Presidency wades into police, SSS rift

From CHUKS AKUNNA, Abuja

The Presidency has begun moves to resolve a growing rivalry between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the State Security Service (SSS), Daily Sun has learnt. A top official of government who did not want his name in print disclosed at the weekend that the Presidency was worried about the rivalry between both agencies and the security implications for the country.

The official listed the controversial escape and re-arrest of suspected terrorist, Kabiru Sokoto and the murder of Olaitan Oyerinde, private secretary to Edo State governor, as two events that had fuelled mistrust between the police and SSS. Last week, the House of Representatives summoned the SSS Director General, Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, on how his men paraded a set of suspects different from the ones earlier paraded by the police in Oyerinde’s murder investigations.

“The role of the SSS is intelligence gathering on national security issues and protection of VIPs. The protection of life and property, as well as the prosecution of those who have violated life and property is the duty of the police,” the official said. “Yes, the SSS as a responsible security agency can arrest anybody suspected to have committed murder. But such suspects have to be handed over to the police for prosecution. Parading the suspects before handing them over to the police was wrong,” submitted the official.

He added: “The greater worry is a report that the SSS handed the suspects over to the police without their case files. This is a very serious issue that we are trying to resolve. “Both security agencies report to two retired senior military officers. Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade is the minister of Police Affairs. SSS reports directly to Dasuki Sambo, a retired colonel and National Security Adviser (NSA).”

Apart from both being commissioned in 1974, Dasuki and Olubolade clinched key political appointments while in military service. Dasuki served as ADC to the then military president General Ibrahim Babangida. On his part, Olubolade served as the military governor of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Bayelsa State.

Hey! So most of offencive story against the Nigeria police is false. The SSS are really eye service people. But come to think of it, this is absolute wickedness against the police. It is very bad mr SSS.

  8. bernard February 18, 2013 at 6:54 am - Reply

But who is to blame here ? When SSS arrest and give to police, the police will rubbish the effort by conniving and letting d suspect escape. It is the in competency of the police that makes the SSS almost take over their duties.QED

@fitex l know you must be an oversealious SSS officer, that is why you term the advice given to you as foolish and labeling your advisers as illitrates but whatever you take it to be, know the TRUTH because only the truth that can set you free. No gain from wickedness.

SSS will arrest and hand over to police and police will collect money from the suspects set them free and parade the innocent once. Who is fooling who?

    • Emma February 18, 2013 at 7:56 am - Reply

@ Robinson, dss are also known as secret police, they are not suppose 2 make dia identity known 2 d public, talkless of arrest ,they are suppose 2 be operating in secret by giving or security operatives informations in secret not going about arresting, investigating & even going out 4 some millitry operations by nature.dat is not part of dia work

      • Badoo February 18, 2013 at 8:55 am - Reply

I think what you people need is enlightenment, you do not know the duties of the SSS .It is not all operations that are covert, some are open, like the VIP protection, all over the world body guards are seen around their principals, not hidden.Besides, the SSS job also involves security enforcement, not just intelligence gathering.CIA and FBI does more operations than the sheriff, all these talk abouts should only be heard not seen,is anachronistic it is not mordern day security, intelligence operations.Who do you in all sincerity blame, suspects were arrested with overwhelming evidence handed over to the police, and they out of ego refused to arraign them instead arrested a popular human right activist. In America there is rivalry between agencies, but not bitter, one cooperation and mutual respect, not ego trip.

What is the meaning of illiteracy and how do you identify an illiterate?
You are the only identifiable illiterate, so far, in this forum.
      Please go to school.

The problem between the sss and the police is bad for the government and good for the public because they will start exposing themselves.

The problem is that the Police is so coropt and also incompetent that is why another Agency like sss will not trust them , At the same time they have decided to do there jod for them , and i hope that with this new development the IG will get up to its responsibility to purge out the bad egg from the force especially putting more effort on those high profile investigations like terrorism and kidnapping political murder . infarct i don’ trust our Nigeria Police force especially after the escape of that blood sulking demon called sokoto kabilu

  16. Nwoke February 18, 2013 at 9:07 am - Reply

Nigerian Police has failed in every responsibility that is within their jurisdiction. If SSS should depend on the Police to achieve any feat, then they are doomed. If anything you are doing in life have to pass through Nigerian Police then forget it. You can never achieve result.

I am baffled to ask what this forum was meant for in the first place?

The problem in every fiber of the Nigeria economy is corruption. It is generated from the top to the buttom. I hear Aba say ‘IG will get up to his responsibilities’. What can he possibly do? You think he really is in any control?… Not with the existence of his currupt superiors who single handedly instaled him there to see to the continued norm of currruption and more curruption.
cow no dey born lion from where I come from!

What we should be talking is massive revolution to upturn our currupt Government, and it should start from the top…

I salute every person that had commented. Calling commentators illiterates for whatever reason is not accepted by me.What we need here is for people to comment on issues and get challenged by correcting them or adding value to their comments
In Nigeria, people including me trust SSS more than police . So in any serious case SSS report will be more reliable than one coming from the police .

My fellow citizens the work of sss&police are intermingled, but it is only when u look deep that u will see very thin wall of difference.sss work is a very sensitive intelligent work which the police cannot do all alone. They get accustomed& acclimatised to any place they want to work in,in order to get rudimentary&grassroot informations.when u hear that police effected arrest on a tip off, this is bcs of the informations supplied by sss.police can never work effectively without sss.Rcently Gorvenor Oshiemole openly shaded tears and blamed the police for shoddy work on the murder of his private secretary. He said this b4 the vice president&top security officers in benin.i think it was at a seminar on police re-organization &reformation. The problem is that the police often mess up with the intelligent infos supplied by sss or allow the escape of criminals handed to them by sss through questionable ways. The sss should not be castigated, there is more in their work than the eyes could see, police knows this too well.

Does any Nigerian trust the Police to do the right thing? The answer is No. So if no Niger

  23. danbaba February 18, 2013 at 1:09 pm - Reply

The best the federal government should do is to over haul the security organization to call NSO which will reflect the nation identity because SSS is only to operate at state level which is short coming of nation with population of 150m people.Information togethering or 3s is not adequate at state level thats crime is becoming daily increase @ high rate due to complication of assignment of both agencies(i.e.SSS & police). Please this is sample advise to curb crime in nigeria(i.e. NSO should check all org. thenthe rate of crime will be low if there is check & balance not matter how higher u are placed)

  24. BONNY February 18, 2013 at 1:44 pm - Reply

@danbaba,their name was nigerian security organisation but changed bcs of nigerian standard organistion, both bear the acronym nso.Their work covers the entire nigerian state&not limited to our local states from what i understood from ur write up above.

The constitution of Nigeria confers the Police with every powers that concerns the internal security. The police even have the constitutional right to arrest an SSS, Military, NSCDC etc officer when found wanton. I blame their inspector General for not calling the Director of the SSS to order. The official even stated their area of operation, why not stop there? The authorities should do something about it, especially when the SSS has no uniforms, they could easily be killed by our policemen on flimsy ground. Before you know it now, the Junior officers will begin to display their insanity oo. Police can fire anyhow

all i can say in all is that Nigeria police is the worst police force on earth……if you ever put your trust in them, you are gone forever…let Nigeria change the name of our police force, change there uniform from black to blue, destroy all the mami market around there barracks, and pass a law that will jail any police man or woman caught drinking ogogoro and smoking indian hemp, then i think they will think like human beings…
