Yakowa: Chopper crash: No compensation for victims

By UCHE USIM

As Nigerians mourn the death of former Kaduna State governor, Patrick Yakowa and former national security adviser (NSA), Andrew Azazi, an aviation expert and retired Air Force officer, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (retd) has said they will not be paid any form of compensation.

This was unlike the $100,000 paid families of air crash victims in civil aviation. In a telephone interview with Daily Sun, Ojikutu said: “Anyone who boards a military aircraft knows it’s just another good ride.

The aircraft is strictly for military operations/training and not for commercial. It does not carry insurance for non-military functions. Who do you expect to pay compensation? Is the Defence Ministry or the Navy? It’s an unfortunate accident but they are not entitled to any compensation.

It’s not offering commercial service which the civil aviation aircraft are insured for,” he said. Ojikutu further said the issue of compensation had been a major problem in civil aviation as most airlines were yet to pay families of victims the full compensation. “You are talking about compensation, has Dana, Sosoliso, ADC and others paid the full $100,000 as stipulated by ICAO?” he said.

No amount of compensation can assuage the families of the victims. Afterall each of the victims has what his family can fall back on.

It is true that no amount of compensation will bring back the dead, but the family should sue the Navy for gross negligence and Oronto Douglas is liable for the insurance of the transportation he provided on the day of his father’s funeral.

Wait a minute, is this equally applicable to the two Pilots? Hope their families will be compensated because they died in active service. They would not have said NO to their superiors who gave the instruction to fly the V.I.P.s. I read one article yesterday where two Pilots who refused to fly due to poor weather condition were grounded. So these two Pilots’ families should be compensated even though no amount of money will bring them back.

The federal government must pay compensation it’s wrong to say that compensation on military aircraft is meanth to cover kaki people only what about the civilian workers in the military if per adventure they board a military aircraft and accident occur what then ll be the faith of their beloved families so that policy must change forthwith .
