Four-storey building collapses in Onitsha

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

In Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday, a four-storey building collapsed in the commercial city.

The building, which is yet to be completed, and located at 22, Nnewi Street, in Odoakpu community, consists of 14 flats and three shops.

But providence played a positive part, as people who normally work on the building site, had all closed for the day and gone home.

Sunday Sun learnt that no casualty was recorded in the incident, which happened at the wee hours of Saturday.

Mr Cletus Ezendo, an eyewitness and resident of Nnewi Street, said people in the neigbourhood were frightened when the building fell with a great noise and smoke oozing out from the rubble.

Ezendo said: “We rushed out only to discover that it was the uncompleted building, a pole from my resident, that fell flat. We thank God that nobody was living in the building yet and it happened when the workers constructing the fourth floor had completed their work and gone home.

“This morning, we learnt the collapsed building had affected a residential five-storey building close to it and had made cracks in that building.’

As at press time, some prospective tenants, who had already paid rent for the building, were seen worried over the recovery of their money.

Sunday Sun could not get the owner of the building or his contractor to ascertain exactly what led to the collapse of the building.

……..”and you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free”…… Whatsoever one sow, the same shall he reap!!! If and ony If the builders will tell themselves and the public the truth, I strongly belive that they all knows that the building will colapse as its formations are of sub-standard. Thank God no innocent person died or injured in the incident, however if ground needed blood i would have prefer that of if not all at least one of the builders and owner, that will sever as deterant for that will want to imitate.

HIGH RISE BUILDINGS NEED PROPER SUPERVISION BY THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES FROM FOUNDATION BUT IN NIGERIA CORRUPTION IS THE ORDER. YOU CAN GET ALL NECESSARY APPROVALS WITHOUT THE AUTHORITIES EVEN VISITING THE SITE TALKLESS OF SATISFYING THE MATERIALS. ONLY JESUS CAN SAFE.

A solid building requires a solid foundation which is directly proportional to cost of production. Anything less than this will give you a shoddy foundation which will eventually collapse. This act is tantamount to greed and taking short cuts. Lets learn from the parable of Jesus Christ our best teacher about building and foundation (Luke 6:48, 49). Soup wey sweet na money kill amm!

To GOD be the that nobody die in the incidence. Though its big lost to the owner of the building but that should be a big lesson to him and other landlord so that whenevr they wants to build a public building, they should do that with a durable materials.

As a fellow buider, i think the cause of the collapse resulted from improper design specification owing to poor contractors not following the standards provide by the BS-code or Euro code. Sometimes i dont doubt the reason for building failure in nigeria cos some building owners prefer cheap engineers leading to quack constrns. Well to God be the glory no casualty.

It is very unfortunate and painful that buildings are still collapsing killing innocent nigerians trying to earn a living despite the serious advise being giving by professionals in the built enviroment sector in different forums to the three tiers of govt in this country to prevent further collapses. The contractor is a business concern, he can be a dog or a goat but the building regulation law must make it mandatory that a PROFESSIONAL BUILDER whose training is to manage the process of construction as well as the supervision of artisans and craftsmen is engaged by the contractor before any construction work commences. This must be requested for before final approval is granted for any development. This is the only way someone can be held responsible when a building collapses.Without this, buildings will sadly continue to collapse in this country. The regulation of the construction process is a MUST if we MUST avert future collapses. Construction process management is a professional work and not all comers affairs. ENOUGH of the loss of lives, properties and disgrace to the country
