Former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu has said that there is need to elect an Igbo man as president in 2015 if the country must make progress, just as he dispelled insinuation that he scuttled Dr. Alex Ekwueme’s presidential ambition in 1999. Kalu, who is the founder of Njiko Igbo, a socio-political group committed to advancing the Igbo interest in the country, stated this yesterday while speaking as guest on “Platform”, a Radio Nigeria political programme. He said the need for a president of Igbo extraction had become imperative because apart from the South-East, all other sections of the country had opportunity of producing a president.
Consequently, Kalu said in the interest of equity and fair play, other parts should allow an Igbo man to emerge as president in 2015, pointing out that as at today, the Igbos were the most populous ethnic group in the country. His words: “I am not even canvassing for Nigerian president. I am saying that an Igbo man should be president in 2015. It matters where the president comes from because all segments of the society had been president. People continue letting Ndigbo down because they think we were defeated during the war, which is not true.
And until an Igbo man rules this country, the country will not move anywhere.” Speaking on Njiko Igbo, the former governor explained that the socio-political group was geared towards mobilising all Igbo sons and daughters to champion the cause of Ndigbo. He said the group was neither tied to any political party nor out to displace other existing platforms in the South-East. According to him, “we are not trying to do the job of Ohanaeze. We are not trying to do the job of Aka Ikenga. We are not trying to do the job of Igbo Congress or any other Igbo platform. The Njiko Igbo is totally socio-political.
It is purely an avenue to get back all political parties that are Igbo-based and see if they can become one platform to win an election any day and any time. Those organisations are socio-cultural. We are socio-political. We don’t hide it. Njiko Igbo cannot put anybody on any platform to run for election because it is not a political party. We want to get all political players to see if they can agree together.” He expressed optimism that the organisation would be able to get 65-70 percent of Ndigbo to agree on the Igbo project.
Speaking on the role he played in the emergence of former president Olusegun Obasanjo as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999, Kalu said he told Ekwueme in 1998 that the military had zeroed in on Obasanjo as the next president. He said he had alerted the former vice president to this, so that he could negotiate with the military, especially as Obasanjo had already made some commitments to the North. The former governor said instead of Ekwueme’s group appreciating him for his suggestions, he was called an “apostle of doom” and asked out of the house for speaking the truth.
“I told Ekwueme in his house in 1998 that the military had made up their mind on President Obasanjo. I told him this in his house to enable him talk to the military. I heard from a reliable source that the military had made up their mind to give the presidency to the West to pacify them for June 12. I explained all these to him. Instead of appreciating what I said, they sent me out for speaking the truth. I never scuttled anybody’s political wellbeing. I only spoke the truth to them even before the convention.
I told them to go to the military and negotiate because Obasanjo had gone and made promises. I told him that if he didn’t do that, it meant he was not ready for leadership. I told him ‘this is where this people are going and unless you go and negotiate with them, it would be disastrous’. They said I was an apostle of doom and I left the house.” On the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, he called for the creation of at least an additional state for the South-East.
However, he stated that in a situation where the National Assembly would want to create states in other geo-political zones, then the South-East should get more than one state to bring it at par with other zones. Furthermore, Kalu said the constitution should be amended to make for only one legislative house at the federal level. He also canvassed that the legislature should be a part time job. He said it did not make sense to use 25 percent of the budget in servicing the federal legislature, especially when there were serious developmental challenges confronting the country.

While Igbo presidency is a fantastic idea, and will surely give our nation a quantum lift, the Igbo people needs to convince other ethnic natoinalties in the country that it will not make headship of national institutions an exclusive preserve of the Igbos.

I think any one stressing that the president of country must come from a particular region is only directly or indirectly stoking the embers of tribalism, division and alienation. A true national leader will see beyond the part of the country s/he come from. Your creative thinking should be all inclusive. It is because we haven’t learnt to think how to position Nigeria in the forefront of the most developed in the world. All that will have now is selfish, sectional and greedy leadership. When a president from one part is presiding over the looting of Nigeria’s sovereign wealth to the benefit of mostly his part, others feel cheated. This is why the Hausas want to have hausa man their as president, the ibo man want his kinsman there, the yorubas and a chorus from the minority groupings. We truly need to learn from Icon like Papa Nelson Mandela of South Africa whose vision is all inclusive. Bill Clinton would not have emerged as president from a small state if this is how the politicians there think. Nor Obama.

I really get disturbed that contemporary politics and politicians are now the symbol of identity of their people. It is more so, when people associate ethnic nationalities with the character of politicians emerging from there.
This is what I mean: Most people would think that the Igboman is an Azikiwe or an Ojukwu; or that the Yorubaman is an Awolowo or a Tinubu; or that a Hausaman is an Abukakar or an Abacha, or a Babangida or a Buhari.
Granted, these politicians, with all their natural traits, both pros and cons, electorally or “selectorally” represented their people, in the minds of the public, they are equated to their tribes of origin. That is the unfortunate thing about political representation: you enter with your character or idiosyncrasies, your people are tagged with those characteristics.
Though inevitable, this is very unfortunate and unfair for obvious reasons:
1. Political selection is not usually fair. Rigging can throw up a bag person to power. He might not really be the people’s favourite representative.
2.Money plays a very big role in electioneering issues. It could go to the highest bidder.
3.Politics for a long time in African was and is still viewed somewhat as stock-in-trade for people of rough and questionable behaviour. This means that the best people might refrain from showing up for the reason they do not want to taint their image by joining this questionable vocation.
Whatever the reason, the people who occupy the reins of office are usually the rough, not well cultured people. It is like choosing the fouth or fifth eleven, rather than the first, in a football competition. There would certainly have been a few exceptions.
What is the point I am trying to make, you may wonder?
Nigerian present-day politicians have become the prism through which ethnic nationalities are seen, perceived and interpreted. This keeps the majority of the silent and nonpartisan political populace bewildered and wrongly perceived and evil-tagged.
This silent but modal group includes quiet villagers, respectable teachers and professors, religious leaders, and others. These are collectively painted black by these unscrupulous politicians against their will; reason: rigging, money politics, and issues associated with the interest political kingmakers within or outside the ethnic groups.
Today, we hear of the Igbo being the worst people in Nigeria today, a scorecard I clearly see as totally false and misrepresenting. You would appreciate how I feel if you had known the Igbo in the sixties and early seventies, and if you had known they in their core homeland.
People talk of the Yoruba as a terrible people. Why? This is because we all see them from the prism of partisan politics championed by a few people who happened to emerge on the scene. This painting continues.
I do not intend to say that ethnic nationalities have no faults attributable to them collectively and sociologically. Every person or group has its own bad side and good side. But the vices seem to be escalated beyond what exists on ground with the majority of the people, just because of people coming up for political contention of partisan and tribe-versus-tribe basis.
It is a challenge to our scholars and researchers to probe further into this matter and see how such the puzzle can be resolved, for a fairer existence and co-existence. oparawhyte@yahoo.com

The Igbo land is full of educated derelicts, whereas in making of many books there shall be no end. One should be asking:-What kind of tribe are this Igbo’s of Nigeria? What exactly are they made of? Who are they? So many questions like that. Many of we Igbo did not witness the Biafra civil war and many of us did not fight the war.
My late father fought the war and told me the entire story and how it ended. In my school days I red about some books wrote by Achebe. To me such impression by Achebe, compared to what my father told me was the only truth. Because Achebe kept records, many wonders why Achebe withheld the publication of this very book till this his striking age. Yes he has been looking to hear, even to read from who among the real Igbo’s can come up with a thing like that or similar to his records. Yet non among them ever did that .To him, I and many other Igbo’s.
The death of Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu the Ikemba 1 seems that a great hope is lost. Achebe knew the sufferings of Igbo indigenes and imagining his age, he wrote with tear to alert the dangers of this selfish self imposed arrogance and negligence among the enslaved Igbo’s all over the world and to unite them together for unity,peace,progress, and freedom of the Igbo’s. Ever since I was born here in Nigeria as Igbo man, this is my 39yrs of suffering in this country Nigeria. In my sufferings, I witness truly that we Igbo’s are enslaved to the Nigerian government and all our rights as citizen are denied of us. How long shall the wicked triumph? All the Igbo’s in Diaspora even till today are big for nothing Igbo’s. Anybody is free to tell Achebe anything he like but be rest assured that in due time Igbo’s must regain freedom. No matter where you are as long as you are an Igbo man, for sure you must succeed. Who else can deliver us when all of us fear to die? Many of you in Diaspora think staying there is the best solution for your life but is a big lie.
Nigerian government doesn’t really know how tourism helps in developing a nation. Up till now, there is only one bridge to the Eastern states of Nigeria. Each government comes and award contracts of another second Niger bridge and go, yet nothing is done. Up till now Igbo’s especially those in Diaspora will not reason that one day terrorist like Boko Haram of this day may decide to change name and attack the only gate way to the Igbo’s. Where do I stop? All in the name of politics, Igbo politicians betray fellow Igbo man just for the sake of money and power. Check records of all the killing across the Nigerian states; you will see that Igbo’s are mostly killed. Nigerian government now capitalize on this stories and say; that Igbo’s are not united , Igbo’s are minority, Igbo’s are for buy and sell , they are not in peace, the are not educated, no Igbo presidency come 2015 and so on. Since I was born the former president Olusegun Obasanjo regime has been in power till now. The Igbo’s should note that it was this same Obasanjo that led the Nigerian army troops across River Niger to capture the Biafra war lords and killing of many Igbo’s both man and woman and children.
If you say the truth, they will kill you. I am writing from an experience that even if I die I will not be afraid of them that only kill the flesh but of him who after killing the flesh has power to destroy the soul which is God. Igbo’s both home and abroad should rise on our feet and give this Nigerian government a big challenge whatsoever that another second bridge should be completed within a very shot time or allow us to construct another second bridge for ourselves and bring tourism to the grassroots of all the eastern states of Nigeria.
Are we still the Igbo’s of this age? Why are we still scattered everywhere like sheep without shepherd? Why are we the majority and still suffer like minority? Why all this threat imposed in us? What is the materialization of our inventive genius as Igbo? Is it not time to act for ourselves for a true federalism? We are equal to the task. Biafra is not a religion as people view it, rather a doctrine of peace and progress among the people. I don’t aim my write up to division of this country but that Igbo’s should understand that they are up to being a nation and must work towards it.
