Enugu Intl Airport: 6 landowners dead

From PETRUS OBI, Enugu

Six landowners among persons whose houses were demolished and property acquired by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for the expansion of the Enugu Airport have been reported dead, just as the legal battle for compensation continues to linger.

Yesterday, the Federal High Court in Enugu again adjourned ruling in the matter, which had pitched the Enugu State Government on war path with the former land owners at the Airport Hillview and Layout. Trial judge, Justice D. V Agishi, adjourned the matter to November 19, 2012 when counsel to the state government failed to appear in court. The move to upgrade the Enugu Airport to international standard led to the acquisition of the land by the government in 2009, through the state Ministry of Lands, with a promise to compensate the landowners.

Chairman of the Airport Hillview and Layout Landlords Association, Mr. Emmanuel Onoh, told journalists after the adjournment that some of them who started the fight had lost their lives. Said he: “We have since agreed to give the land to government. It belongs to government, but we are saying that we must be compensated and quickly. Already six people have died waiting for government’s compensation. Two others are very sick due to the shock they received from government’s acquisition of our land.

“Most of us are still very worried and our health is fast deteriorating because we have not had money to buy another land equivalent to what we bought the land at Airport Hillview and Layout to build the houses some years ago. The landowners, under the auspices of Airport Hillview and Layout Neighbourhood Watch, dragged the state government to court in 2010 when it failed to redeem its promise to pay them compensation.

Counsel to the landowners, Mr. Nwabueze Ugwu, said it was not the first time the matter was being adjourned, adding that the essence was to see if the case would be settled out of court amicably. “Due to the nitty-gritty of the case, we didn’t ask for judgment today.

If we had done, we would have been given. Between now and November 19, we would still wait and see if the government would be positive about it.”

This is insensitivity on the part of govt., alway subjecting its citizen to shock and trauma. Today is demolition, 2morrow is evacuation, next 2morrow another thing. Which way 9ja!

It is a shame that Chime and his cabinets, could not handle this better, instead they are busy filling their leaking pockets. How do you explain that poor innocent citizens will devot all energy fighting the government over compensation for the lands taken from them for years. If the administration means well compensation plan should have been established before the land acquisition. Families are ruined by governor and his people and something has to be done fast, is bad enough that they lost their lands, do they have to loss their lives too. Perhaps, Chime has forgotten that God will judge us and will repay everyone accordingly. What ever you sow, so shall you reap

This chime i can not really diagnose his character due to docile attitude of Enugu people who are not providing people outside the state with his performance index to enable gauge his heart beat and direction.I should understand that the move of Federal Government to expand and upgrade the airport to international status is a welcome idea. However,it presupposes that the Governor should ensure that land owners interest are protected.God does not take lightly issue of land especially when people are forcefully deprived of their inheritance,it always attract God’s wrath which I would not wish you, hence the need to ensure there is justice in this matter.

I love your comment. I am an indigene of Enugu. The “docile” character of Enugu people is killing the state. Same I don’t care attitude was recently showed by Enugu people when their Governor decided to waste a whooping borrowed 13billion for a secretariat project that the state does not need while every other facet of life in the state is dead. Human development at the state level is at horrible level. Unemployment is at the highest level and Enugu indigenes are all over the world doing a heck of menial jobs because they cannot find anything reasonable to do at home.
Enugu state Government should be leading the way in making sure that these land owners are paid for their property but that is not happening.
Come to think of it, Enugu State Government with the other arms of government (Enugu State House) should be in the forefront to ensure that the Airport project is completed and put into use for the benefit of the state economy.
What stops the Government of Enugu State from approaching foreign airlines Delta, Lufthansa, United, Ethad, Emirates, Ethiopian, Arik etc from initiating direct flights from Enugu to Asia via Dubai and Daho; to USA; and to Europe. They state government could even go into a survey/ study (government sponsored) with these airlines to would be customers to confirm that the route (Enugu to …..) is very viable. What stops Enugu state government from building a 4 or 5 star hotel in the neighborhood of the airport and entice these airlines with free access to the hotel facilities by their crew men for the first one to two years of their operation and other tax incentives. That is the only ways to kick start the project. We must not wait for the Federal Government, knowing fully well that nothing would happen if we do not initiate some of these projects.
Enugu has a golden opportunity to do what I have enumerated above with the help of the current aviation minister who I can say authoritatively would be very helpful in ensuring that this is done. It may not happen when she leaves as aviation minister. Let us be wise!
Enugu people (Governor, House members, civil society, Labor union etc) should wake up and stop this their docile and lazy attitude to life and be proactive.

Misleading, sensational and crap news. I thought from the headline that somebody murdered them or something. It turned out that their land was acquired by government and they are awaiting compensation. Nobody said they won’t be paid. The landowners are already doing what they should do- form a pressure group to fight their cause. So this piece of news sponsored crap.

Enugu State government is evil. Why make haste to acquire people’s land and wait for them to die before you pay any compensation? Those in government that perpetrate this are boko haram people in government. They own today, surely they will not own tomorrow. I want them to imagine how they would feel in their old age if somebody come to take over all they have laboured for all the years.
