Fulani herdsmen rape newly wed in Ogun

• Community leaders raise alarm

By Moshood Adebayo, Abeokuta

A septuagenarian yesterday revealed how a newly wedded lady in Asa Village, in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, (name withheld) was allegedly raped by armed nomadic Fulani herdsmen who were currently terrorizing more than 30 communities in the Council Area. Pa Mathew Olukogun who spoke with journalists during a press conference at Ojo-Odan, lamented what he described as “unabated gruesome killing of Ketu people by the Fulani/Boboro herdsmen in recent times”.

Aside from rape, assault and molestation of the rural dwellers, Olukogun said fears of being attacked by the herdsmen had gripped the villagers who were appealing to the state government to come to their aid. According to the aged man who spoke on behalf of hundreds of farmers in the area, the immoral acts by the normal Fulani had instilled fears into the communities. His words: “Aside from this immoral act by the intruders, many of our sons and daughters have been gruesomely murdered in a way that appears as if we don’t have government.

Our brilliant ones including our wives have been raped, assaulted and even killed by the strangers.” He said many of their wives and ladies that had been raped were either on their way to the market or river to fetch water. “How would you feel if I mention your wife’s name as one of those that have been raped by the cattlerearers’’,, the old man replied in an answer to a question on the need for him to mention names. Olukogun said those who had been raped by the marauders knew themselves. “Many of our wives , ladies and daughter who have been raped were largely taken to the hospital in Abeokuta, the state capital.

“We are losing people as well as being prevented from doing what we know how to do best because of the grazing of our farms by the herdsmen’s cattle’’. ‘’With the terrible experience of the raping of our daughters and ones, including newly wedded wives, living in our communities is no longer safe, hence, we have deserted the communities in hundreds, praying that the state government would urgently come to our aid.’’ According to him, the herdsmen usually lurk around the communities and unleash terror on them in such a way that they are usually helpless.

‘’The worst of the action of the marauders was the raping of many newly wedded wives in our communities and we are bitter about this.” He adds: “In a matter of days, they enter the country through our communities and destroy our farmlands with the indiscriminate grazing of their cattle. We are helpless and that’s why we are appealing to the state government to urgently checkmate them.’’ Reacting to the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi said that the Ketu people were only crying wolf where none existed. While warning the Ketu people not to drag the police into the matter, he stressed that ‘’the police could only ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order rather than stopping the Fulani herdsmen from coming into the area.’’ “They should not drag the police into the matter.

The state government and the House of Assembly have set up a committee on the matter. We are only waiting for the government, he said. On his own part, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa said that the problem of the clash between the Ketu people and the Fulani had been a recurrent one in the past 15 years. Adeoluwa said that the state government’s desire to find a lasting solution to the re-occurring problem made it to set up a committee comprising the Ketu people, the Fulani and government officials to tackle the problem.

“These are unfair allegations. Last week, I held meetings with them. The 30 villages in Ketu and the Fulanis too were represented. We’ve told the Fulani herdsmen to hold on, that we have set minimum standards for them before they can come in,” , he stated. Meanwhile, a coalition of socio-cultural groups from the area, including Ketu Advancement Front, Ketu South People’s Assembly and Ketu Alliance have alleged that about 21 innocent residents of the area have allegedly been killed by the Fulani herdsmen since 2000.

The spokesperson of the socio-cultural groups, Mr. Lasisi Adewole, said three residents of the area, including Phillip Akanan from Owode-Ketu, Amosu Olofinjin and Akinola Tunde from Agbon-Ojodu have been killed this year alone by the Fulani herdsmen. Adewole also lamented that all efforts to ensure that the police, the State Security Service and the state government put in place adequate security measures to protect the people, particularly during dry season when the Fulani herdsmen usually encroached and destroyed their farms by the indiscriminate grazing of their cattle had yielded no fruits.

south western (Yoruba) people, its time to act, not sitting by the computer and punching keyboard dishing out venoms to Igbo in any slightest mention of their name while your wife’s and daughter are being defiled by intruders. The next news will be that a community has been displaced by Fulani herdsmen and that they abandoned they place and relocated to another community. When the whole Nigeria faced us, we tried our best by holding them for good three years, you people should try once. YORUBA (OJI ONU) ONE OF NIGERIA.

The story is horrible and nauseating. This is not the only place this Fulani normads commit henious crimes like rape, murder etc,.They did in my community when their animals were destrying our farmlands and tthe youths rose to confront them by killing their cattles. Since then there is peace. Let the OPC rise up. The Fulani herdsmen only understand violence for violence because of their illiteracy and their sense of reasoning that this country is under their control.

the herdsmen have no side of the story. there is no portion of land in nigeria that does not belong to someone. imagine a group of tiv men move to niger state, settle in a village and begin to cultivate any available land. animal husbandery is a form of farming. modern day realities have made it impossible for the herdsmen to trespass into other peoples property with careless abandon.

What is the practice is that animal farmers make pens and ranches for them. if a cattle farmer wants to settle in a new location , he has to acquire land legally to make his animal farm.

the earlier government makes them to understand this the better.

Fulani Herdsmen are all known for all kinds of immoral acts, ranging from killing, raping ans stealing. They destroy people’s farm without remorse because one army general is the one they are serving. Ogun People should take their destiny in their hands as we did in eastern part of the country. No Fulani man will use their muturu to destroy Igbo man farm and go scot free. In my state particular we burn down their settlement and chase them out in the night, since then they have learn their lessons.

    • Wawaman November 21, 2012 at 11:15 am - Reply

I remember a case, somewhere in Enugu State, where these terrorist-fulanis invaded. They destroyed farm lands and killed women who were alone in farmland. The youths of the community came together, attacked their settlement, killing many of them and buried them somewhere. Their animals were used for feast. In another village in Abia, they sprayed poisoned chemicals on the grasses within their grazing routes and those animals died in thousands. The idiots left by force. If yorubas cannot fight, let them spray poisoned chemicals on the grasses along their grazing routes to teach those Chadians parading themselves as Nigerians.

    From KASSIDY UCHENDU, Nsukka

The people of Nimbo in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State are now licking their wounds following a recent attack on the peasant farming community by Fulani herdsmen.

At least two villagers were killed in the mayhem unleashed on them by the herdsmen who allegedly settled on the community’s farmlands in contravention of a subsisting court order.

The invaders also allegedly raped women, burnt houses and vandalized yam barns before fleeing the area.

According to sources, the only ‘offence’ of the villagers was that they dared to tell the herdsmen to take their herds of cattle off the farmlands of their hosts. During the attack, two students of Nimbo Community Secondary School were shot dead by the herdsmen. Those killed were identified as Thaddeus Utazi (17) and 19-year-old Michael Okeja , both JS3 and SS II students respectively. It was gathered that Thaddeus’ father, Chief Ugwo Utazi, fainted when he heard the news of his son’s death and died four days later. He was buried before his late son.

The entire community was still mourning the dead when Sunday Sun visited the area. At the home of the Utazis, the graves of the father and son were side by side. Mother of the late Thaddeus, Mrs Caroline Utazi, was seen inside a hut apparently devastated by the death of her husband and her son, described as the family’s breadwinner. Family sources told Sunday Sun that when he regained consciousness initially, her husband had vowed that he would not be alive to bury his son. He died before the police released Thaddeus’ body for burial.

  46. Segzy November 21, 2012 at 10:51 am - Reply

The story was the same at the family-home of the late Michael Okeja, as scores of plastic chairs used by mourners littered the compound while some villagers sat in groups. The stepfather of the deceased, Mr Wilfred Okeja his wife hardly spoke as sympathizers trooped in and out of the compound. Mr Okeja who is staff of Uzo-Uwani Local Government told Sunday Sun that Michael was working in their farmland located at Ugbo Owerre when the herdsmen struck.

“My son was killed in cold blood by the Fulani people who had been a thorn in the flesh for our people for some time now. Michael was not armed. He was the third child in a family of seven children and had been a quiet hardworking child. “His offence was that he challenged the Fulani for bringing their cattle into our farmland. That was the third time they invaded our farmland in one week and, they shot the boy dead.

The Fulani were using sophisticated weapons like Ak-47 riffle. They raped our women with reckless abandon and impunity”, Okeja lamented. A community leader, Mr Charles Ezea, wondered if the Fulani herdsmen were rapists and murderers or deliberately sent to terrorize his people in another version of Boko Haram. Speaking to Sunday Sun, Ezea, said: “ You know that farming is our main occupation. Each year, we record huge losses in farm produce due to the devastation caused by herds of cattle brought in by these Fulani herdsmen.

We went to court to stop them from bringing their animals into our farms and got an order in our favour. We identified our boundaries with signposts, but they removed them at night. They have been a source of worry to us.” It was gathered that after the attack, the herdsmen retired to their tents and shot sporadically into the air throughout the night, apparently to ward off possible counter-attack.

The following morning, they fled using the Odoru route in Kogi State. Meanwhile, the community has petitioned the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Musa Daura, and sent copies of the petition to Governor Sullivan Chime, the Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Govrnment and the SSS, protesting the attack. Sources stated that the Commissioner of Police visited the area and saw the corpses of the students before they were buried.

Chairman of Uzo-Uwani, Mr Cornel Onwubunya told Sunday Sun over the telephone that the incident was unfortunate and condemned the killing of the two students. He called for peaceful co-existence of the Fulani and the natives, and urged the herdsmen to desist from destroying the crops of their host communities.

Hahahahaha,Yoruba people lough wan kill me die were you people are,Coward tribe.Sate Police Public Relations Officer,Mr Muyiwa Adejobi made a calculative and sensitive speech i so much like and i Quote;the Ketu people were only crying wolf where none exisit,While warning Ketu people not to drag the Police into the matter.Mr Muyiwa Adejobi your such a smart Police for distancing yourself from the matter even though those Ketu people are your kith and kin Yorubas. So Ketu or Yorubas Mr Muyiwa Adejobi just gave you people clue or incite on wat to do to the Fulani Herdsmen by wat he said indirectly so it left for you to take the laws into hand and chase away the Fulan Herdsmen or live them to wipe your community and take over but we all knows that Ketu people and Yorubas as a tribe dont have the Lever or heart to fight back becouse they were such a coward tribe.Am happ that Fulanis are encroaching in your land Yorubas becouse he who fetched Ant infected wood only invites Lizards for a feast,so Yorubas you people should take heart of wat has befalling on you people becouse had it been that your stupid late sage god Awolowo didnt betrayed our most outstanding late Ojukwu by now every tribes would have been on his own.Such thing where Housa-Fulanis mess up will never happened in the South East,we all knows how Housa was massacred along with their Cows,Goats,Sheep etc and even their Masques were born to ashes both in Onitsha,Nnewi,Awka,Ekwuluobia even reach Asaba during Mohammed Cartoon crises and then recently Ugwuobia cattle market were many Housas and their Cows were massacred and even their thatches were born to ashes thats why they now respect themselves

The nomadic fulani is a stark illiterate, he has no sense of judgement, he does anything and sees it right, I am not doubting this story, you see! this village in ogun is in soup, when they sleep with their cows, they come to sleep with your wives ad daughters and new wedded wives also kill their husband, and all you do is calling your so called govt. the police is already denying you, “don’t drag police into this” means don’t call govt. to this. Go out, fight and liberate yourselves, if you allow them the more, they will become owners of your land, all your wives and daughter will have no choice but to continue to sleep with them. don’t be cowards.

It is disheartening I pray this will not happen in Ijebu land which is also part of Ogun where i came from. The Fulani will regret their action if it were to happen in Ijebu as the Youth and old people will never fold their arm and watch helplessly. We will defend ourselves.

You have spoken well the action of these Yewa North made the Igbo to think we are coward we are never a coward. Yorubas are never coward we are strong and brave people. The only difference between Youruba and Igbos is we think deep before we act. Even at the end of Biafra war after Ojukwu ran away his second in command Phillip Effiong handed over to Gen. Obasanjo a an illustrous Yoruba man which signified the end of the war. Long live Yoruba nation; Long live Nigeria.

The one that happened in Enugu as reported in Sun Newspaper FULANI HERDSMEN ATTACH ENUGU COMMUNITY (SUN NEWS AUGUST 19, 2012). Is Enugu not Political headquarter of Igbo land. The senseless people among Ndigbo take delight in insulting Yoruba with every opportunity they have despite the fact they live in lagos and other Yoruba land unmolested. Ley me remind them once again that they loss Biafra war and Ojukwu deputy handed over to Yoruba man – Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo when ojukwu fled the country.

OPC is dead. Gani Adams is now a very rich man and he is now busy collecting chieftency titles all over the places, . You will only see the young man at various events trying to struggle with English language. OPC is surely in disarray and only exists on pages of newspapers and TV. It is quite amazing that some strangers will come to your community, then rape your women, kill your your ones and yet you say you are waiting for policemen. To come and do what? I am a Yoruba man but can assure you that those fulani guys will NEVER try such a thing in any Iboland and that is the truth.

A lot of comments really show the high level of illiteracy of the commentators. What a shame. People should know that this is a public forum and must use decent language in canvassing their ideas.

This portal should be professionally moderated to filter out junk. It’s gotten to a point where serious minded people now avoid reading comments because of junk. Senseless ethnic, religious and racial comments should be edited out.

Commentators should also be aware that their IPs could be forensically traced and their true identities revealed by law enforcement, in case of investigations. Finally, this Newspaper organization should take responsibility and moderate this public forum properly.

The Ogun State PPRO’s statement shows that the community are helpless indeed.

May be he has been bribed with cows or how can he talk like that? that they are crying wolf where there is none.

Is it fair for farmer to plant, and while awaiting to harvest his crop, the farm is invaded with cattles and the crps destroyed in the name of grazing?

Cant the Cttle Fulanis with their enormous wealth form cooperatives, acquire and establish graze lands along their route?

Government should assist them if the project is too large for them to carry out alone. The same passion they have for their cows is the same passion farmers have for their crops.

This reminds me of the encounter the late Gen. Tunde Idiagbon had with the cattle fulanis in his farm in Kwara State.

The fulanis in their character, had invaded his farm with their cattles, destroying his crops. His persistent warning fell on their deaf ears.

He set up a sentry in his farm, loaded his guns and layed in wait for them.

They came calling as usual and the general started gunning down their cattles one after the other. government had to intervene and the problem was solved.

There is no need for the government to wait until this scenario is repeated before intervening.

Shame on you, all that have been calling the Yoruba people certain uncomplementary names through this medium and even other media. You are all fools who lack simple etiquettes. That somebody provided this avenue for you to air your opinions is not enough for you to vent your anger and venom over any unpleasant situation you may be facing in the country. Yorubas are not your problems. And the early you think like human beings, the better for you to ascertain where lie your problems and how best to solve them rather than being sentimental over every issue that concerns the yorubas. With all these display of parochial attitudes, you can NEVER achieve that your aim which to any right thinking person looks selfish, greedy and even stupid in this contemporary time.

Fulanis are mainly moslems who believe in killing and taking by force. They’ve done that in Kwara State, they’re doing it in Plateau and will conquer Ogun if left unchecked. The moslems have, in clandestine manner, vowed to dominate southern Nigeria but to start with south west then south south before joining forces to subdue south east. Southerners beware.

Hold the guilty people responsible and let the laws take care of them. Do not punish innocent people for the sins committed by others even if they are from the same tribe. And please enough of the encitements.Remember you will give account of your actions here on earth one day.

Nonsense! Many of you commentators think upside down! Why all these name calling of the yorubas by those who seem to be ibos over this issue? If you ibos are enraged because you lost the Biafra war via the intransigence of the yorubas as you think, then you can still stage the war now without putting the yorubas in the know. They say he who fights and run away lives to fight again at another time. Since you fought and ran away before, you can still fight now by raising many Ojukwus and declaring your Biafra, leaving yorubas alone to their fate instead of all these senseless names calling you are busy with on the media. Rather than think sensibly and react to issue objectively, most of you are occupied calling yorubas all sort of names. You want Biafra and some of your people accepted still to be SGF, National Assembly members, Ministers, Chairmen and Board Members, Governors e.t.c. under this our Nigeria Federation.

Igbo and yoruba na wa for una o. It is you people that always travel far and wide. What is the trading of words all about. Opc. Bakassi boys, arewa youths, biafra, ijaws etc na one nigeria. This fulani issue can happen to anybody in nigeria, because the nigeria as a state does not care about it’s citizens, if we read the passage carefully you will observe that the fulani herdsmen are not nigerians. So for people to say ” if they try it in my community we will do this or do that” it is a very good step. But is this country worth dying for??? You are alive sef the economy is still bitting hard on the family let alone if one dies for the country. Who will remember your family?? We will fight any inversion but wit logic to avert any lose of life on our side, so that our country will be safe.
