Four female members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) were at the weekend, kidnapped in Rivers State. They were, however, rescued by a team of security agents. They were abducted at the NYSC Transit Camp, Iriebe, near Oyigbo, by a gang of seven armed men that gained entry into the camp through a collapsed fence.
Daily Sun gathered that when the bandits entered the camp, they gained access into the corps members’ room, through windows and doors that had no burglar proof. The gunmen had field day carting away handsets, laptops and yet –to- be disclosed sum of money. In the midst of the confusion, some of the corps members ran helter-skelter, in a bid to escape the attack and in the process, got injured. It was gathered that those wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, said police responded immediately they received information about the invasion. According to him, Oyigbo Police Division swung into action and mobilised policemen to dislodge the gunmen. “We gave the hoodlums a hot chase towards Egbelu/Oyigbo axis.
The hoodlums abandoned the girls, as the police closed in on them and disappeared into the bush,” he said. He also confirmed that some of the corps members were wounded during the attack. Daily Sun tried to contact the NYSC boss in Rivers, Mr. Benjamin Esan, but did not pick his call.

U people should scrap this program and use the money for something else since u guys cannot protect the corps menbers.
we see that corpers are well safe in southern part of country as they are speculating in south that corpers should not be posted to north be
This is to say that corp members are well saved in southern part of the country , than the northern part of the country.

I do agree that the NYSC programme should be scrapped. If the government cannot provide full scholarships to our students despite our oil wealth,it has no moral obligation to require they serve the country for a year.The programme is not well funded and with the safety situation now,the scheme has outlived its usefulness.
