Kidnapping: Okorocha to seize monarchs’ salaries

From VAL OKARA, Owerri

Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has threatened to withhold the salary of any traditional ruler in whose community kidnappers are apprehended. He directed the monarchs to assume full responsibility of the security arrangement in their Community Government Council (aka fourth tier government) in their respective domains to enable them to assist the government flush out all criminals in the state.

The governor who gave the directive while launching the “Imo Security Network and Emergency Services” in Owerri promised to dish out an undisclosed ransom to any individual who supplies useful information to security agencies on the hideout of kidnappers and den of robbers in the state. Kidnapping does not occur in the moon but in our midst and it is a crime against God and humanity and henceforth anybody found guilty of it will be dealt with according to the law,” he warned.

He explained that the New State Security Network launched, was not meant to witch hunt anybody, but a strategy to complement the efforts of security agencies in crime control and prevention. The government therefore challenged staff of the security out-fit to swing into action immediately and to comb all bushes, forests and uncompleted buildings in all nooks and crannies of the state to fish out criminals still hibernating in the state, promising to equip them properly for the task ahead.

    Your Excellency,
You need to be more decisive. What is withholding of salary? Such Traditional ruler should be deposed and prosecuted. Since the structure of government being run in Imo state has placed embraced the traditional rulers, they should take responsibility of security conditions in their domain.
These bad people must not be allowed to spoil Imo state for us.

@ Pascal Chimezie, men you have electronic brain; you read without understanding. Are you saying that since the Governor himself is the chief security officer in the state, whenever a kidnapper is cought, he should be impeached? Tha a criminal is cought with the domain of a traditional ruler does not hold the ruler cupable. The Governor knows what he meant when he said that. But on the other way round, how are we sure you are not one of the kidnappers cos the way you are so anxious about it sounds like you deceiving the time by playing along! whoaa!

This is a well come development in Imo State. The issue of kidnapping has become a canker worm in the State in particular and Southern part of Nigeria in general. Imo State government should go further than that, hence one can not feel save back home. This sinister ‘KIDNAPPING” has caused a great pain to most families in Imo State, as it has led to so many losing their lives as well their hard earned resources. Many enterprising investors who opt not to invest in the State due to the activities of criminals are enormous. We can not afford to lose such opportunities as it is rubbing the State a lot of fortune. I am very optimistic that if the State Governor Chief Rochas Okorocha can go hard on these bandits, i believe Imo will be a better place to recorn with.

My dear governor, you are the head of the whole securities in the state, and everyone is working based on your guideline, so whenever one is kidnapped, you will be the one to be questioned because you are the chief security officer. So don’t extend your blame to ordinary traditional rulers who are just community heads…you will be the one to dance every music concerning kidnapping and other immoral acts in the state…so shine your eyes and do your work very perfectly .

i want to believe that the Governor has put certain things inn places before issuing his instruction to the traditional rulers. this is important because “anaghi agba aka ejde ihe nata aru” what i mean is that the Governor should make sure there are enough security arrangements to help these traditional rulers, and other logistics too. i dont know how independent the fourth tier govt is but please let everything be in place and i know the kidnappers will be eradicated. if Lagos state government are combating crime the way they are doing , i believe IMO state will do better. good luck to you all

However, the Governor is trying to charge the traditional rulers to be more proactive in the war against kidnappers. But the governor should be aware that some of the traditional rulers have share in the nefarious business, so seizing there salary is not an enough punishment.

I HAVE ALWAYS ADVISEDNTHE GOVERNOR THAT THERE ARE MANY 419 EZES AND 420 NZES IN IMO STATE. SOME OF THESE EZES ARE THE SPONSORS OF KIDNAPPERS. IF YOU CEIZE THE SALARY BOF AN EZE WHO HAD AMASSED A LOT OF MONEY FROM KIDNAPPING, IT WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING. THE BEST WAY IS TO DETHRONE ANY EZE IN WHOSE DOMAJN KIDNAPPING TAKES PLACE. I AM SURE THE GOVERNOR KNOWS THAT SOME OF THE EZES ARE KIDNAPPERS AND OR SPONSORS. IT MUST BE TOLD THAT PEOPLE (THE OPPOSITION)WANT TO RUBBISH THEN GOVERNORS ADMINISTRATION IN ORDER TO CHARGE HIM OF INCOMPETENCE. DO SOMETHING MORE DRASTIC TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE IN CHARGE. LET THERE BE NO MORE KIDNAPPING AND ARMED ROBBERY IN THE STATE TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR FOREIGN INVESTMENT AND FOR YOUR PEOPLE WHO ARE ABROAD TO VISIT HOME. I MARRIED FROM IMO STATE AND I LOVE THE PEOPLE. MY INLAW GOVERNOR ROCHAS OWELLE OKOROCHA, MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO COME AN VISIT MY INLAWS WITHOUT FEARS. THANK YOU GOVERNOR.

My attention has been drawn to the so-called withholding of salaries of the traditional rulers. Honestly, it will be a welcome development if Rochas wants to device an obtainable strategy to fight social vices and crime. But I must observe without any fear of contradiction that the Governor is an extremist. Why should he threaten to withhold their salaries? What if the kidnappers are caught dwelling in Govt House. Will he refuse to take his salary for the month? No he wount. He will only bring the offenders to book. In same manner, He can only withhold the salary of an Eze only if after the apprehension of kidnappers in his territory an Eze was was found wanting in delivering his duties as regards security, not just because the kidnapping activity was carried out in his community. That would be arbitrary. Lest I forget, someone should also tell the Governor the difference between scholarship and free education. Some wise individuals are getting tired of his politics of self exaltation to the detriment of public interest and exaggerating promises tantamount to lies. Maybe he can explain the general public why the Eze’s has not gotten the cheques meant for the scholarship project, he publicized as if he has already issued it out before announcement. Or is he playing with our intelligence? I wonder.

I can boldly say that governor Okorocha is the man of the people. However withholding their salaries is not enough. Most so called traditional rulers are fraudsters. The are sponsors of kidnappers. They should rather be deposed iif a kidnapper is found in their domain.

    My Governor,
Pls. note that we do not have Monarchs or Monarchical system of communal rulership in most Imo State Communities from creation.
Most of our communities were ruled by whoever was deemed fit (usually those that lead there people in wars and give wise opinions when there is “national call”. In my town, as from history, such a person is given the “ozo-ama” title which makes him the Chief of the town. When he passes to meet his fathers, the community assembles, and selects any of their son that can ably lead them according to the dictates of the time.
When the Europians came, these group of leaders were dificult to crack (bend to dance to their tunes) and the colonial masters selected their men “loyalists” and crowned them chiefs.
Some of these new generation chiefs trained their children overseas, and they came back to mutilate our culture with kings and queens type of rullership. Some went to the extent of arrogating the names of their communities to their father’s ancestral names.
As you are fully aware, many communities in Imo State “pulled down” most of these self-aclaimed aristocrats after the civil war and the wounds caused are not yet properly healed.
It is therefore my humble contribution that you ensure that Community Chiefs are not given government certificates that make them Monarchs in communities that do not have such. Many lives have been lost in the past because of this and will continue if this mistake is not immediately corrected (assuming it is already done). On kidnapping, the only lesson they will learn is to dethrone them and send them to prison, if and when they are involved/connected.

Having their pay seized is nothing to these monarch. I can boldly tell you that 99% of these Traditional Rulers are fully connected with these kidnappers, in fact these so called monarch or traditional rulers are the real kidnappers. Go to the villages, you’ll see these Traditional Rulers and their chiefs drinking and eating pepper soap goat meat with these nuisances till midnight. The traditional rulers knows all the bad gangs in their communities, so government should hold them responsible for any robbery, kidnapping, and other evil activities in their domain. The best punishment for them is to dethrone them and hang them.
