Hell let loose in Ibadan

• As landlord shoots tenant •Building razed, vehicle destroyed

From GBENGA ADESUYI, Ibadan

There was confusion at Ire-Akari Street of Olomi area of Ibadan on Sunday following the killing of a resident by a landlord in the area. Tosin Adejumo, 32 was allegedly shot around 9.00pm by a landlord (name witheld) in the area when returning on his motorcycle.

He was said to have gone to drop one of his customers who visited him for a contract. He was allegedly stopped by the landlords who also acted as vigilance group activists in the area and accused him of being an armed robber.

All explanations given by Adejumo fell on deaf ear as the landlord allegedly threatened to kill him, an act which he eventually carried out by shooting him in the chest. Adejumo, according to an eye-witness, was first beaten almost to a state of coma before he fired the gun that snuffed life out of him. “His hand was broken before he was killed.

I was thinking he was not dead before I confirmed that he was dead,” a close friend of Adejumo who did not want his name in print said. Angered by the death of Adejumo, youths in the area mobilized themselves, destroyed the property in the house of the landlord and one Omoniyi who was among the landlord’s team and set the house ablaze.

The landlord was said to have later brought his Volvo car marked Oyo : AT 714 NRA around 2.00am so as to remove the corpse of Adejumo from the spot, but was stopped by the angry youths and the car was destroyed. Mr Timilehin Popoola, who was at the scene of the incident while speaking to Daily Sun said: “Even if they feel he was an armed robber, do they have any right to kill him.

“I was there and we were pleading with them to release him and let him go, but the landlord, in his usual character did not agree with our plea.We later discovered that the N55,000 his customer brought as part-payment for the job has been removed”. Another witness, Mrs Kehinde Tewogbade also confirmed the incident, saying: “I told him that Adejumo was not an armed robber, but had his aluminium job. He was a friend to my son, I explained to them but they did agree.”

When Daily Sun visited the scene, the lifeless body of Adejumo was still there as blood stains littered the ground. Efforts to speak with the Public Relations Officer of the state police command on the incident proved abortive as the telephone line was not available

RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AND FIRST DEGREE MURDER. PROPER LAW APPLICATION SHOULD BE FOLLOWED.
NO ONE SHOULD TAKE THE LAW INTO THEIR HANDS.THERE COULD BE MORE REASONS BEHIND THIS THAT ARE NOT MENTIONED, IF PEOPLE TOLD THE LANDLORD OF THE DECEAD IDENTITY.

That land lord must be handed a death sentence for committing murder against mr Adejumo. Even if the young man happens to be an armed robber, at what point has the land lord being given the right to discharge summary execution? Pls the land lord has no right to leave among humans despict several please from people around the scene, he is devil incarnate.

What in God’s name is this country turning into? when did landlords become vigilante group? there is nothing we cannot wake up and hear in this country. We really need God’s intervention. This is becoming too much the extent of killings, wasting of innocent bloods in our street everyday. But what gives me concern is we don’t have Justice in this country, by tomorrow you will hear that the so called killer landlord is free, because his lawyer maybe SAN and will argue this case to free the killer landlord. what else do i say may his soul rest in peace and the family to take heart.
