Pre-Xmas tragedy: 4 drown in Anambra river

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

Four persons were yesterday reported drowned when a local canoe capsized in Omanbala River, Umueze Anam, Anambra West Local government Area of Anambra State. Daily Sun gathered that the incident occurred when the canoe lost its grip in the middle of Omanbala River, resulting in the tragedy in which four persons allegedly lost their lives.

Though the state police command through the Police Public Relations Officer, Ralph Uzoigwe said they were yet to be briefed of the incident as at press time, eyewitnesses revealed that the search for the bodies of the deceased was ongoing.

According to Ngozi Ubabuko, a survivor of the accident, the canoe started rumbling right in the middle of the river, adding that those that lost their lives could not swim to safety as she did. “We were going to Anam, for me, I was coming from Lagos and when I got to the river, I saw many ferries and canoes, I boarded the one that was loading and when we got to the middle of the river, there was problem which resulted in the tragedy, those who died could not swim like me, and by the time local divers arrived, they were already drowned.”
