Notable personalities from within and outside Nigeria will converge on the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja this morning, as the former President of Ghana, Mr. John Kufour, delivers the 10th Anniversary Lecture of The Sun Publishing Limited. Already, Kufour has arrived Abuja, the nation’s capital, for the event scheduled to commence at 10.am.
He will speak on the topic, Religion, Strife and the Future of Democracy in Africa. Mr. Kufour had, in a letter of acceptance and confirmation addressed to Mr. Tony Onyima, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, asserted that he was “happy to be associated with the noble goals of your esteemed publication (The Sun) which has added to the rich and diverse media landscape of Nigeria.” Senate President David Mark will chair the event, a major highpoint of events commemorating the 10th anniversary of The Sun, publishers of Daily Sun, Sunday Sun, Saturday Sun and Soccer Star.
Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, will serve as the Guest of Honour while the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar 111, is the Royal Father of the Day. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, is expected as Chief Host. Activities commemorating the 10th anniversary of The Sun, publishers of the highest selling newspapers in Nigeria, commenced last Thursday with a courtesy call on Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu of Lagos. A Jumat service was held last Friday at the Alausa Secretariat Central Mosque, Ikeja, Lagos.
On Saturday, The Sun Management Football team thrashed Nollywood Stars in a novelty match played at the National Stadium, Surulere. The match ended 4-3. On Sunday, an interdenominational thanksgiving service was held at the Chapel of Christ The Light, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, where the presiding chaplain, Revd David Kolade Verralls, implored Nigerians to embrace a godly life. The programme would be rounded off on Saturday night with The Sun Awards scheduled for Eko Hotel and Suites.
