Last Thursday at the Hall 1, LTV 8, Ikeja, Lagos State, Wurola Nelson defeated four other contestants to win this year’s edition of the Drama Personality of the Year competition. Wemimo Ohunerie, Favour Martins, Damilola Aiyemuro and Chioma Grant, came second, third, fourth and fifth runners up respectively.
The competition was organized by the Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy which saw the contestants perform dance drama, Bali and dramatic monologue. In her welcome address, Mrs Adeola Badru Nigerian director, said Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy is the only organization in Africa that was founded in 1979 in Australia when Helen O’ Grady, a trained teacher, drama teacher and actress, hired a hall and commenced drama classes after school hours for young people between the ages of 5-18. She said “ the Academy provides a self-development drama programme which makes the child to have enthusiasm, energy and a positive approach to life.
It also makes children to have self-esteem, skill in verbal communication, effective social interaction and performance skills. African Director of Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, Duncan Rice said children are taught how to speak well and communicate effectively even after their graduation from school. Guests that graced the occasion include Wale Odunowo, a representative from Lagos State Government, Mrs Joke Muyiwa, Mr Abiodun Yinka (a.k.a Papa Ajasco), Mrs Sarah Bolous among others.
