The family of Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, in Delta State, has expressed happiness over the release of Professor Kamene Okonjo, kidnapped mother of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. In a statement yesterday confirming the released of the 82-year-old woman, Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, said Prof Okonjo was released yesterday morning after five days abduction.
According to Nwabuikwu, the family is highly appreciative to God, President Goodluck Jonathan as well as the security agencies and Nigerians. “The Okonjo Family is full of thanks to the Almighty for this happy development. The family is also highly appreciative of the support and encouragement of President Goodluck Jonathan; the country’s security services for their excellent operations; Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Peter Obi of Anambra, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and other governors as well other friends and well wishers within and outside government for their prayers and encouragement during a very difficult period. May God bless you all, the statement said.
Prof Okonjo was abducted in her husband’s palace when 10 hoodlums stormed the place and whisked her into a waiting Volkswagen Golf car. The abduction generated a lot of uproar among Nigerians, causing President Goodluck Jonathan to mobilise all the security organisations to relocate to Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State and secure her release.

While I rejoice with the Okonjo family for the release of their daughter, I have observed that it has become a pattern that whenever an influential family member is kidnapped, both the federal and state governments with the assistance of the Nigerian army, police and all security agencies join force to release the kidnapped. However, this is not so for the hundreds of innocent civilians. I know families who could not afford the ransom demanded by these perpetrators. I know two families whose loved ones died in the hands of the kidnappers. Terrible stories have been told by different victims and their families. We are all Nigerians and the pattern of pick and choose by the authorities at times like these is absolutely wrong. Kidnappers are not spirits, they are Nigerians and if the authorities can act when it hurt them, they should also act when it hurt Nigerians.
I still wonder y riffraff s r overpowering d gvt. does it mean dt nija is running a failed govt. imagine d mother of d finance minister abducted & d police culd nt fish out d perpetrators until d intervention of many governors & even d president. what wuld happen if external attack comes, we’ll now make God to come dwn frm heaven. if iam to say, perpetrators of ds evil have govt as their father. period!
