A white cap chief, Kayode Adeshina, was shot dead yesterday by suspected assassins at the Iga Iduganran on the Lagos Island. The man known by the title of Onimole of Lagos was shot dead by two gunmen at about 3.00am. Daily Sun reliably gathered that the gunmen scaled the fence in his compound, shot the chief and locked him up in his room.
A man simply identified as Oyindamola told Daily Sun that he slept in a room beside that of Onimole. The man said it was the sound of the gunshot of the suspected assassins that woke him up. Oyindamola said when he woke up he decided to find out what the problem was only to be accosted by two gunmen who had earlier left but were coming back to confirm whether Chief Adeshina had died or would survive the gunshot. A senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Daily Sun that the police visited the scene and had deposited the corpse in a public mortuary.
He said the force was suspecting assassination, as the gunmen did not rob residents except that they took away the deceased’s handset. The police source said further that if the gunmen were just armed robbers, they would have fled the scene after the shooting. “But in that instance, after shooting the man, they still waited in the premises to confirm whether he finally died or would survive the attack.”
He noted that the assassins, after confirming that the man had died, searched his house, took some clothes and locked him inside the house. “When the people around tried to rush him to the hospital, they had to break the door to gain access. Which armed robber would waste the whole time and bullet for just a Blackberry phone?” Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the report said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, had ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti to take over the case. She said the police would soon unmask those behind the dastardly act.
