Horror in Indonesia: 21 Nigerians on death row

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

Shocking revelations from Jarkata, the capital of Indonesia revealed that over 21 Nigerians are facing death sentences while 31 are serving various jail terms in different prisons in that country for various offences including drug peddling. Sunday Sun gathered that out of the 21 condemned Nigerians, two of them, Samuel Iwuchukwu Okoye and Hassan Anthony Nwaolisa, were executed on June 28, 2008, while one Augustine Ogbonna died under mysterious circumstance in prison custody in September, 2008.

However, the shocking revelation from the L.P Kembang Kuning prisons and other prisons in the country as revealed by a human rights lawyer based in Onitsha, Mr. Melly Eze showed that 10 Nigerians who were among the 21 prisoners earlier sentenced to death by the Indonesia court in 2008, would be executed this week if the threat from the prisons authority is anything to go by. Mr. Eze in the petition titled: “Shocking Revelation From Indonesia Prisons: Execution Of 18 Nigerians Scheduled For Between June and August, 2010”, stated that there was fresh threat to execute the prisoners on death row anytime from now if no further diplomatic efforts and pressure were mounted on the Indonesian authorities.

“I have it on good and reliable authority that officials of Indonesian government who opened discussions with the Nigerian delegation are now expressing disappointment over an apparent display of lack of seriousness on the part of Nigerian government over the diplomatic move already initiated by Nigerian government officials.”  The human rights lawyer recalled that his earlier petition to the Presidency, the National Assembly and the Foreign Affairs Ministry in October, 2008 in respect of the 21 Nigerians on death row and others serving various jail terms in Indonesia attracted reactions from Senator Uche Chukwumerije who moved a motion on the floor of the Senate concerning the matter.

He said that his earlier petition had attracted the attention of the then Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, who led a high- powered delegation to Indonesia to mediate on behalf of the convicts and 50 other prisoners serving various jail terms in Indonesia. “The Senate President, David Mark, wrote me personally promising that the issue would be addressed, just as Dabiri-Erewa granted a press interview where she assured Nigerians that the government was committed to doing everything possible to address the plight of those Nigerians.

So also did Senator Uche Chukwumerije,” he said. “Four years after the delegation to Indonesia and assurances of mediating for the troubled Nigerians, the federal government may not have taken any further steps to get reprieve for the Nigerians. The visit of Indonesian President, Mr. Suuilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Nigeria today (Saturday) is the best opportunity for President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to fulfill their promises to get relief for the troubled Nigerians,” the lawyer stated.

The Senate President, David Mark in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Agbo Ogah, dated November 7, 2008, had thanked the human rights lawyer for drawing the attention of the senate and indeed, Nigerians to the ugly situation faced by Nigerians in Indonesia and promised to do his best to that effect after referring the matter to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Senator Uche Chukwu-merije also in his letter dated November 13, 2008, also said: “In order to get a clearer picture of the ordeal of these Nigerians, I sought for first hand information via telephone text messages from some of the victims in Indonesia.

Following the Senate summon of the Minister, he led a high-powered delegation to Indonesia where the team interceded with Indonesian authority and returned with strong hope of a change of heart in Jarkata.” Meanwhile, there are fresh fears that some of the Nigerians earlier sentenced to death by the Indonesian court in 2008 may be among the 10 prisoners to be executed any moment from now as stated on the Internet. It was also gathered that the victims were being kept in various prisons in Nusakambagan Island including L.P Kembang Kuning, L.P Batu, L. P Besi, L.P Pasir Putth, L.P Permisian, L.P Markoba,  Bandung, Bali and Medan all located  in the city of Jarkata.

Some commentators and contributors here suffer from two avoidable and curable diseases and as such spread it and infected unsuspecting public. The two curable diseases i mentioned here are tribalism and ignorance of the real situation here in Jakarta Indonesia.

While I agree with the unending army of contributors here who enjoined Indonesia govt to go ahead and execute the condemned Nigerians on the grand that the law of the land must take its course. I totally disagree that all those accused committed or guilty of the crimes preferred against them.
Some of this people are first time travelers and fell prey to the lurking eyes of drug peddlers at our airports back home, who most times smuggle in this hard drugs into their open luggage without owners knowledge. Some of them were caught sitting or drinking with drug peddlers in night clubs and once police raids and caught them same fate awaits them with the drug peddlers
This country have always shown blind eyes to such occasions. One becomes a victim and condemned criminal simply because he fraternized with his fellow black man or Nigerian. I am not saying all of them are innocent far from that but our government should make sure our citizens have access to fair hearing and consulate services when the need arises.

Come to think of it,this laws are designed to discriminate between blacks and Asians. When Asians are caught with drugs here they are deported back to their respective countries while blacks face death or long term sentences varying from death to endless years in prisons.

So,I think that those condemning this guys outright should have a rethink and urge our government to apply solid diplomacy to ease the plight of the helpless Nigerians. Those thinking that this prisoners belongs to one tribe should also learn that I have first class information as a resident in Jakarta and every big tribe in Nigeria has their share of the prisoners.

That is the problem with nigerian ‘sentiments’; ‘favoritism’ etc
if my brother, son, sister or any relation will commit a crime that calls for capital punishment, i ask the judge to sentence him and permit me to execute him. the crimes committed in one way or the other affects some ones family. what will you say to the affected family?

Nigeria is a fail country and did not care for their citizen outside Nigeria……. All Nigeria Embassies and their Ambassadors in Asian Countries and some part of European Countries are not doing their Jobs….,,,,,, THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS AND AM WRITING THIS TO MY FELLOW NIGERIANS BACK IN NIGERIA WITH TEARS TO LET THE NIGERIA GOVERNMENT KNOW THAT ALL NIGERIANS IN INDIA ARE PLANNING TO DESTROY NIGERIA EMBASSY IN NEW DELHI INDIA…….. I also want to use this opportunity to inform my fellow Nigerians that Indian Police and their fellow Citizens are Killing Nigerians and dumping them in Train Station almost every month……. Two Days back, A Nigeria was killed by India police and dumped in Train Station in Mumbai City India and Nigeria Embassy in New Delhi India is doing nothing about that….. Police always visit Nigerians in their house harassing them and making away with the valued properties and cash with a note that they will kill them if they talk and Nigeria Government will not do anything or come for their Help……………In 2008 during the Terrorist Attack in Three 7 Star Hotels and Railway Station in Mumbai city India…..It was flash on TV as a Breaking News that Nigerian Drug Dealer are shooting guns in Mumbai and after they noticed that it was a terrorist attack by Pakistan Terrorist and Nigeria Government and our Embassy did not do anything about it……. Two weeks ago a group of Police went to all Nigerians houses living in Kalina, Mumbai City India and carry more then 28 people to Police Station and after release them with the help of other Nigerians as we stationed ourselves in police station and the police people make it clearly that they did not found anything in those Nigeria guys houses….. But it was a surprise to read on News Paper the following day that 38 Nigerians was arrested with drug and charge to court and we reported the matter to our Embassy, but they did not do anything about the allegation and bad name leveled against Nigeria and her Citizens in India…………………. Two days ago, A Group of police man told 5 Nigerians that they did not want to see Nigerians or Black people in India again and their citizen and police will continue to kill Nigerians here in India until we leave their country and Nigeria Government will not do anything to them……. … India People have refused to give Nigerians a house to live because their police warn them not to give house to Nigerians and they always send our people packing out of their house within 24 hours without thinking of where the person would take his property to or spend a night because they don’t give our people time or days to get another place to live or take their property to…………………………… Meanwhile, Thousand of Indians are living in Nigeria Comfortably and Nigeria people and some Landlord are serving and respecting them and renting a good house out to them…… but here they refuse to give Nigerians a house, shop or even allow them to have freedom to walk around here in India and do their businesses……India Police have close all Nigeria Restaurant and Shops In Mumbai City and asking them to leave India and go back to Nigeria………… India Citizens always beat Nigerians on the road calling them all kind of names and whenever Nigeria report the matter to police, The police will tell the Nigeria person that those guys are Indians and they have right to beat Nigerians and they can’t do anything to their citizen because of a Nigeria man……………….. Therefore, i use this opportunity to call on my fellow Nigeria back Home to know what Indians are doing to their fellow Nigerians in India and also advise you guys to know how to handle Indians in Nigeria and pay them back because without teaching the India citizen in Nigeria a lesson…. The police and their citizens here in India will continue killing Nigerians here in India without fear knowing that Nigeria Government will not do anything to them……… 90% of Nigerians here has a valid visa, but police did not care neither their fellow citizens and they refuse to rent us a house and always asking us to go back to Nigeria or face death………………… INDIANS ARE WICKED AND HEARTLESS AND THEY HATE NIGERIANS AND THEY KILLED NIGERIANS EVERY MONTH OR WEEKS HERE AND OUR EMBASSY AND GOVERNMENT IS NOT DOING ANYTHING REGARDS TO THAT AND THAT IS THE REASON AM CALLING ON MY FELLOW NIGERIA TO KNOW HOW TO HANDLE INDIANS IN NIGERIA AND PAY THEM BACK WHAT THEY DESERVE AS WICKED AND HATED PEOPLE.

Also knowing that the country you’re in is not condusive for you, there is need for you to relocate to another country. Moreover finding yourself in another nation, you require proper caution, abide by their rules ao laws. But I wonder why Nigerians are so cheap to be tempted in most foreign and civilized countries. Nigerians takes other countries for granted whenever they travel there as if those foreign countries are mumu or doom like us. If these guys are apprehended by the law contrary to that nation, then they should dance their own music squarely.

We should not be sentimental about this ugly situation our citizens is confronted with in Indonesia.
However, we must blame our brothers and sisters who were sentenced to death in Indonesia for self destruction because the laws on drug trafficking and other crimes are there before they went to Indonesia, so why cant they live there without breaking the laws of the land?
I have also lived in many countries from West Africa to Europe without having issues with their police or any other security agents because i would not do anything that will go against their laws, so Indonesian government should not be blamed if they do not listen to the pleas from our clueless government.
We all do things with impunity in Nigeria and many Countries can not tolerate such acts, so all of us must first of all understand the laws of the host countries we live before we embark on any business exploits.
No section of the country should be blamed for criminality in and outside Nigeria because there are criminally minded and sophisticated individuals and groups from all sections of Nigeria.

Those who advise to kill should watch their back, because no one can escape death when you start to judge every Nierian citizen…. I put it to you that all Nigerians where born into sin due to our bad rulers, therefore when you see your fellow man travel out of the country to survive, do not blame him in what ever happens because that is the business he found over there. So whether ibo or non igbo lets pray that the indonesian government should temper justice with mercy. instead of killing, they should be jail.

I pray they lesson to the plea of Nigerian government. But,U all should know that there are two things in this world, which we have paid for one and are still owning for one. That two things are life and death,we have paid for life ,and are owning death as long as U are still living. So death is something awaiting for every living body, which must come when it must come. Some die by accident, sickness, poison and some immediately after birth. The rich dies, and the poor and Poor’s dies too. It doesn’t matter how and when it comes, death is death. so should U support they die,a day is still urs to follow suit, and U don’t know when and how urs will be.

The Igbo wants Biafra for so many cogent reasons. We cannot be good enough in Nigeria try hard as we may. Nigerians themselves see Igbo as the Indians. Take for instance the vomit of one scum of a man who calls himself vegetarian tiger. Assume this man is the president of Nigeria today, what do you think will be his response to your sos message? One of the problem we have here in Nigeria as Igbo is that we have been disorganized so much so that we lack organized means to correct our erring youths. And supposing we are the perfect humans in Nigeria, Nigerians and their government are suffocating us so much so that we cannot demonstrate our perfections because nobody will recognize them. I really sympathise with these condemned criminals in a foreign land. Unfortunately, that country will implement their laws to the letter even if Jonah weeps on the nexk of Indo president till next year! Recall that a young boy was executed in Singapore during Obj regime the very day one Yoruba actress was sentenced to pay N1M by a Lagos court. Baba Suwe melo-drama has come and gone, and we don’t seem to know exactly what took place and what didn’t take place . Our Press is also unhelpful and prove itself as weak, useless and untrustworthy again and again. Talking of 2008 in 2013!
In 9ja, one thief Yusuf admitted he stole N23B and was sentenced to pay N750K! Useless judge claimed there was no regulations (minimum or maximum) on the amount of fine. So, why did he not fine him N50B? If you admit you steal N1K in Indonesia or Singapore and it is proved thus, you’ll be executed. The onle thing that unites Nigerian leaders (Judiciary, Legislature & Executive) is CORRUPTION.
The eventual execution of these Nigerians is a very bad lesson for the condemned criminals but a good lesson for future culprits who feel they can trample upon the laws of other countries. Nigerians can learn and change their ways now. Our sentiments will not change the tide of things or the laws in Indonesia. These so-called human rights activists are becoming mere noise-makers; why are they not even educating we Nigerians on DOs and DONTs. We must all do it together and save lives.

This issue should not be over flogged especially on the basis of tribalistic sentiments.laws are made for order to prevail in any land.ignorant of d law as well is not an excuse.however that is not even d case here.the question to ask is,did the so called nigerians held there really commited the offence they are held for?if d answer is YES,the best we can do is to use our diplomatic mechinary to appeal for amnesty.if that fails,so be it.every body knows that drug peddling is prohibited all over the world with different measures of punishment which varies from country to country.so if any one chose to break the law here or out side the country he should as well face d music whether he or she is Hausa,Yoruba or Igbo.

It is against Indonesan law for any one to carry drug into that Island, who ever does will be killed. Snice those Nigerian jews know this n they still decided willingly to throw away their lives, I say. Let them pay de price of their hunger for money. If Nigerian govt should plead on their behalf, it means our own Nigerian govt is not seriuos about fighting these evil drug traffickers. I trust Indonesan govt, they will not allow anybody or govt to change there law. These nigerian jews drug traffickers must be executed for their crimes. I know Nigerian jews will always try to defend indefensible. Why must Nigerian govt plead gfor them? Are u jews telling me u all don’t know that In Indonesan, de reward of drug trafficking is death. Ibo, Ndigbo, ho I forgot nigerian jews, don’t u have no shame at all. Since de begining of this year, a week as not gone without bad news coming from ur tribe. Well in my post above I tried to narrate what the situation looks like in Indonesia where I live.It is painful that some individuals have grouped themselves to attack and counter attack each other. Even if prophet Muhammed narrated this stories the way I did some tribal attack dogs will either accuse him of sleeping with his mother Aminah bint Wahhab in one of his caves and produced her foster mother
Halimah bint Abi Dhuayb and others just in the name of verbal tribal wars.

Ordinarily, when one hears about murder, it makes one shivers n also show pity on those concern. But the truth is that, they knew fully well before they left for Indonesia that dead penalty awaits anybody who pedles drugs. But greed will not allow them to obey the laws of that land. If truely they involved in those crimes as alleged against them, which the punishment attracts dead as penalty, so be it n if they did’nt i pray that God see them out of their travails.

@Washington..you said In every land there is a law, so if anyone crosses to any land let that person obey the law of that land, if they defile it, let them pay for it…..If at all you’ve crossed boarder before you will know that carrying Nigeria passport or been a black is a problem to these nation especially Asia. They don’t judge someone accordingly. I will explain… Assuming a Nigeria committed a crime they will come to the area that he or she is living to raid and arrest whom ever that is living in that area that is black. secondly in court, they judge them in their language and sentence you without you speaking a word or knowing what they have concluded, after the judge will raise some of his finger that is when you will know how many years you are to serve and that ends it. You dare not talk. If you have any person living in Asia ask him how racist they are…like Martin Luther King said…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by their character…THESE COUNTRIES OF ASIA STILL JUDGE PEOPLE ACCORDING TO THEIR COLORS..And nigeria as a fail state don’t care about their citizens.

It is a good thing Nigerian government this time around is listening to the distressed call from Indonesia. The federal government must intervene because of one reason; to save the innocent ones among them. It is possible that there are some doing legitimate businesses among them and just because they are blacks they were also picked up unjustly. Those must be allowed to access the lawyers of their choice to get fair hearing. If anyone is found guilty of that country’s law he or she must face the law while others not guilty must be set free. By the way, why this mentality of ” I can make it here in Nigeria unless I travel out by all means” by our youths? Though, there is unemployment, but, Nigeria is far better than all these Asia countries. Someone once said Nigeria is the freest country in the world and I think he is right. There are things we take for granted here without anybody troubling you. Let’s put our act together and make Nigeria grate. You don’t have to isolate yourselves and go abroad to tanish Nigeria’s image by pushing hard drugs and fake drugs.

I live in Malaysia, there are many Nigerians in prisons in Malaysia than any other countries in Asia at least 4,000.. Honestly about 90% are in prison because of drugs while 5% because of internet scam 419 the remaining 5% on expired visas. The punishment for drug traffickers in Malaysia and other Asian countries is death penalty. Four days ago eight Nigerians were arrested they shipped in hard drugs from Pakistan. Already cleared at the port and distributed. It was one Nigerian the police arrested at Subang Jaya in Sunway area that led to the arrest of others. The value is about N1 biilion naira, container load of drugs. The following day a Nigerian was arrested at airport he came from Lagos it was showed on TV channel 3 news he hid THE DRUG inside his shoe. The same day seven Nigerians were arrested for duping an Hong Kong lady of RM192,000 Malaysian currency multiply by N50 naira is about N9.5million naira. The stories continues. If you are a law abiding no problem. This is my third year in Malaysia, the government of Malaysia pay for my research expenses have been sponsored to Cambodia before, right now am in Penang the country industrial state attending a conference sponsored by the government. Some Nigerians are being sponsored by the Malaysian government if they know you are serious with our studies. My friend is from Delta State he could not get scholarship from Delta State to pursue his PhD in environmental engineering it was the Petronas Malaysia (equivalent of NNPC) that gave him scholarship with monthly stipends of RM2,000 or N100,000 per month for the next three years! Can NNPC or our government do that. In summary we love money too much and we are lawless and always think we are wiser than other citizens. May God intervene in their situations in Indonesia amen. But we should stop criminality and lawlessness. No countries hate Nigerians but we ourselves, LOVE OF MONEY AND QUICK ONE. The Bible say righteousness exhalted a nation but sin is a reproach to any people Proverbs 14 vs. 34. Nigerians Repent from the main problems
    CORRUPTION AND MAKE MONEY QUICK.

Nigerian should also point to any country that abhor intelligent and intellectuals. There is none but Nigeria. Irregardless of your tribe crime and criminals have no coloration or ethnicity. We are living in Malaysia where Nigerian embassy in Kuala Lumpur gives support to only 419, fraudsters and drug peddlers among us against the intellectuals, legal and serious students and law abiding expertraites in controlling Nigerian in Diaspora Organisation. The trail of the comment shows how we celebrate and support criminals, these set of people that are making our country a living-hell for well meaning.
