Nigeria at 52: I can’t do it alone –Jonathan

•..Flags off one year prayer project

From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja

The President yesterday solicited the co-operation of all Nigerians in moving the country forward. He spoke in Abuja during an interdenominational church service to mark Nigeria’s 52nd Independence anniversary, which comes up today. Quoting from 2 Corinthians 10:4, President Goodluck Jonathan said he alone could not solve Nigeria’s problems. The service had the theme: The weapons of our warfare are not carnal.

This is even as he expressed confidence that there are many Nehemiahs in the National Assembly, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) judiciary, educational and private sectors that would rebuild the nation just like God used Prophet Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

While appreciating Christians, some religious leaders, especially those praying in the remote areas for his government to succeed because they know if it succeeds, their children will succeed, Jonathan assured that no matter the challenges facing the country, they were temporary and Nigeria shall overcome. The President noted for the umpteenth time that his administration had sanitised the electoral process, adding that corruption would soon be a thing of the past.

“On corruption, Transparency International that has never spared Nigeria admitted in its latest rating that Nigeria is second to America in the commitment to the fight of corruption. God willing, we shall overcome it. “On the economic environment, at least, 249 new companies, according to the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, have entered the market. We shall continue to work hard to create jobs for our people.

“I want to assure Nigerians we will not sleep until we stabilise power in this country. “Leadership at all levels is collective. One, person cannot change a nation. Agreed, the leader matters but he cannot change things alone. All of us Nigerians must work together to rebuild our nation. Our men and women will change things in this country.

There are so many Nehemiahs in the National Assembly, the Federal Executive Council, our judiciary; our teachers, businessmen and women and I believe God will use these Nehemiahs to rebuild the country. “I can say again that Nigeria will succeed. With your cooperation, we shall succeed,” he said. President Jonathan later flagged off the one-year prayer project.” He said prayers helped the United States in determining the direction of America and can do same for Nigeria.

Also, Pastor Ayo Ortisejafor, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), described Boko Haram as a terrorist organisation being funded by those who want to create political space for themselves and those who want to see Nigeria divided. Ortisejafor described as wickedness that Nigeria, according to the Centre for Management Development (CMD) spends N1.6 trillion on generators annually, while “a good number of Nigerians only see electricity cables without having light. Beautiful homes dot the landscape of our major cities while many Nigerians don’t have a place to lay their heads.

For people to be surrounded by so much water and yet not have clean pipe – born water to drink. For men to make incarnations and satanic pronouncements over the nation in shrines and strange altars, all because some of them desire positions at all cost. For people to continue to play politics of religion and ethnicity, while a group of men continue to swell the numbers of widows and orphans on a daily basis.” In his message titled: “God still answers prayers”, and taken from 2 Chronicles 7:14, Pastor Ortisejafor said the question that had bothered him for so long is:

“Does God hear our prayers or has he abandoned us? According to him, “we cannot judge God’s ability to perform on what we see but what we know about God. “On the scripture we read, God expects the church to fast and pray for Nigeria but so our church does not become a ritual, He gives two very important conditions before God can answer prayer. “One, God says we must humble ourselves.

He said he will not forget the cries of the humble. He resists the proud and gives grace to humble. “God hates pride and pride can hinder prayers. If we are genuinely serious about getting answers to national prayers, we must deal with the issues of pride. “The fact that I’m President of CAN does not make me God. “Many of our politicians today especially those elected, are so disconnected from the people and it can be put down to one thing, pride! “When you are disconnected from the people, you become the master and they, your servants. “Pride can hinder prayers and humility brings God’s hand on the people.

“The second condition for answered prayer is, we must turn from our wicked ways. The word of God says shall we continue in sin that grace may abound. “Boko Haram is a terrorist organisation. The activities of Boko Haram are not fuelled by poverty but by a religious fundamentalist ideology. Boko Haram is being funded from within by people who desire to use them to create political space for themselves and funded from without by those who want to see Nigeria divided along religious-ethnic lines. Boko Haram is also sustained by media apologist who feed the unsuspecting public with politically incorrect half-truths.

As a nation, as a people, if we are serious about getting answers to our national prayers, we must as a matter of urgency, turn from our wicked ways. Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end. “We can have a Nigeria we desire, where no one is oppressed, not judge by religion or tribe but by their content. We can have the Nigeria that we desire”. Also quoting from 1 Kings 18:41, Ortisejafor said: “I speak as a prophet of this nation. It is true that I cannot see the rain but I hear the sound of abundance of rain. The rain of joy, peace, love, security, unity, prosperity.

“The rain will sweep away evil and division. “We will pray for the nation in the next one year. The prayer points of forgiveness and pray for rain that will unite Nigeria. The rain that will divide the good for the evil. “If we meet those conditions, God will hear from heaven, forgive our sins and heal our land (Nigeria). In his remarks, the convener of Nigeria Prays and former Head of State, Dr. Yakubu Gowon, spoke on the intercessory prayer for Nigeria’s transformation. He said this time calls for sober reflection, greater volume of prayer and supplication.

Gowon said the special independence prayers is the gathering of builders and watchmen of our nation, to seek the face of God for the difficulties facing the country and to set the tone for transformation. He said “together, we can rescue our nation from its present difficulties”. Catholic Pontif, Pope Benedict also sent message praying for peace and hope for Nigeria. Senate President David Mark took the First Bible Reading which was taken from the book of 1 Samuel 17:38-47. While the second scripture 2 Corinthians 10:1-5 was taken by President jonathan.

Prayers were said for the President and leaders of the Nigerian Nation, moral decadence, indiscipline and corruption, poverty, unemployment and natural disaster, insecurity, terrorism, conflicts, unrest and the church. Some of the dignitaries present were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, Senate President David Mark, Deputy Senate President, Deputy Speaker, ministers, Secretary to Government of the Federation, Chief of Staff, Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs, top government functionaries, top politicians and members of diplomatic corps.

So Nigeria is 52 years old with nothing to show for it with respect to leadership except wanton destruction of many innocent lives and properties while the bastards within the corridors of powers are looting our treasury while at the same time telling us they cannot rule the country alone. Mr. President, resign or quit the office if you cannot eliminate corruptions and put an end to the looting of our nation’s treasury! How much can a nation and its citizen endure? We have massive looting of our nation’s treasury under the current civilian regime, poor roads, unstable power supply, armed robbers and kidnappers operating at will; massive unemployment among our young graduates, unrest in Delta and threat of Boko Haram and other social menace.

Nigeria will get better, I am proud to be Nigerian. Created a million time by God, I will still come back a Nigeria. Our tenacity, will and strength will pull us through. We simply just need to change our way of thinking, leaders and citizens. Leaders should have the moral conscience that they are positioned to serve the citizens and country, not raking exorbitant salaries that simply cannot be justified, They should provide an investment friendly environment for private companies to assist in providing jobs for the youths, provide electricity and good roads. we need to get out of this rot and achieve a brighter future that Nigerians deserve. Happy 52nd to my beloved country and its beautiful citizens!

    heart of Africa.
GREEN and WHITE are her colors.
They call her the giant of Africa. Yes, she’s got issues as any
    important personality will do ‘coz
of the attention she attracts from
    so many.
She just turned 52 and so many
feel she’s reached COUNTRYPAUSE (MENOPAUSE) and can’t produce
    good things anymore.
It took many of her counterparts
    centuries to produce offspring:
    GREAT BRITAIN became great after
becoming a grandfather. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA became united at the
    “Methuselah’s” age.
    She’s still undergoing the
    ‘growing’ process.
TO ALL NIGERIANS, Remember, no matter how far
you travel, wherever you find yourself, wherever the struggle
for a better life takes you.
    No matter the situation on
ground. NIGERIA IS STILL OUR BABY! and
her growth is up to us.
Remember this is who we are: ~ STRONG
    ~ SURVIVOR
    ~ SMART ~ JUST
    ~ PRUDENT
    ~ GREENWHITEGREEN
Soon, many will scale heights to obtain the GREEN passport.
Many will want to marry my children and grand children
    to be
    called GREEN.
    Come rain, come shine,
I’ll always be proud to be BLACK I’ll always be proud to fly GREEN
I’ll always be proud to be a NIGERIAN
I’ll always be proud to be called
    AFRICAN
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIGERIA!!!!
MY COUNTRY, MY COLOR, MY PRIDE, MY NIGERIA! GOD BLESS YOU, GOD BLESS ME, GOD

Excellent speech from President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and an equally insightful one from Pastor Ortisejafor. No one is perfect, and as much as some may criticize the president out of envy, an some out of good intentions, the fact remains that President Jonathan has performed well, given the targets he set for himself at the beginning of his tenure.perhaps, this is one thing people forget; that targets were set in the first place. There may be good and bad people in the cabinet, but that is just as there are good and people in the generality of Nigerians and among the masses. There is need to continue the journey towards improvement and actualization for Nigeria, and indeed, as the president implied, “It is a collective effort;” and i add, ” a collective effort that begins with individuals resolving in their hearts to stand up and be counted!”

We need to really contribute our quota as individuals to help our nation grow.It is unfortunate when we start running our leaders down from the begining of an administration to the end. This has lead to so much distraction in the course of delivering dividend of democracy. My personal opinion though,i feel our major problem is greed by the various ethnic and religious groups in the country. We are so incline to our various groupings such that the Nigeria project doesn’t matter to us any longer and worse is some greedy politicains capitalized on this to sow seed of discord and use the opportunity to gain cheap political relevance at the expense of our Nation.Until we respect, encourage and suport our leaders irrespective party affiliation, ethnic or religious background, nothing good can come out of our nation. We are all guilty because if as individuals have been able to manage our homes well,it would have collectively translsted to a better Nigeria.LEADERDHIP IS NOT CHILD’S PLAY.most critics of govt programmes and policies cann’t even manage their homes talkless of a local Government council.CRITICIZE CONSTRUCTIVELY AND CONTIBUTE IDEAS THAT WILL MOVE THE NATION FORWARD AND AVOID BACK BITING FOR CHEAP POLITICAL RELEVANCE. Those who truly love Nigeria should make sure that no politician emerges as the next President of the country. Fashola of Lagos State is a reference point. As evident right now, no politician as the necessary courage to what is necessary for Nigeria. We need an a courageos human rightist, a civil and widely exposed intelectual, like Prof. Wole Soyinka, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Prof. Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, etc. Nigerians and civil societies must demand and organize public demonstration as the ROAD to true FISCAL DEMOCRACY will not be easy but achievable if most Nigerians work together for this GOAL. The present political class cannot bring this goal to pass as they are first and foremost self-centered, but not people-centered.
We need a NATIONAL DIALOGUE where the way forward can be discussed and agreed upon without dividing the country. COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP WITH SOUND MIND IS NEEDED FOR THIS COUNTRY TO MOVE FORWARD. God bless Nigeria.

Prayers or faith without dedicated leadership and works is ineffective for a nation. Even the down trodden wants to embezzle when he gets to power. In and out traitors are in abundance. Some call for the external enemies to come to their rescue, while the inner ones are left at large. The zeal and love for the nation can be the only push to self deliverance and answer to prayers; otherwise ” to your tent oh Nigeria”, disband.

NIGERIA LEADERSHIP: THE PRESIDENCY IS NOT NORTHERN BIRTHRIGHT
The North (the Elders/Emirs/Politicians/the Caliphates/Feudalist Lords and the Boko Haram Sponsors) are behaving as if the Presidency is their birth right.
President Goodluck Jonathan is being systematically intimidated, threatened and harassed in order to drop his ambition to serve his second term in office which is his right, constitutionally and politically. The North treats the national wealth as their own property and heritage ( the NNPC / CBN, CUSTOMS & EXCISE, NPA, FCT, REFINERIRS/PETROLCHEMICALS PLANTS ETC) to share return every Friday to the Emirs/Political jobbers, the Oligarchy, the feudal Lords and the retired Generals. L Far less educated and experienced hands are appointed from the North to head these bodies, why? During the time of Abacha not to go too far back, Kano state produced more than seven ministers of cabinet rank but nobody shout from the North. Abacha was killing opposition people in the south then, No body from all these today’s elders talk about it.
All contracts awarded from the proceed of oil (the PTF were awarded to Northern interests and to northern geographic areas but nobody talk from the north why? Why is it that no Southerner has head the FCT administration since its creation?
The people of the South-South are so marginalised so much that no one hold meaningful office either in the military, the police or the NNPC / CBN, CUSTOMS & EXCISE, NPA, FCT, REFINERIRS/PETROLCHEMICALS PLANTS,NEPA ETC but why?
President Goodluck Jonathan should equally remember that other equally marginalised ethnic groups existed in the Niger Delta ( the Urhobos/Isoko, Ibibios, Calabaris, Efiks, Ogonis, the Ikwerre etc to be carried along in both ministerial appointment and appointment into key parastatals and ambassadorial appointment too.
No one can intimidate President Goodluck Jonathan into abandoning his God given birthright, constitutional right and his personal goodluck too.
When it comes to politics and election the Yoruba Muslims from Egba-Ibadan-Ilori and Oyo axis are always deceived by the Northern politicians into believing that it is a religion affairs. NO
The Northern politicians treat the South- South people as third class Citizen in their own country. The Ibos the Northern politicians treat as political jobbers. The Ibos should not allowed these Northern politicians to deceive them and later dumped and be treated in Kano like guinea pigs when it comes to religions riots.
However, this is the best opportunity for the convocation of National Conference to review our constitution to embedded Fiscal Federalism, devolution of power, split the country into six regions. A situation where Lagos state with its overwhelming population have 20 Local Government while Kano with similar (with the aid of manipulation have 42 is Not acceptable at all. Local Government and states were created to reward cronies and apologists.

We understand this and appreciate the contributions of all while at the same time beg the trouble shooters to have a rethink. @ GEJ, we have heard you that you can’t do it alone because leadership is a collective enterprise, but do you take advice or heed to calls ?

I thank the Almighty for His grace on our beloved country. Its however a pity that we have always been enveloped with people who do not have our interest at heart. The happening in Enugu state is a case in point. In the sea of poverty and hunger our beloveved Governor SULIVAN CHIME wants to pull down all the buildings that make the State Secrateriate in the name of giving Civil Servants enough space to work, That is not a priority for Enugu state now.He shld start paying the minimum which he refused to pay, build industries to close the high unemployment rate in the state, build low cost houses for the workers. I suggest H/E should avoid playing politcs with the future of Enugu state. Those buildings he s trying to pull down are deserving heritage for our people. He shld know that destroying is easy but building is difficult.Let this misadvice not mar his good effort in Enugu state. We cannot aford to be chasing shadow when there are so much substance to concern ourselves with. I believe he is a listening GOVERNOR ,he will hear the voice of reason.

To solve our problem we must change party, try another manifesto.

In the midst of enormous and serious problems confronting our Nation presently, we must still thank and appreciate God for keeping us together as one great Country.
My opinion about Mr President , GEJ is a gentleman from humble family background that finds himself in the midst of wicked and intolerant Men that have been our Country”s problem for over 30 years now because his party, PDP accommodates those Army Generals and their Civilian Cohorts that ruined Nigeria from 1980s till date, so Mr President should either disengage these known faces from his Party or he honorably joins another progressive party to pursue his transformation agenda, in doing so, he will become the greatest Nehemiah of our time.
The Children of PDP top men were those nabbed for stealing billions of Naira in oil subsidy scams, so no President on the platform of such a Party can deliver on his promises to the people of this Country.
My advice to all Nigerians is that we should have hope that things will surely get better for this great Nation and we must hold our destiny in our hands by making sure that will vote for a President that will do our wishes and that of God in 2015, we must stop voting along ethnic and religious lines for the President if we want God”s to answer our prayers for rapid development of Nigeria, the annulled presidential elections remained the most credible till date in Nigeria because the Nigerians who voted for MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe felt they would deliver on their promises if elected and then saw nothing wrong in Muslim\Muslim ticket, so, we should stop PDP in 2015 if they still parade the old Generals and their Civilian cohorts as their party Chieftains because good things can never come from wicked and heartless Leaders.
I wish all us a very happy Independence as Nigeria attained 52 years as an independent Nation from the British Imperialists.

In those days, what we have is happy Christmas (or Merry Christmas) and Happy New Year, and along the line Happy Easter also. The Muslims didn’t have happy anything then. This days, you have happy everything; new month, new week, happy Sunday, happy Monday and sometimes happy today and the funniest part is that people do this most times because they want to ask one favour or the other from you.
The one that is even very disgusting is happy independence, gush! A lot of people just love to shout and write happy independence. I doubt if they have ever taken time to check the true dictionary meaning of independence. Independence for a start is a ‘noun’ meaning it’s a (person, place or thing). We also have Independent, which is the ‘adjective’ form to qualify a ‘noun’ such as born fool, big fool. Hellooo!
Unfortunately many Nigerians including our leaders since 1960 because of the euphoria and attendant celebrations of freedom from colonial rule had come to constantly associate independence day (Oct 1) with doing things (verb) like military parade (which is alright), state house dinners (chopping tolotolo and chicken drum stick), school children match pass, etc. I remember my days in primary school; I was the lead boy in starched, well ironed uniform and cortina shoes. My mother used to sell them then and I could always dock two, one for me and the other for my girl friend.
But the hard truth is that when referring to or using the word independence there must be a cause or follow up such as independence ‘from something or somebody’. Is Nigeria therefore really independent ‘adjective’ or a born fool or big fool at 52 years? 95% mono economy reliant on just export of crude oil, which is natural resources, more than eighty universities but zero technology, 250% import reliant from tooth picks to bicycles, torch lights to baby wipes, lip sticks to panties (are you thinking what I am thinking), etc so how are we independent but we are actually 500% dependent on everything.
To hell with 52years of dependence and that is what we should be shouting and writing and believe me suddenly everybody will begin to adjust properly and face realities and then true INDEPENDENCE will come. To hell with dependence! End.

Happy independent to my fellow suffering and smiling Nigerians, we have to thank God for spearing our lives till this day irrespective of all the sufferings melted on the citizen by the ruling party headed by GEJ. Mr. president wants Nigerians to make sacrifices good has he sacrificed anything for the people of Nigeria? let us stop deceiving ourselves, he should tell us that he is not competent to lead Nigeria and we will understand, anyway I am not disappointed in him for I never place any confidence in him, for all I care he should complete his tenure and leave or our votes will teach him first lesson in Nigeria. We want a leader who will honestly and genuinely repair Nigeria and not a complainant leadership. May God continue to straighting suffering and smiling Nigerians. Amen
