From Charles Adegbite, Ado-Ekiti
The Ekiti State Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Chief Olajide Awe has been moved to Abuja. He was whisked away at about 5am yesterday by the Police on the order of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar over his alleged involvement in the Erijinyan-Ekiti killing of last Saturday.
He was moved from the Ekiti State Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police to its headquarters in Abuja for questioning according to reliable sources from the ACN office in Ado-Ekiti. While the ACN source claimed that he was not detained till yesterday at the Ekiti Command headquarters, in Ado-Ekiti, another source told Daily Sun that the ACN boss was actually detained till yesterday morning before he was ordered to be brought to the police headquarters in Abuja by the IGP. Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said Awe was invited on Tuesday and was allowed to go after interrogation.
Babayemi stated that he could not confirm whether the ACN Chairman was invited by the Force Headquarters in Abuja. “Chief Jide Awe is a Nigerian and I think if Abuja has something to confirm from him, he can be invited,” the PPRO said. Awe was accused by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of allegedly master-minding the killing of one Ayodele Jeje and sporadic shooting of two others who were now in critical condition in hospital. He had earlier been summoned by the Commissioner of Police, Sontonye Wakama, on Tuesday where he was quizzed by the police over his alleged connection with the murder.
Some suspected gun-wielding members of the ACN were said to have invaded the community at about 10.30pm last Saturday and shot some members of the PDP, including Jeje, who were planning to defect to PDP the second day. But the Publicity Secretary of the ACN in the State, Prince Tunde Adeleke, confirmed that Awe was invited to Abuja by the police for fact-finding.
Adeleke maintained that, “Awe is not a criminal and no case has been established against him. So why must he be detained by the police? There is no iota of truth in the rumour that Awe was detained before taken to Abuja. “It was true that our Chairman was invited to Abuja and the invitation was just for fact-finding over the Erinjiyan issue. He was neither arrested nor harassed as being peddled around by the PDP. The invitation is normal under this circumstance”, ACN said.
