Nigeria’s Flying Eagles yesterday crashed out of the FIFA U-20 World Cup holding in Turkey after losing 2-1 to the Uruguay U-20 national team.
The John Obuh-tutored side, playing its best game at the tournament, had to play with 10 men for more than 50 minutes after Abdullahi Shehu was red-carded for fouling Uruguay’s Diego Laxalt inside Nigeria’s half.
Nicolas Lopez put the South American side in front in the 66th minute after goalkeeper Samuel Okani failed to deal with a free kick close to Nigeria’s vital area. Olarewaju Kayode brought Nigeria back on level terms in the 69th minute from an individual brilliance when he collected the ball from the centre of the field, outwitted five players of Uruguay before firing home.
Lopez finally sealed victory for Uruguay from the spot kick after Onyinye Ndidi fouled Rolan inside Nigeria’s box. Yesterday’s loss to Uruguay was the second in less than two weeks after the Super Eagles lost to the South American nation at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil by the same margin.
