Court sends Ogun monarch to prison•For contempt

By Moshood Adebayo, Abeokuta

An Ogun State High Court sitting at Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state has ordered a traditional ruler in the state, Chief Lasisi Kolapo Ogunseye to be remanded in prison for two months for alleged contempt. The presiding Judge, Justice Mobolaji A. Ojo frowned at the attitude of Ogunseye over his refusal to appear before him as ordered.

Ogunseye is one of the coronet Obas installed by the Olowu of Owu-Abeokuta, Oba Adegboyega Olusanya Dosunmu along with others in 2006. The court lamented that Ogunseye had refused to show up in court to answer to the contempt charge against him or even send a representative as demanded by law. It will be recalled that Oba Matanmi had filed the contempt charge against Ogunseye on May 17, 2012 at the court.

Oba Matanmi, in his application alleged that after he had won several cases against Ogunseye at the High court on the stool of Onijoko of Ijoko-Ota, Ogunseye continued to  parade himself as another Onijoko of Ijoko as well as attending public functions with full regalia of an Oba. The lead counsel for Matanmi, Barrister S. O. Ola, while moving the motion for the committal to prison told the court that Ogunseye had been behaving as if he was  above the law. Ola told the court that Ogunseye continued to flout court orders with impunity without regard to the rule of law, even though he was properly served with all the court processes.

In his ruling, the Judge said: “This application therefore succeeds and it is granted as prayed. The respondent/party cited is guilty of the orders of this court. He adds: “I hereby order that the respondent, Lasisi Kolapo Ogunseye, be arrested forthwith and remanded in prison custody for a period of 60 days in the first instance until he purges himself of his contempt of this court,” .

Justice Ojo also ordered that a copy of the order should be served on the Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Ota, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, the Attorney-General of Ogun State and the governor of Ogun State. According to him, “each and everyone of the above mentioned shall exercise his constitutional and statutory powers and authority to execute this order without delay.”

Law has no respect of anybody or group of people, to lead it must be by an example not by arrogant. In any decent society such Oba suppose to be removed with immediate event and replace with responsible who deserve the position according to tradition of the land.

A good way of despencing judgment, some people just feel they are above the law. This will make him know otherwise.
