a grass.

Like an ostrich, Ohakim for 4 years buried his head in the sands of the state capital doing a few development works as well as doing ‘clean and green’ in a state capital where there was hardly portable water. Development in a state for Ohakim was only meant for the state capital. Now with Rochas, except for building a few roads outside the state capital, Okorocha seems to be like Ohakim: both men seem to believe that any development project that is worthy of praise must be in the state capital. Let the Imolites be the judge not the few who benefited from the small thief (Ohakim) govt. when the peoples’ governor is in a wrong direction. Am so surprised reading this stuff on All Saints day when am fully aware that the main beneficiary of the article, Ikedi “Ikiri” Ohakim is nothing near a saint. Two things are very outstanding in this issue at hand; either our paid writer with that funny pseudonym (419 name) have a deep problem of Amnesia or that, he has been paid handsomely to brush up his Boss and dress him up in a different garb with such a bright saintly halo to the greatest surprise of the Angels in heaven all in preparation for next guber. election. You can deceive some people some time but you cannot fool all of at the same time. If your master Ikiri is that holy I suggest he begins with Restitution. Just giving a mere pittance out of the massive loot of Imo Treasury is not enough to erase his sins.
For the records, an honest writer always go with his genuine name, so next time if you truly believe in the authenticity of your article put your name to it. A fictitious name makes a good fictitious writing. ~OFONAKARA

Setting a pace for Owelle Rochas to follow indeed!! What pace did Ohakim set? Those things that was said about Ohakim before he lost election was not even said by Rochas. Infact, Ohakim performed woefully and thats the reason Imolites voted him out of office so all this gestures he is doing now is simply face saving. Yes the people of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta voted for PDP based on Arthur Nzeribe’s instructions beacuse he is their godfather till today. There is no doubt in my mind that Ohakim wants to stage a comeback but he will never ever succeed in his game plan. He is very wicked. When he was in office what did he do about the erosion in Ideato? I am very happy with most commentators in this useless report by Favour Mayor who i know was sponsored by PDP and Ohakim but their evil plan will never work. Ohakim’s own has finished and his political career in Imo state ended on 6th May 2011. Where is the Oguta Wonder Lake? Let them come and contest LGC election next year and lets see how they would fare. No amount of face saving measure will bring Ohahim back to Douglass House,Owerri. Why should Mbaise people be angry because Rochas didnt attend their Iri Ji festival? Are they the only people that know how do perform Iri Ji festival? That festival is too trivial to be associated with Rochas for he has so many state matters to attend to.

Ohakim might be arrogant but he is administratively and intelligently endowed to be a good leader. I just realised that Ohakim was actually putting imo state on the path of development before we all cut him short. I am of the view that owelle is not so endowed to politically propel us to the highest level of development which this state anticipates. In the next election i would not make hasty decisions when i dnt have my facts right. D heros square, Concord hotel extension, comissioners quaters, house members quaters, put light in general hospital(ohakim neva did in 4yrs), building of standard class room blocks all over the state, restructuring of the city, opening of city roads to reduce traffic etc. What we need is development not iriije visits. Ugochukw favor or whatever u call urself,u are nothing but a hungry idiot,is either that you are blind or that u are dead, bcs it’s a person who is in either of the two condition that will want to compare Owelle rochas with the devil called ohakim,it’s like comparing light with darkness, good with evil.the good lord that we all serve will continue to bless, guide and direct rochas so that he will continue the good work that he’s doing in IMO state.mind you am from anambra state,bu rochas is the new Sam mbaukwu of the blessed memory.

This writer has made some salient points which Rochas Okorocha needs to seriously consider if he desires to retain the huge trust and confidence Imo people invested on him. However, this writer is an Ohakim apologist, and is most clearly a paid PDP praise singer who is out to sing Ohakim’s praises. Ohakim is a goods nobody in Imo State who want to have, even if it is free. Going to donate relief materials to flood victims is a good thing he has done. He should return more of the stolen funds he siphoned from the treasury of Imo State.

The criticism should have been directed to the said commitee, period . If all the bad gover we have had in imo state should be like Rochas, then Imolites would be like Europeans.I prefer to wait for 4yrs b4 passing judgement.

we, the IMOLITES now understand better. we were charmed and deceived. 2015 is decisive for every reasonable IMOLITEs. we will not be deceived again with this manthra, free, but not qualitative education.untill i see Rochas children attend public school in IMO, of course it is a big Wayo!

  125. Justin November 2, 2012 at 8:03 pm - Reply

Mr. Ohakim’s trumpeter, we IMOLITES know all that Ohakim did in Imo state and Imolites prayed not to have any body that is like OHAKIM again. Every body in Imo state especially people of Okigwe zone are aware that ohakim is warming up for Okigwe senatorial seat come 2015, but the poeple of okigwe will not be stupid to let Ohakim handle any political or leadership position again. It is a shame that, for Ohakim’s four years as Governor, his zone have nothing to show for it, talk of Imo state in general. If Ohakim like, let him share one cow each to imo people, he has failed before and he will continue to fail. Ohakim and his group should let Rochas be and stop working against the man voted by Imo sons and daughters.

Mr.praise signer, you should stop this your reckless write-up and mr Ohkim issue.Ndimo have finished with reckless years of Ohakim’s cueless adminstration.
Imo state needs dynamic leader like Okoroch right now

I lived in Owerri during Ohakim tenure and it was all deceit and hype. Rochas is now the governor and there is a visible difference. Why not lie low Mr. Ohakim before Imo people start to remember your times and probably engage the EFCC to quiz you? It is unlikely that you will smell political power again in Imo state and indeed Nigeria judging by your utterances and performance.

When did this Mayor Ugochukwu visit Imo last? Why would he even compare a thief( Ohakim) with a God sent Moses of Imo( Rochas)? In Ohakim, free education is not possible in Imo. In Rochas, free education from Nursery 2 tertiary levels, including free skul uniform, free skul bags, free skul books, free skul sandals. In Ohakim roads are completed only on internet, billboards and pages of newspapers. In Rochas, streets are tarred, new roads built, ringroads opened. In Ohakim Imsu skul fee N120000. In Rochas it is free of charge for indigenes. In Ohakim projects remain uncompleted. In Rochas, Here’s square, lawmakers quarters, concord, classroom blocks of international standard completed. To mentioned but a few. Remember, Ohakim completed 4yrs. Rochas is just a year and half in govt. Why can’t people appreciate good for once in their lives. Anyone who says good thing is not good, God do not allow anything good to come to that person in Jesus name i pray….

My governor, the purpose of Ugochukwu’s writing is not only to enlighten and inform you on the happenings in the state, but hopefully to stimulate you to action. Any leader who does not accept constructive criticism will have a hard time reaching his full potential. My governor, if you must get it right, you should not shiver nor quiver over communicating piece.

I am happy that people are beginning to express their opinion. I hope the people concerned are reading all these or atleast their advisers. it is my believe that the present governor will harness all these opinions to redouble effort for the benefit of good people of Imo state who voted him into power. finally, I believe Owelle is exposed and has some of the chiociest properties in Abuja, he should strive to replicate the roads he enjoys their in Imo state. I’m worried with the state of some of the roads under construction in our beloved state.

I’m happy that people are freely expressing their opinions. More happy to learn that the Governor and his advisers read these comments. However, Owelle should redouble effort to carry along all Imolites irrespedtive of their views. lastly, Owerri should pay attention to the quality of roads being constructed under his administration.

    Sorrry Owelle not Owerri.
