It was a colourful, all-inclusive pageantry intended to grab and sustain the attention of the motorists, pedestrians and other road users in Lagos, to the up-to-date line-up of Kia vehicles available in the country through Dana Motors Limited. And the ‘trick’ worked, for not only did the bevy of cars – all 2012 models – cause a stir every now and then as it made its way through the traffic on Ajah-Lekki Expressway, last Saturday, it was also a veritable opportunity for a section of the auto press to get acquainted with the products.
From the compact and familiar Picanto and Rio, to the vastly improved Cerato, Optima and the all-new Cadenza, as well as the breath-taking Sportage, which shares attention with the flagship Mohave in the SUV segment, the convoy was spectacular from every angle, and all the way. Particularly impressive was the new Optima, which this writer had the opportunity of befriending from the take-off point at the Peninsula Resort, all the way through some 20 kilometres along the Lekki Expressway.
But grabbing more attention most of the time were the aesthetically eloquent Sportage and the not-too-familiar Cadenza. Beyond the obvious exterior make-over, including the aerodynamic face featuring the new grille and modern headlamps, the fuel efficient DOS engine beneath the bonnet of the Optima, gave a good account of itself in terms of take-off, speed driving and even when in the slow traffic that is not uncommon on that road.
It is driven by a 2.0 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission gear (with Eco-drive). With the improved legroom, more functions now performed on the steering wheel, 60/40 split folding leather seat and separate A/C control for rear passengers, the Optima interior ambience combines with the sportier exterior to take the mid-size sedan to a higher level.
Complementing this is the 17-inch alloy wheel. Like the Optima, the 2012 Sportage now flaunts aesthetic features that make the SUV very seductive and clearly one of the most visible new vehicles on the roads today. A 2.0 litre Kia with dual airbags (for driver and front passenger), Sportage also has an active headrest, tilt power steering and 60/40 folding rear seat.
Earlier while welcoming the participating journalists, the Chief Commercial Officer of Dana Motors Limited, Mr. Sandeep Malhotra, reiterated his company’s commitment to Kia, especially in the area of making the necessary investments to ensure satisfaction to the customers through efficient after-sales back-up based on brand’s ‘Family-like Care’ service philosophy.
