Convoys clash: Okorocha abused power –Anyanwu

•Gov’s aide: Senator breached security

FROM GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri

Senator Chris Anyanwu, who represents Imo East (Owerri) in the National Assembly, yesterday described as a misplaced show of state power by Governor Rochas Okorocha whose convoy did not only push her car off the road but that the governor allegedly ordered her security to be disarmed and watched from his car while her drivers were dragged out of the cars and brutally assaulted.

But the state government in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, said that the Senator allegedly committed serious security breach against the  governor which requires further investigations.

“The Senator’s vehicle suddenly rammed into the governor’s convoy close to the staff car, cutting off the pilot security vehicle after allegedly overtaking dangerously and in a very suspicious manner,” Uzoukwa said.
However,  Senator Anyanwu, who spoke with journalists at her Owerri residence yesterday, described the actions of the governor’s securitymen as frightening and brutish, alleging that she had been harassed, intimidated and threatened in the past at several occasions in the state.

Explaining the clash between her convoy and the governor’s securitymen, Senator Anyanwu said that, “my day started around 9.30am when I visited the governor at the Government House on Tuesday to exchange pleasantries. He asked if I had adequate security and I said yes after which I left for my hometown, Mbaise.

“When we got to Azara Egbelu along Owerri/Umuahia Road, we heard a siren coming behind us and when it grew louder, we parked to allow the convoy to pass, but surprisingly, the approaching convoy which comprised of truck loads of armed and stern-looking men double-crossed us and pulled out two of my drivers and dragged them into the bush where they were mercilessly beaten and left one of the drivers, Odilichukwu, with broken skull and bruises.
“When I could not bear it any more, I rushed out of my car with bare feet and started shouting: I am Senator Chris Anyanwu, please, don’t kill my driver, but one of the armed men charged at me and threatened to shoot me for running into the governor’s convoy. All these while, the governor was sitting in his car with the glass rolled down and I heard him shout at his securitymen to disarm my orderlies”, the Senator said.

Anyanwu, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, described the governor’s action as “a misplaced show of power. The power of the state is so enormous and you don’t need to intimidate, harass or kill your people to assert your powers as a governor. I am tired of all these abuses and harassment in this state. It is not only in Imo State that they have female legislators. If they could do this to me, what would happen to the ordinary people? This has to stop,”Anyanwu said.

However, the state government described Senator Anyanwu’s conduct as a security breach, unbecoming of someone of her position, adding that her outburst of anger could have resulted to heavy casualty if not for the discipline of the governor’s securitymen, who displayed high sense of decency, professionalism and maturity.
“Surprisingly, Senator Anyanwu who no doubt knew the convoy was that of the Governor of Imo State alighted from her car and allegedly ordered her naval security personnel to open fire. The senator further went berserk by slapping both the governor’s aide-de- camp and Chief Security Detail. She also allegedly rained abuses on the governor”, Uzoukwa said.

You guys are just jumping into conclusion without thinking positively. Without independent verification, how can u believe Senator Anyawu, Gov. Okorocha and their spokesman.

Gov. Rochas is doing well to improve the living standard of the people of Imo state. But his style of leadership is questionable. He is behaving like a motor park tout and a bushman.

I am sure by the time he leaves the office, he would hae made more enemies than friends. And those backing him now, will turn against him.

Rochas is not a good politician.

when two people fight, only God knows who is at fault, as each one will claim right. Nevertheless being the Governor of the State, tolerate both low and high. I want Governor Rochas Okorocha to govern his State well, because he is a material for Presidency in the near future.

We are still battling with GEJ and you are talking of Rochas. Let us not elect any leader again based on sentiment. Okorocha is NOT any material for the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

You are right my big brother.

Okorocha will go down as one of the worest governors in imo state. He believes he can carry the people of imo state on his fore head. He behaves like ocho passanger (agboro). He wants to solve peoples problem yet he cannot listen to anybody.

The state is bigger than a person. He cannot run the state as a private enterprise. He must have a listen ears and give honour to whom honour is due. contravsery, contravery and contravery are trailing him here and there.

Okorocha, is not politically matured to leader the igbos on national issues. Okorocha definitely needs more political apprentice to be able to forge ahead.

This story is contradicting each other. One thing I have observed as a political scientist and a concerned citizen is that Okorocha do not know the limit of his power . He uses state power “nakedly”

You are very correct. I think he is raw and acts often like a semi illiterate.
This is not the first time his aids are accused of violence and highhandedness.
I can still remember his aids’s actions at Enugu when they clashed with the aids of one of the governors of the south east.
Governor Rochas please borrow a leaf from our Fashola who does not use siren in Lagos.
I have encountered Fashola’s convoy on two occasions and they did not push ordinary people like us off the road.

Both Senator Anyanwu and Gov. Okorocha should realize that the power they have is very very very temporary. Anything can happen tomorrow. So humility is the answer.

Its just something have to over look sometimes, rochas can also let it go, he is a leader, and when you are serving the masses, the spirit of tolorance must be found in you, to tolorate things to some levels, before acting, when two elephant are fighting, the problem are the elephant, but the grasses, rochas and the sentor were not hurt or bruis, but their security men and their drivers, may God help us.

Does the Governor tell the truth? I do not see him here telling the truth if his convoy was coming from behind the senator. It is sure that they parked to give the governor and his convoy way. I have also been a victim of the governor’s show of power. It is either the governor is not intelligent or he has not learned from the mistake of Ikedi Ohakim on the consqeuences of misusing his power. At the poor and tight Nekede bridge, the governor and his convoy will prefer to push the people into the drain to repairing the bridge and making it accessible to all. I think the governor has bad advisers. Is he not APGA? What is the fight with an APGA senator? Let the governor not confirm the suspicions around him.

    • Ngozi December 28, 2012 at 9:52 am - Reply

Gbam!, You put it in a better way: he is not intelligent. In my earlier post, I said he is semi- literate but a literate person can still not be intelligent, not to talk of a semi- literate person.

IT IS A SHAME FOR THE GOVERNOR AND THE SENATOR TO ACT THE WAY THEY ACTED. WHEN THE GOV’S CONVOY WAS APPROACHING, THE SENATOR SHOULD HAVE PULLED OUT OF THE ROAD TO ALLOW THE CONVOY TO PASS. (ONE) THE GOVERNOR SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED HIS SECURITY MEN TO DRAG THE SENATORS DRIVERS INTO THE BUSH TO BEAT THEM UP. THE GOVERNOR IS THE SERVANT OF THE PEOPLE. WHEN HE SAW THAT IT WAS SENATOR C. ANYANWU, HUMILITY SHOULD HAVE DICTATED TO HIM TO DO SOMETHING BETTER THAN TELLING HIS SECURITY MEN TO DIS ARM THE SENATOR’S SECURITY MEN. (TWO) THE SENATOR CAME TO EXCAHANGE PLEASANTRIE WITH THE GOVERNOR. NON OF OUR PUBLIC OFFICERS ARE HUMBLE. THAT IS WHY THINGS ARE NOT WORKING IN THIS COUNTRY.. REMEMBER THAT WHEN DEATH COMES, SENATOR, GOVERNOR, ASSEMBLY MEN AND ORDINARY PEOPLE WILL NOT ESCAPE BECAUSE OF THEIR POSITION. POWER CORRUPTS AND ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY. ARROGANCE MEETS WITH ARROGANCE. SHAMEFUL THAT THESE TWO PEOPLE WE LOVE ARE BEHAVING LIKE THIS . SHAME, SHAME.

What a show of shame. Present Nigerian political elite have the mentality and reasoning ability of a 6 year old toddler. I feel sorry for the people they preside over. Did I read it right that Anyanwu had naval aides attached to her, just for being the navy commitee chairman?

I am shocked and ashamed that Governor Okorocha could descend so low to humiliate a Lady in this way.Lady Chris Anyanwu is a house hold name in Nigeria and deserve to be respected. As a renowned journalist with NTA as Opec correspondent during the days of Rilwan lookman ,in Geneva and Aret Adams of blessed memory. We also recall vividly as if it were yesterday her battle against late former DIG Fidelis Oyakhilome the then pioneer chairman of NDLEA.Her detention saga at DMI by Abacha and his sons who wanted to abuse her during detention as publisher of TSM Magazine at Ilupeju. Her struggle for justice and human right crusade, all put together endeared her to the hearts of many Nigerians not to talk of her raven beauty which mesmerized many men of power under IBB regime. But inspite of all that she remained undaunted and has continue to pursue a better living condition for her people.More than any other consideration ,Chris deserve to move freely in any part of the state wether she aspires as governor should not be reason for her to be intimidated by Rochas.Women world over are noted for their resilient spirit to surmount all forms of challenges wether political or economical.Like her counter part in Myamar,Burmer, parkistan,Philipian,Brazil, women have been the driving force of their economies.Hence, its about time our men should take a back seat and allow our wonderful women to point way forward for us.

All these comments are emotional as none of the commentators was there as an eye witness. So it is not proper to pass judgements based on what was read. However my take on this case is that as public citizens who know each other very well, the gladiators should have found a more friendly and jovial way to sort out the issue without engaging in this public show of shame which is unbecoming of public servants. The commenting public should not take sides in issues involving politicians. When they will be dining and wining together none of us will be there. They know how to sort themselves out. So enough of these hate comments, please.

Good morning Senator Chris Anyanwu… This is just the beginning…. By the way.. You taught Gov. Rochas how to use maximum force.. It was just yesterday that you engineered the use of military tanks, during the election. Wait … More and more actions await you and the lot of you…

This man called Okorocha really need to watch his steps. This man was voted in power without him spending a dime simply because Imo citizens wanted a change yet he turned out to be the worst.I am from Imo state and i know exactly what the situation on ground is.The so called free education was one of those political statement. He is only interested in fronting corrupt Chinese businessmen to buy up Imo state properties and building his personal Hotel under few months of becoming a Governor,Encouraging and defraud local contractors to obtain loans for road construction yet he frustrated them leaving them with huge debt that led to death of most of them and hanging allegation on them that they could not finish the construction work just to score cheap political pass mark.People who read through the papers at the beginning were praising you but no evil can be hidden under the sun now the result are coming out early enough.
Before this time people felt he was a billionaire but non of them could give account or name any of your visible establishment apart from the foundation funded by international organisations which you cant even give proper account of the fund but take that credit for attracting such international organisation but a State is a different ball game and not your fathers property. If you are a governor does it give you any special right to overtake, clear everyone away from the road?apart from a senator can,t you give women certain respect in your life? I have been most places in this world mayor of London accompanied by his wife knocked on my door to give me their poster without dog not to talk of police.Did you watch the (PLEB)controversy between a junior police and a minister of culture last two months in Prime ministers house? The minister came to a cabinet meeting with a bicycle watch it in you tube. Why are you damaging this State,You really need to learn the act of governance and respect,The state is very dirty to a fault, the people are now getting poorer. No economic activity is moving in the state. Imo people never rested till they booted Ohakim,we know you are in a hurry to empty the treasure of Imo state because it is dawn on you that the people are standing up.In churches is one song,in the market one song,in the government establishment same song and in every public forum in imo state same song about you and it goes like this “IKIRI KA ONYE OSHI NMA”THE BUSH BOY IS BETTER THAN A THIEF.(During OHAKIM era he was called IKIRI now ROCHAS is called a THIEF.This song says it all.
