… ‘Yaya Toure my brother’
By GBOLAHAN DADA
Didier Drogba has sensationally said that the African Footballer of the Year Award won for the second time by his fellow national teammate, Yaya Toure, has shown that indeed, his country, Cote d’Ivoire, is on top of the continent’s football. Drogba, who many thought would be dejected for emerging runner-up during the Award presentation, said he’s the happiest person on earth because the top award in football had just been won by his brother. He said he nurtured no hard feeling at all.
“I’m excited that Yaya Toure won this award. You can see it is not easy to contest with the quality of great footballers in the world for this title. Yaya Toure is a player I respect much and Alexander Song is another player that is making waves with FC Barcelona in Spain. These players are great influence in both their clubs and countries. I’m proud to be among the best three in Africa. It is a great honour for me and my country, especially that two players are in the front roll of honours in the continent.
This is a victory for Cote dIvoire and I’m highly overwhelmed,” Drogba told journalists at the Awards ceremony. To the Chelsea’s former player, the Glo-CAF Award would undoubtedly play a significant role in Cote d’Ivoire preparation for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations outing.
According to him, the entire Elephants team now has a task. The commitment is all about winning the tournament and they will try their best to make history in South Africa. The striker of Shanhua Shenhua FC of China said Cote d’Ivoire had a great chance to make good impression at the tournament in spite of the presence of tough teams such as Nigeria, defending champion, Zambia and Ghana.
“As other countries, we have the players and we are hopeful about our chances. We would not underrate any team”. We would give it our best.
