FG to deploy troops to Mali this week –Jonathan

From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja

President Goodluck Jonathan has disclosed that Nigerian troops will be deployed before next week to Mali to help restore peace to that country. Jonathan disclosed this when he hosted members of the diplomatic corps resident in Nigeria to cocktail yesterday evening. According to him, all hands must be on deck to fight extremism as no country knows when it will be her turn.

“We are confronted presently with a situation in Mali, let me assure you and the global community that as a nation we will work with other nations to make sure that the problem in Mali is solved. “Already our technical team are already in Mali so definitely the Nigeria troop will be in Mali before next week. “Of course we members of ECOWAS are meeting this weekend.

Our expectation is that by next week most other ECOWAS countries that pledged troops would have sent them so that our men will be on ground to assist Mali to liberate the country. “We can no longer surrender any part of the globe to extremism, because it doesn’t pay and we don’t know the next victim. We must collectively discourage individuals or group of individuals that will take laws in to their hands and make the world a place that is not safe for all of us”.

President Jonathan expressed his appreciation to all the heads of governments that stood by Nigeria during her trying times of floods, Dana and Helicopter crashes, terrorism attacks, the death of his younger brother and other tragedies. “I want to through you thank your heads of governments for standing with us at our various challenges and difficult moments. During the floods, the terrorism attacks, the air mishaps of Dana and the helicopter crashes and when I lost my brother.

“I also want to thank them for the support and goodwill for my administration last year and I look forward to work for our mutual benefits. “I am aware that building a strong economy will lead to a stronger country and we are committed to do just that. “I’m not one to diminish the challenges my country faces and that is why we are strengthening democratic institutions. “We have our challenges but we will continue to play her international role to restore peace”, he said. Acting Dean of Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Democratic Republic of Congo to Nigeria, Mrs. Olumba Kumba commended Nigeria’s role in restoring world peace.

She spoke on behalf of the diplomats residents in the country that Nigeria’s support and kindness has facilitated their work in the country. She said Nigeria enjoys international trust and respect and urges Nigerian historians to ensure Nigeria’s contribution to international peace and security are documented for the younger generation. She further commended Nigeria’s contribution to a stronger africa through her contribution to peacekeeping missions which is the answer to a peaceful nation.

The antecedents of this conflict in Mali are rooted in the downfall of Ghaddaffi. By Nigeria being separated by a country from Mali and Libya, with a large percentage of a population under Sharia law Nigeria was destined to be drawn into this imbroglio. Whether you like it or not, or perhaps you want all our porous borders closed, Nigeria is involved. By destroying the Islamists and Tuaregs, the leaders of Boko Haram hiding in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso will think twice. I Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali become unsafe for BH leaders to hide in, our security forces will be able to contain this menace. Zamfara state ubder Sen Yerima introduced Sharia in 1999, and we are paying the price of radical Islamic extremists destroying the the North. Mali needs our help, and it is a shame France took the lead to protect French language and influence, despite 8 French hostages in hostile Northern Mali territory. This is the right decision even though Nigeria should have taken the lead, but in time you will realize that intervention saves further descent into chaos. My brother, you better believe it when Boko Haram says they want all of Nigeria to be under sharia law. That means all Nigerians must be under one religion, Islam. We are a secular country, but a member of the OIC and the Islamists in Mali were advancing south to take the capital. What do you think Boko Haram is thinking? Sure you will fight them, but how many suicide bombers do we have in the south? Even the bishop cannot convince any christian that he will collect 27 virgins in heaven. Yes, the Imams do that all the time, that is what helps seal the deal “so to speak” in convincing idiots to wear a bomb and blow themselves up. Good decision by government.

Thnks for the grace God has given to our country to contribute to maintain peace in different countries on earth. But our elders said that charity begins at home our rulers should try as much as they could to restore peace in Nigeria especial in the North. We need peace & security in Nigeria.

Am not against sending troops to mali, but we must tie that to an economic advantage. For years now, we have been playing this big brother role without any economic gain, and these countries will come out of their problems and start killing our citizens and even deny us visas to their countries eg libya, south africa and angola

    • jo January 16, 2013 at 12:31 am - Reply

Nigeria’s influence stops at the Sahara desert. The Libyans are considered caucasians “White’, so blacks like us will receive shabby treatment. Remember most Nigerians working legally in Libya were under Ghaddaffi were domestic servants, and the undocumented lived under the radar. South Africa considers educated Nigerians as parasites sucking away the few good jobs left. And Angola where Portuguese is the official language, Nigerians are at a disadvantage. I do agree with you that our leaders must seek economic influence when engaging in such campaigns, and that is why France unilaterally launched air strikes despite 8 French citizens held hostage by Islamic terrorists. By France launching air strikes, the Islamists could kill their hostages, but the benefit financially to France for taking such a position is intangible. The risk assessment from French Intelligence pointed to little hope to rescuing the hostages, but with such a bold strike Malians will forever be in French debt. Nigeria if we had a smart leader should have gone into Mali with 5-10,000 soldiers, subdued that crappy captain always threatening the Prime Minister and advance forward to confront the Islamists. After all, it is these same terrorists that have indirectly heaped havoc on Northern Nigeria. Without their supply lines for smuggling light and moderate arms into Nigeria along their caravan routes that has emboldened Boko Haram. These Islamists working with AQIM (Al Queda) have upgraded our local kidnappers and turned them into suicide bombers. By destroying the Mali insurgents of Tuaregs and Islamists, the terror attacks within our borders will diminish. Nigeria is following rather than taking the lead, and in the end France would have gained the upper hand while our Nigerian troops who are the boots on the ground will be left with crumbs. Nigeria should be proactive when ut comes to national security and economic interests in our backyard. This kind of scenario shows you the low caliber of persons that advice the President. No foresight or strategic planning.

My fellow Nigerians have we forgotten so soon that Mali is Afghanistan of Africa where all manner of terrorists men and women are breeded and trained? Of course our President must be honoured for his efforts in seeing that peace is restored in Mali. Mali is where the Boko Haram main leaders are hidding and needed to be captured dead or alives.
