Tragedy befell the border town of Idi Iroko in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday when three members of a family died during a fire which razed six houses, 10 shops . The incident, according to an eye witness, occurred at Ago-Egun area leaving the mother and her two children burnt beyond recognition.

The victims were Mrs. Abosede Amosun as well as her two children, Joseph nine and Sarah seven. Amosun’s last born, Israel, was said to have laid critically ill at an hospital in Idi Iroko where doctors are battling to save his life. The victims were said to be asleep when a fully-loaded petrol tanker fell and spilled its contents which later caught fire in the area. The Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Irunoje David Abiodun, confirmed the incident, noting that the affected tanker belonged to smugglers who were trying to move fuel across the border.

He gave the details of the articulated vehicle as LAGOS AAA 36 XA, Abiodun said: “I think there was a spark from the tanker and then it caught fire, the two children and the mother were burnt beyond recognition’’. According to him, officials of his command went to the scene after a distress call from the residents.

Although he disclosed that men from the fire service were contacted, he regretted that irreparable damage had been done before the fire could be put out. Abiodun further disclosed that the charred remains of the victims had been deposited at the General Hospital, Ipokia,. Meanwhile, those who were injured are still receiving treatment in various hospitals in the town.
