Chime: Bishop Chukwuma explodes

Bishop of Enugu says: Govs family shielded me from seeing him

By CHUKS EZE (Fazec1@yahoo.com)

Chairman of Enugu State Christian Pilgrim Board and Bishop of the Enugu Anglican Communion, Emmanuel Chukwuma, is not happy with the way the family of the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, has been handling issues, relating to the present state of the governor’s health. In his view, the governor’s immediate family should be blamed for the present call for the application of the Doctrine of Necessity in the state.

In this interview with Daily Sun, the cleric also said since no human was insulated from falling sick, it was wrong for the governor’s family to shroud his health status or whereabouts to the citizens of the state, especially the spiritual fathers.

Excerpts…

Many people have expressed concern over the continued silence in the Enugu Lion Building over the health status of Governor Sullivan Chime. Some are even calling on the state Assembly to apply the Doctrine of Necessity. What is your view?

My reaction is that the whole scenario is very unfortunate. There is quite a lot of deceit  right in the entire issue. I must say that I, Bishop Chukwuma, am one of those behind the installation of Sullivan Chime as the Governor of Enugu State. I gave him support and I was the only bishop, who blessed him. No other bishop blessed him when he was coming into government. Even his Catholic bishops rejected him because of how he was brought in by the former Governor, Dr Chimaroke (Nnamani). I was the only bishop and I’m still praying for him. But the family of the governor has to be blamed for all that is happening now because they are not sincere and open on the matter. When the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was sick, his family was open to let us know he was sick. And I personally visited Ojukwu at the hospital in London. One of my visits was at the London Clinic while the other was at the Wallington Hospital. And I was able to see him and pray for him. But up till now, nobody has told me where my governor is, which hospital he is; they are hiding it. But we are praying. All I know is that he is not dead. I even received Christmas greeting card and gifts from the Government House sent by him. Okay! But what is the state of his health, nobody is telling us.

I’m quite sure that he probably has some health challenges, which are normal to every human being. But there is no reason people should hide it. Rather, we should be told the details of the whole thing so that we can intensify our prayers for him. Many of us have set up prayer warriors for him because he has been a very hardworking governor. He has made the Coal City to become one of the best states with good road networks in the entire country. And we want him to come back and complete the work.

But they should stop deceiving us. They should let us know what state he is  in for us to be able to pray for him. And nobody should be afraid to say the truth. I’m still looking for a way to find out where he is so I can visit him and pray for him. So, people in government should try to be honest. The House of Assembly should be honest too, even as I thank them for their non-chaotic stance since the present impasse in the state. I think they are just trying to be loyal and allowing the government to run even when the governor is not around. But the citizens of the state should be made to know the health status of their governor to douse tension and rumour mongering. Some people say he is dead and others say he is alive. But I know he is not dead with the information I have gotten. But I want to know which hospital he is in so, I can visit him.

Now that pressure is mounting heavily on the legislators, do you think they should yield to pressure and apply the Doctrine of Necessity should the governor’s family continue to shroud everything about his health in secrecy, and he fails to return?

Well, the constitution should not be put aside. That is why I said you could deceive me, but you cannot deceive God. It is time that the Speaker and his House of Assembly members should begin to really find out, just like the Senate did during the time of (the late president) Yar’Adua. They have to urgently find out the true situation of things and allow the law to take its course where necessary.

I do not think we should continue to deceive ourselves, otherwise that would amount to setting a very bad precedence. The government of anywhere is not a personal or family property. You come, you go and the government, which belongs to all of us remains. And so, there is nothing wrong in saying the governor is sick. We’ll give him time to recover. After all, the Governor of Cross River State is sick and he is recuperating. There is an acting governor duly allowed to take absolute charge of the affairs of that state’s governance. The Governor of Kogi State had an accident and they showed where he was on crutches, just like they did not hide the air crash that involved the Governor of Taraba State.

They keep saying that our governor went on accumulated leave. But he has outstayed, giving room for all sorts of rumour and apprehension in the state and now, the call for the application of the Doctrine of Necessity. As for me, I want him to come back healthy. But his family has mismanaged the whole issue.

Why would the family hide his health status from you, who are one of the spiritual leaders in the state and one who has always stood by him and his family prayerfully and otherwise?

I think it is selfishness and greed and I do not care whoever they are. I do not fear them because I know what they were before they came into government. It is a pity that Governor Chime has allowed this to happen but I want to let you know that those doing that in that family, they were nothing before now.

They should know that we the spiritual leaders have our own powers. I told you that even Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu’s family humbly informed me about his health challenges and I sponsored myself to London to see him and pray for him.

Why shouldn’t I be allowed, at least, as the Chairman of the CAN in the South-east and the Chairman of the Enugu State Pilgrims Board and the oldest bishop, by consecration in Enugu State; why shouldn’t I be allowed to see my governor? Even the catholic bishop does not know anything about his present state of health. Isn’t that unfair? The family is not being fair to us. And we see that as selfishness, wickedness and greed on their part. What are they hiding? I’m angry! But I’m praying that the governor should come back, by God’s grace, in good health and finish up his term.

ODUDUWA USA, why are you exposing your stupidity and ignorant in public. I n the first place, the Bishop is not a Catholic and you are castgating the Pope. secondly, the Bishop is a citicen of Enugu stage who should participate actively on how his right should be protected. Thirdly, he is also a leader like the Governor who should be informed on the state of affairs in the state before journalist may come to intrrogate them on a matter of this nature and not pretend nor tell lies. Finally, it is his right to exercise his freedom of speach. So ODUDUWA, why are you worried.

Whether Oduduwa was correct about the Bishop’s allegiance to the pope or church of England, the point he made is a good one. Where is Governor Chime? Of course if you are from the area this is embarassing that the House of Assembly cannot represent the people it was elected to speak for. The speaker cannot act in good faith, when in actuality a deputy governor should be elevated to acting governor. You guys abusing anyone who asks where the Governor is been held hostage know the truth, that a few greedy people have formed a cabal to plunder the state treasury. Yes the Bishop is full of himself by singing his own praise about installing the Governor, but he does have a right to ask where the kidnapped Chime is? We are all speculating, Chime may not even be able to speak or even worse. But the desperation coming out of the House of Assembly and the commissioners show that the man is unable to carry out function of running the state. To those who really care about the country in general, and Enugu state residents please ask your assembly member to do what is right for the interest of all.

Whether in Rome or Canterbury, Jerusalem or Mecca, no bars hold. Remember that he appeared live before Justice Oputa’s Panel sitting in Enugu in 2001 and gave evidence for the Ibos. Kudos my Lord Bishop

I’m happy he recognises the unique qualities of this hardworking young governor and hope he will forgive whatever grievances and continue praying for his recovery. The bishop has allowed himself to be bought over by the reckless opposition in Enugu State . He is also power drunk judging from his utterances. Even if Governor Chime is sick, is he not entitled to sick treatment the way he feels best anf for his privacy to be respected? Ojukwu was not holding any public office when he became sick the bishop need to be reminded. There is a difference between YarAdua’s situation and that of Chime to warrant a doctrine of necessity that he is talking about. The constitution is very clear on the situation. There are instances of the present situation that had taken place in different parts of the wworld. Yaradua did not hand over but Chime did. The bishop should know better that there is a lot of political interest in the case and should not be the one to complicate political matters in the state. He has just exposed how they abandon their pastoral work and engage themselves in politics for personal gains. Must he visit the governor in the hospital before he can pray for him? As a man of God he should be the person to better understand and preach to people that any human being can fall sick including a governor whether it was announced to him or not and not be raising dust in the state.

You & Gabs Khuma are talking rubbish. It seems you did not understand what the bishop was talking about. For sure he is apolitical and he actually supports the Governor and wish him well. He is only asking the family to let the people of the state know what is going on with their governor. If he is sick, we must be told
Politics is always with us and people will always fall sick and die; governors and other political leaders are not immune. Let us know what is wrong with our leaders, even the exact diagnosis can be given. That is the prize we have to pay when we are public servant number one. In Nigeria, it is still premordial politics. The question is: when we are choosing our running mates, don’t the elected leaders have a say in it; are they foistered on them by the party? We may have a relook at it in the constitution reviews

Why is it difficult for the family of Chime to make his health status known to the citizens of his state? Of course they are acting under the instruction of Chime. The same thing happen to Yaradua even when he was brought back dead. Enugu State has given enough benefit of doubt and they should please apply the doctrine of necessity and let us see what those nonentity family members of his can do. As foe bishop Chukwuma, everything he said regarding the matter is relevant because he is a citizen of Enugu State Nigeria and has the right to express himself and make contributions. Is it a private person that suppose to be open or public person? Remember that office Chime is occupying belongs to the people of Enugu state and the money he is spending wherever he is belong to all of us. So, it is not over asking if we demand to know how he is fairing. Therefore, if he wants to enjoy personal privacy let him quit public office. After all we do not know him before he assumed public office.

first of all, this chukwuma of a man is one of the self-seeking charlatans hiding behind God’s holy name to make caricature of themselves and that’s what religion is about in nigeria today; where did chukwuma get the information that catholic bishops abandoned chime? if that is a self-serving lie, is chukwuma still a man of God? his chairmanship of pilgrims board allows him to use public funds to gallivant in the middle east without broaching the issue of whether that is a worthy cause on which to waste public funds where 80% do not know where the next meal is coming from; let him say a word on whether pilgrimage is even a Christian obligation or another nonsensical jamboree given a sanctimonious nigerianesque title. who facilitated chime’s throwing out his legitimate wife and “marrying” another woman in the catholic church contrary to biblical injunction? if chukwuma, according to him, prayed for ojukwu and the latter still died, chime’s relatives are wise to not let him come near chime if he is sick. look, the likes of chukwuma are the irrefutable evidence that religion needs serious reevaluation in nigeria because crooks are using (mis-using???) it to mislead and defraud the gullible. where will the chukwumas of nigeria be when the nigerian revolution begins? all those mendacious pilferers masquerading in white cloth need to watch themselves before others do it for them.

It has been observed that spiritual heads of orthordox churches speak more truths to politicians than their pentecostal colleagues. The bishop has spoken the truth. Out of sentiments many commentators blame him. Gov Chime is a public figure whose state of health should have been communicated to Enugu citizens. In advanced worlds, the people are informed of the health conditions of their leaders e.g Hugo Chavez and Hillary Clinton; it does not end with informing the state house of assembly. If christian leaders do not take part in politics, how then will your prayers for credible leaders come to pass?

Hiding the Governors where-about is not enough for the Bishop to castigate the family simply because they are trying to keep a top secret ,secret. His whereabout has got nothing to do with the past of the family like the Bishop is trying to paint them before the public.. If the family were so rechade before their own became the governor of Enugu state, so be it because the bible says that ” out of the dust bin iGod will raise the poor and make him a to dine and wine with kings. So open rascality and cheap insult on the family of the governor is not surposed to have come from a bishop who claimed to be so close to the family- unless if there is any other hidding thing which he is yet to tell the world about the family and that of his. May God our almighty Father restore the health of Governor Chime and save the family the agony this sickness might have caused them in Jesus name i have prayed-Amen.

Waoo can’t believe that the 99% of you that commented totally missed the argument, which is that a state chief executive have been on AWOL for the past months, in other wards, unauthorized leave. It is not important whether his absence is due to ill health or he is out to enjoy himself in oyinbo land. The fact is that this man abandoned his duty post at the Enugu state govt. house, for more than than five months now. The way I see it, because he did not inform his citizens about the nature of his condition, and the reason why he is gone for so long, this leave is therefore illegal. End of debate, either the Speaker did not understand his role to instruct the appropriate committee of the House to initiate the articles of impeachment in this case or he has no idea what his constitutional role is. Its not about party politics, the State constitutions trumps all that. That Chime has the audacity to restrict his deputy on what role he should and should not play while he is gone shows where African politics and indeed Nigeria still stand. Nigeria is actually dovetailing to the dark ages, the era of the feudal lords. Ordinarily the deputy governor should use the constitution as his guide and assume full responsibility of the state apparatus, but it is on record that the lord emperor of Enugu state decreed that the deputy governor is not authorized to endorse payment for any project beyond N1 million naira. The power of the deputy is the equivalent of $6000, even though His Lordship, the Emperor knew he would be gone for too long. The so called democracy is gradually morphing into brutal dictatorship, even though Nigerians have said no to Military dictatorship.

I think the bishop should be trying to bring sanity that eluded Anglican church back. A church where old bishop and pastors were busy marrying you boys. There is nothing morally wrong in Chime’s family not allowing him to see the governor, dead or alive. He has the audacity to tell us that he prayed for Ojukwu, oops no wonder he recovered. Please give me a break, bishop you definite yourself.

Bishop sir, thank u very much that you owed up the fact that u actively participated in installing this governor.U can now see what Chime is doing.Sir,I humbly wish to suggest that Pastors and Clergy men should concentrate more on the great task of caring for the flock of our Lord Jesus that is committed into their hands than dabbling into politics.
All Nigerian politicians are ungodly from the southern part to the northern part.Thank u sir and God bless ur ministry.

Most pple that commented on Bishop Chjkwuma’s outburst here did so out of ignorance of who the bishop is – a chameleon. He is using d church to cover his inclination to dirty politics. He is also well knowing for self-aggrandizement, hence true to type, he claims he was d only bishop that blessed Chime when he came on board. In truth d secrecy shrouding d governor’s absence is unexpected, but if Bishop Chukwuma is truly a man of God he claims, does he have to set his eyes on d governor before he can pray for him. Those of us in Enugu know that Bishop Chukwuma is somebody who likes so much to be noticed that it’s even possible that this his interview by The Sun was orchestrated by him. Chime’s family shouldn’t be bothered by d bishop’s ranting; rather let them concentrate on doing what needs to be done to ensure our dear Chime is alive and well.
