Ogun traditional rulers exchange blows

From MOSHOOD ADEBAYO, Abeokuta

The Nigeria Police Division in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State was turned into a boxing arena on Tuesday when two traditional rulers engaged each other in fisticuffs over disagreement on a cultural festival.

The two traditional rulers involved in what many have described as desecration of the Yoruba culture and tradition were Olu of Itori, Oba Akorede Akamo and Baale Lapeleke, Chief Adisa Akinremi. Daily Sun reliably gathered that Akinremi had gone to the police station to lodge complaints against Oba Akamo and the police invited the latter to defend himself. Akinremi was said to have complained about the alleged disruption of a cultural ceremony being staged by natives of a neighbouring village the night previous.

Daily Sun learnt that it was while Akamo was trying to defend himself that he got angry and allegedly slapped Akinremi, who retaliated as well as went ahead to beat the attacker up to the extent that he (Akamo) scampered for safety. The Owu people in Lapeleke camp township, a suburb town of Itori in the local government area were at the height of celebrating the annual Owu Cultural and Heritage Renaissance Festival.

The Owu festival had earlier been flagged off at the palace of the Olowu of Owu in Abeokuta on Monday. Akamo was alleged to have led a group of people believed to be thugs, armed with guns and cutlasses and shot sporadically leading to the disruption of the ceremony. Several people were injured in the melee and property yet to be estimated were destroyed. While the injured had been taken to a hospital in Abeokuta for treatment, Daily Sun also learnt that a number of arrests had been made and the suspects were being questioned at the Itori Police Station.

The two traditional rulers were also said to have made statements to the police, while the matter had been transferred to the state police headquarters for further investigations. Although the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached for comments, a senior police officer in the command who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident.

“The matter has been transferred here and the two traditional rulers have made useful statements to the police. The issue of gun totting by anyone, whether the person had licence to use it or not, is a serious allegation which we are also investigating.”

That is yoruba for you. What a shame, ofcourse that is not in their dictionary, as they (yorubas) fights naked publicly.

Gone are the days when traditional rulers are held in high esteem and seen as fathers of all. They were the last port of call in any dispute and lived by examples.
Nowadays, all communities go in search of rulers without recourse to tradition and end up appointing the man who can offer bribe and bully his way to the sacred throne of his ancestors. These ‘rulers’ end up desecrating the revered office and tradition of the people. We are seeing the result in Abeokuta where traditional rulers exchange blows at a police station!!!
It seems we are descending lower and lower in all aspects of life in Nigeria.

The problem is more than that Mr Sholeye. It is a manifestation of the disunity in Egbaland which was caused when the then Alake in the 1930s was not able to move the other 3 powerful local Obas to their homesteads so that Abeokuta could have peace. These Obas like the Olowu of Owu and Osile of Oke Ona create so much problem for the Alake of Egbaland. Itori is a town under the Alake and has an Oba; Olu of Itori but the Lapeleke a village is occupied by Owu people and the Olowu installed a baale to contest the supremacy of Olu of Itori and Alake of Egbaland. That is the real problem.
No Egba Homestead is greater than the other. Our forefathers decided to come together because of unity and make the Alake the supreme head so that we can have one voice. Let this two Obas that I respect please tow the line of our forefathers for peace in Egbaland and also let the Alake present himself as a father in this democratic Nation of ours and there shall be peace in Egbaland. The solution lies with Alake calling on the Olowu and settling this rift before Osile takes advantage of it. We need peace in Egbaland. I love our Obas but only unity can make us strong.

It is shameful acts for traditional rulers to engage themselves in such street fighting. The crowned King of Itori is superior to the Baale of Lapeleke, hence, Oba Akamo of Itori should not have descended so low to lead thugs to disrupt the cultural festival of Lapeleke people which led to the complaints lodged by Baale of Lapeleke at Itori Police station. Oba Akamo of Itori has performed acts that called for his dethronement by Ogun state government if he has actually engaged in street fighting with Baale of Lapeleke and Alake of Egbaland who is also the paramount ruler of Egbaland will definitely support the deposition of Oba Akamo of Itori if he is found to be truly engaged in such scuffle with the Baale.

Another shameful scene part 2 by the so called traditional rulers. Deji of Akure created the first one and the movie sold N1,000,000 copies per day. Her sister state Ogun wants to archive higher target @ 10,000,000 Naira copies per day. Watch out the part 3 side of it is to throw heavy juju against each other, one failing after the other, useless institution.

In time past, those that ascend the traditional royal stool are usually people of trusted pedigree, impeccable character & excellent disposition, however, this days ‘the throne’ has been eroded & polluted by politics&corruption like every other facet of our national life, all that we see now are “Area fathers” & political psycophants who have nothing to offer but to further plunder the lean resourse of their people at local govt. Level…,its such a shame
