By PETER ANOSIKE

The rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway by Messrs Julius Berger and Messrs Reynolds Construction Company Limited would be completed in the next eight weeks. This was revealed by the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen when he came to monitor the stage of work on the road yesterday. He also assured those who would be traveling for the yuletide that the road would be motorable before then.

The Minister expressed happiness with the level of deployment of machinery as well as the level of work that the companies had done within the last one week. According to him, Federal Government terminated the concession agreement on the rehabilitation /reconstruction of the Lagos–Ibadan dual carriageway to enable urgent rehabilitation works be carried out and reduce carnage as well as enhance safe traffic on the road.

He said that following government’s determination to realize the objective, the Federal Ministry of Works engaged the services of the two reputable contractors-Messrs Julius Berger and Reynolds Construction Company.

The minister said that Julius Berger was handling the Lagos-Shagamu interchange section while Messrs Reynolds Construction Company Limited was handling the section two which was Shagamu-Ibadan. He said the contractors were mandated to ensure that all failed sections of the road were recovered and made motorable especially during the yuletide season in line with the Federal Ministry of Works ‘Operation Safe Passage on our roads’.

According to him, both contractors had mobilized and were fully on ground and were expected to complete the contract on schedule.. His words,“I wish to assure Nigerians that the Federal Government is committed and determined to provide good motorable roads in all parts of the country, in consonance with the transformation agenda of Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Specifically, the Federal Government is irrevocably committed to the full construction of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which is part of arterial route A 1, and also a major economic artery in Nigeria.”

The Minister said that after the rehabilitation of the expressway, contract would then be awarded for the main reconstruction of the road according to the design.. On the fate of Bi Courtney, he said that there was always an exit in every contract. According to him, even recently three road contracts were terminated in India because the contractors failed to meet up with the contractual requirements. He said that the contract was terminated and that after the emergency repair of the road, the contract for the total reconstruction would be advertized and interested contractors would bid for it.

  2. when the road kills many people they will start to repair. The big wigs dont travel by road it is only the poor that surfers in Nigeria God will help us.

  3. WHO SAID THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT. THEY KNEW ONLY THAT CORRUPTION DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT BEFORE GOD AND MAN. DID THEY NOT SEE JULIUS BERGER BEFORE THEY AWARDED THE CONTRACT TO THE THIEF..
NOW HOW MUCH HAS NIGERIA LOST IN THE FIRST CONTRACT TO Bi Courtney. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SOMEWHERE KNEW SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE THEN CONTRACT WAS AWARDED TO SOMEONE HOW HAS NOT DONE ANY CONFIRMED CONTRACT IN NIGERIA.
WE ARE WATCHING. JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING.

The urgency and seriousness attached to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the calibre of contractors – Julius Berger and RCC – have shown the dishonesty and hypocricy of the Federal Government in handling the major roads in the Southeast.
So it is possible for Lagos Ibadan road to be ready in eight weeks?

Just take a tour of Onitsha Enugu road, right from Upper Iweka through Zik’s house to Nkpor, Ogidi towards Awka and Enugu, you sorry for the road users.

Yet, your experience on this road is just a tip of the iceberg compared to the deplorable and dilapidated state of Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt road.
Do I need to mention the forgotten Onitsha-Nnewi-Akokwa-Okigwe road?

It is only those who hardly leave the comfort of their room to travel around the country, will sit down and award marks of success and good performance to this present government in terms of fixing our roads.

Let me use this opportunity to call on the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, to please, please, in the name of God, or in the name of anything he holds too dear, to show the same level of zeal and enthusiasm he has displayed towards the reconstruction of Lagos Ibadan Expressway to all the federal roads in the Southeast.

Igbos are still part of Nigeria. When we start agitating now, they will call us names and say ‘Igbos have come again.’

  5. If it takes eight weeks to complete – how many weeks will it take to fail?
Mr. Minister, we need permanent roads that are not built for Christmass travel with Messrs Julius Berger, etc. Time to look for better road builders from US or “Soludonise” Nigerian companies to takeover from some of these out-dated voo-doo companies.
