• Prominent sons, daughters to be recognised too
Item community, in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, will tomorrow honour some prominent sons and daughters as well as other eminent Nigerians at the Item Day ceremony. Among non-indigenes of the community to be honoured are former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Primate of the Methodist Church, Sunday Ola Makinde; Anambra State Governor,
Mr. Peter Obi; Senator Ike Nwachukwu, former military governor of Imo State and Chief Gabriel Onyendilefu, Accountant General of Abia State. Indigenes of Item to be honoured at the event, which holds at Central School, Amaokwe Item, are: Chief (Dr.) Bill Chukwu Oteh, a businessman; Chief Sydney Dike, businessman; Mr. Nicholas Chibiko Mba, former surveyor general of Abia State; Sir Benjamin Okoji Okpo, retired permanent secretary in Abia State and the late Dr. Nwokocha Ijioma. Also to be honoured are: the late Elder Osoka Imo, retired chief pharmacist, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); Elder I. B. Osoka, former president general of Item Union, L
agos; Victoria Oluchi Ogwo, international handball star; Lady Comfort O. Maduka; Chief Onwukwe O. Onwukwe, former vice president of Item Development Association; Dr. Godwill Eme Okoro; Dr. Livingstone Eke; Dr. Anele Agu; Dr. Ogbonnaya Iheuko and Mrs. Love Maduka Joshua. Expected at the event, apart from those to be honoured are: Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Amaefula Orji a well as the three senators representing Abia State, Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Uche Chukwumerije and Ngozi Nworgu. Item Day is a forum evolved by Item Development Association for members of the community to take stock of their achievements, identify their challenges and proffer solutions and plan for the New Year. Also, the event is an avenue for the community to thank God for his blessings in the outgoing year. “We also use this auspicious occasion to honour our illustrious sons, daughters, friends and well wishers that have rendered selfless service to Item Homeland in particular and Nigeria as a whole,” they said.
