Aluu 4: I watched them kill my brother – Tekena’s sister

From TONY JOHN, Port-Harcourt

A sister of one of the four University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) students brutally murdered last Friday in Umuokiri village, Aluu, Rivers State, has narrated how her younger brother and his friends were lynched.

Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, elder sister of Tekena Friday Elkanah, revealed yesterday that policemen visited the scene where the students were burnt to death after they were severely injured and that one of the law enforcement agents told the perpetrators of the dastardly act “to burn them alive”

The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all part two students, were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone. Ibisobia, a part-time final year student of Marketing, at the same university who witnessed the incident, said on that fateful day, at about 7.30 am, she was at the house of her girl friend in the community when she heard people shouting outside. “I dashed out and beckoned on my friend to come since she lived in the area.

The thing attracted much noise and attention. I went there but did not actually see or recognize any of them, due to the crowd. “I heard when people were saying the people they (vigilance group) caught were strangers; that they want to burn them.

They said they were asking them questions, so that they could know their senders.” She said after that, she went back to her friend’s house, but could not stay there. “I went back again. I went through the bush path so that I could see them properly. I started jumping to see if I could see them. I jumped again but saw nothing. I jumped the second time and I saw Tekena. Tekena happened to be my brother. “I told myself that I was not seeing well, this thing is a lie. I jumped the third time, I saw Lloyd (one of the victims). So, I started shouting.

From what I gathered, the first time I came, they said they were not known; that they were strangers. As I identified them, I started shouting. Ibisobia said she continued shouting that Tekena was her brother, saying that he came to her on Thursday in school and she gave him his school fees. “I told them that somebody should allow me to ask him what happened and what he came to do. He would confide in me. He was wailing and in a pool of blood.”

“Tekena has been my younger brother for many years. I saw them as they lay in the water naked with leaves covering their nakedness.” His elder sister said she struggled and entered the crowd. Somebody shouted “Who is that? What is she doing inside?” “People were pushing me and I started crying. He is my brother! He is not a thief! Somebody behind me said O’girl run for your life.

About two persons turned and asked, are you sure he is your brother, and said may be I was the person that sent him to go and steal.” Ibisobia replied them that how could she send him, that she did not look as such. ‘They said I should run for my life that I would be the next one, fifth person.” The young lady lamented that before she could get to her friend’s room to call her family members, she learnt that the mob had taken them to the burrow pit. “So, I went there again.

I called my family and they started coming. The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as police were making statements. “I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. Police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said “burn them alive”. “I must confess, I was gripped with fear.

I had the intention to talk to the man that said they should be burnt alive. As soon as they (police) drove off, I saw the flames. I was thinking they burnt them after they had killed them. Later, I discovered that they were burnt while they were alive.

The Police that suppose to protect lives, found supporting the killing as well. The IG has been mandated to investigate the killing but his boys stationed in that area were involved as well, what do you expect in a society where justice is always averted. The sister heard and saw all that happened and narrated her ordeal, who could have thought somebody related to one of the boys would be around. PLEASE LET JUSTICE PREVAIL IN THE SOCIETY.

God in Heaven who sees what no man can see. You know the heart of all men. If this report is true, let the family of the policemen know no peace. Let the God of vengeance fight this case. Cain shed Abel’s Blood and God declared Cain a Vagabond; jezebeel and Ahab Killed Naboth and God sanctioned the death of Ahab’s 70 sons; David plotted Uriah’s death and God proclaim bloodshed in David’s family; if this same God still exists, may the blood of Lloyd, Tekena, Ugo and Chiadika speak…

This is totally unacceptable and I urge the whole Nigerians to stand up against this jungle, injustice meted out to these young lads.
All the people, including the policemen that have hands in maiming and killing of these lads MUST be made to face long arm of the law!
They all deserve death by hanging.
Also, I wish all the affected families of these unfortunate wicked action to take heart and be console in Almighty God.

oh! what an evil act. Initially i thought the police were not even at the scene to rescue those boys, not knowing that they were there. But how can a policeman whose major function is to PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY, turned back to destroy the same life and property? Is that not madness? All those policemen should be arrested and charge for murder. Rubbish.

‘Less clumsy in a dream’.Can anyone imagine the reality of this carnage!Been following the case but i confess that i am more confused than clearified. Something is hugely omitted. Were these students not questioned before the unwarranted death penalty?did they not speakout?,where is the accuser, the purported owner of the items stollen? What is the true story, to the direction of theft?we need clarification to really understand the story.be it as it may,the villagers must also face death penalties in the ultimate hands of the Nigerian law,as well as the police men, should the story linking the police be true. Do you mean that no one from the entire crowd could save these poor souls of the students?. Why didn’t the policemen convey them to the police post, instead, they left them at the mercy of d merciless crowd of inhuman villagers. The blood of these students must hunt them forever,Amen.

What! four lives gone for mere laptop and a blackberry phone? Is this how cheap life is in that community? Whose laptop? Whose blackberry? Please we want to know their owners. Whereas some people stole billions of naira and they are even freer than the law abiding citizens. Granted that those items were indeed stolen, is death by lynching the penalty? This type of community need to be re-colonized! Since this act was alleged to have been sanctioned by some law enforcement agents, who will now carry out the investigation? May be we should call in our friends from London Metropolitan Police. Good Lord deliver us!

In the spirit of fairness, let us call a spade a spade.Truth is bitter and it must be our watchword. The little village of Aluu must have been witnessing series of armed robbery terrorizing the neighbourhood. Vigilante and the youths team up to sanitize the village. Where were the 4 students coming from together at that ungodly hour? No night vigil, not even from a party. At worst, they should be preparing to step out to school at their different rooms at that time of the day. So, they were sent to the hell by the police and by the village head who thought jungle justice will send serious warning to others in the same league of business. Unfortunately, it backfires, no matter what is said or done the 4 students are forever gone. What a ‘SAD FRIDAY’ for them! It pays to be at the right place at the right time.

Tell me, u bloody bastard!!! people like u dont derserve to live in a human community. ur mentality is so animalistic. while not burn ur Governor alive for looting state treasury? what about that ur fool! the other day, a judge sentence EFCC staff to jail for collecting bribe which is good but for approximately $400. whatever those who have stole billions of dollars? when are they going to be prosecuted? eh, u bunch of blopdy hypocrite. they all use the looted treasury to send their sons and daughters to dubai, london and the likes while those who are fighting made something positive out of life are slaughtered before our very eyes! No matter what they must have done, they are student and citizen of this country, they do not deserve to die in such a way. To me I believe their sins even in the past are forgiven, they will forever rest in the bosom of the lord far beyond the wickedness of this savage world. TEKENA, UGONNA, LIOYD, CHIADIKA, Though your life was cut short beyond manhood by the scorpions of hatred and enemies of love, though your life maybe subjected to cruel brutality and extreme violent in your last hours by the very society that should ordinarily protect you, though you may have departed this wilderness of sorrow and jungle of uncertainty, but you will forever remain in the heart of those that loved you and share your dreams and aspiration, as for me, you who are nick named the unfortunate four are the one and only through HERO of Aluu community. Your brother or sister may be the next person hence you should be very careful on how you use words most especially in a situation like this. But to callously inferred that the already traumatized lady might be a criminal is way too much. Shows you did not even read the article very well. She, according to the news story was the one that gave the guy his school fees the day before and not the other way round. Let us agree for a moment that they were actually thieves and have stolen a laptop and a blackberry how much does the best of those two cost? Let’s say 500,000 NGN, are you saying these four lives are worth only 500,000 naira? Then you need to have your value re-examined. I do hope you don’t get lynched the next time you take what does not belong to you. The simple truth is -these action is barbaric, our laws presume an accused innocent until proven guilty. But we seems to operate the opposite as Nigerians. You are guilty until you are able to prove your innocence. I do hope things like this does not repeat itself again

I truely sympathised with the families. Now we are hearing so many things without even knowing the simple truth. Whatever they did not deserve that kind of killing. We all went to school and know what school life is all about. Somebody said that the owner of the stolen iteams should provide himself, yes I supported it. This is unlawful, be you a vigilantee or village king did not give you the power to take laws into your hand. The police that arrived there ealier should give account of what happened to those boys. This are young boys that can be of use to this nation tomorrow, why wasting them for a mere story? In a western world even armed rubbers are not made to kill, the police will calm them down and ask them to surrender their weapons, you can only be hurt if you go contrary. This rubbers will be taken to court and hear them out why they chose to do the rubbering. If finally they will serve jail term the government will rehabilitate them in prison and make sure that they did not participate in such evil any longer, this armed rubber’s will tomorrow come out and become somebody. Our police are not doing anything, I missed OBJ and late YAR ADUA. If it was in their days that community called Aluu will never exist again. May their gentle soul rest in peace Amen.

This killing is an assault on every uniport student both past and present. Extra judicial killing has become the order of the day be it by boko haram opc bakassi militants sars or by restive youths that pose as vigilante in one obscure village or the other. As an ex uniport student and firm believer in human rights,I strongly condemn the killing of those kids. this shows that there a lot of things wrong with our social justice system. We need to re structure this nation. Things like this happen all over nigeria. Police themselves kill recklessly that’s why it wasn’t hard for those idiots to give the go ahead. This brings to question the quality of personnel in the nigerian police. Criminals, ex- convicts cult members and illiterates are recruited into the npf on a regular basis. That’s y we can’t get our security right. If not for the armed forces I wonder where we will be by now. Leadership has failed this nation. I sympathise with the parents brothers and sisters friends of the bereaved over this unwarranted shocking tragic loss of young promising lives. Uniport please provide hostels for your students so they won’t have to live in the surrounding villages. A stich in time saves nine. Nobody knows who’s turn it will be next. It is very sad to realize that a great percentage of Nigerians are at the level of animals.

Imagin a policeman ordering villagers to burn somebody alive . They not only did that, they enjoyed it and in their sadistic barberism, they expected the whole world to enjoy it by uploading it on the internet.

The meaning is that the police does not believe in the the law!!!
It means that the citizens are defenceless.
it means that Nigerians are not safe
It means that Nigerian goverment can no longer protect her citizens.

Alex my brother what do you expect? the policemen use style run for their own life, the Aluu youths are angry, the policemen sensed that their contribution or trying to stop them might warrant the youth turning back to face them that was why they used style run.
Saving life and property is one the duty of police but that situation looks like face to face with armed robber. Don’t blame them but i cud have preferred they shift from the scene and radio more men.

Killings where a Police officer was instructing them to burn them alive is just too barbaric indeed. It is totally condemnable and even satanic. Nigerians we are not asking for the right thing…we must follow this issue to the end of it…this is not the time speak big grammar and go to sleep after crying like babies. They say “13 people have been caught”..fine , we want to see their faces and ask them how good they feel now about being barbarians…we want to look that community leader walewa in the eyes and ask him since when did he become God to now determine who lives and dies. Finally, that village must cease to belong to them for their (the people/community) own safety because the students of Uniport may wake up one day( maybe after 1year) and remember their slain colleagues again and the fall out might not be funny.

Mr Achebe has said it all, ‘once upon a country’. Shame to the murderers of these children. My God, imagine some bastards defending this barbaric act , saying the Alu people have been long troubled by armed robbers and thieves. Shame on you choristers of evil song. You called your self a ‘Good citizen ‘ and one other idiot calls himself ‘Williams’. You are mere animals without a future. I ‘ve read a different version of this story that says those four handsome young guys went to track someone who is a debtor to one of them…whatever…the issue of some communities kiling students is been on for sometime now. Few yrs back while i was a student of FUTO a particular community clashed wif students..after students were robbed and abt one or two killed. The oko poy saga is still fresh.while i was in FUTO i lived in a lodge where the indigenes wld invade the lodge as if in search of criminals jst to disconnect our light on accnt of non-payment of bill…truth is;the Nigerian student is fighting so many battles.he’s careful not to attarct the wrath of a villagers who most times appears to be warped abt the identity of students,on the other side he tries to survive the onslaught of dare devil lecturerz who can go every length as far as settng qstns they neva taught jst to make sure u fail…was there no elder or community chief in aluu who cld ve put a stop to this senseless murder of this promising young guyz.this story shldn’t make headlines in this century…and for the security man who askd the villagers to burn them alive…i leave him to God…before whom we wil all stand someday.

What can we say and what can we do? Am short of words. Policemen ordering that humanbeings and not animals should be burnt alive. God have mercy. My worry seriously is that there is no justice in Nigeria, otherwise those policemen must be fished out and given maximum punishment. As for Aluu, they have brought generational curse to themselves. God is not a respecter of any man, so no power can deliver them from the anger of God. Evil will never depart from that community, even if God forgives them, they will still reap what they have sowed. They conspired and wickedly destroyed what they did not creat. The blood of those young men will hunt them down. They may escape the judgement of man but will not escape the ultimate judgement of God. As a parent who feel the pain of training children up to higher institution, i cant find the appropriate words to say to the parents of these guys than to tell all of u to look upwards only to the Lord of hosts. We never deserved independence from our colonial masters because they knew what we were, what we are and what we will always be. If those “slain student” were indigenes of that community, one way or the other, the community will pardon them or hand them over the police and later go for their bail rather than publicly killing them. You took laws into your hands without thorough investigation. Its still a misery to me that the student are first sons of their families, its an indication that your land actually needs deliverance because when the innocent blood starts speaking, it might be too late. Just an advice.

what a world. Early this year, I got stylishly robbed by these thieves called policemen. I was asked to wait at Allen junction for searching which I kindly did. Everyone knows that every Nigerian has the right to use phones if He can afford them. Imagin, I was alledged of using to phones at the same time. I was ordered to presents the reciepts for My Nokia E6 and My Bold2 I laughed and lamented on the impossibilty of moving around with reciepts. They detached My sims and made away with Me phones. This happened in a lawful state. I can’t wait to take my revenge on the police. As for Aluu community, I promise them sudden death within weeks. Just four hundred souls for the demise of the four students. They will die simultanously unless they will not take water. Nigerians should be ready to mourn this community I swear!. The voodoo for prosperity I don’t have but for sinister and calamity is in abundance for these heartless people but for the police at the scene, it really certain that none of you wouldn’t see the end of this year cause I will deal with you first. For the decease, rejoice cause they join you soonest. RIP

Nigerians, we can really pretend. How many of us want to say that we’ve never supported this kind of treatment on our streets? is it because this one is shown on-line, We’re REAL hypocrites. Question then is, is it the right thing to do ? certainly not. What do we do then ? Promulgate if none is in existence a law against JUNGLE justice and ensure strict compliance. NO MATTER the kind of ROBBERY even armed. After all what is good for the goose is good for the gander. WE HYPOCRITES !

Thumbs up Tony Ukaegbu. You hit the nail on the head. We are in this country because we deserve to be. This act is a wake up call to ALL OF US, to re evaluate our values; for we are really HYPOCRITES. The killers, the viewers, all of us with our self righteous condemnations, even probably even the victims, are all hypocrites. There is no innocent man, woman, or child in Nigeria.

I am not surprised that it is alleged that police came and did not save them. pple are being killed in the north on a daily basis and not one single sponsor of boko haram has been apprehended. men blowing sirens would cause accidents along the road and still zoom off. ppl are killed everyday but it is only when the one of today is more callous than yesterday’s that there is an outcry which ends at that.

Nigerian police is so incompetent and a disgrace to humanity. They kill and maim innocent citizens everyday without being questioned. They have no regards for human lives. That was why they asked the vigilante to burn those guys alive, instead of taken the guys to the station and charge them to court if they felt they were truly thieves. How did they tag those guys thieves, were they caught with guns or other weapons? Can someone steal with empty hands?
Well I suggest first that those illiterate carnivorous police men be arrested and charged to court. May Satan punish them and cast souls into hell. Idiots.

Why are people busy insulting and laying blames, the deed has been done…the questions that require urgent answers are: the way forward for the family of the deceased; the fate of the perpetrators of this evil and how they can be apprehended; most importantly how can we really have country governed by law where equity is according to the law?
Why I sympathize with them, I pray God grants them comfort. We are in century where death penalty is almost unheard of, how much more to be meted out by people who have no education.
If sincerely they want to get the culprits, I know they can…these are people with no special training…if truly the government have been sincere about getting and killing some Boko Haram sects, then this isn’t a huge task….more importantly, their fate should be made public for all Nigerians and the world at large to see. What ever it is, I do not support barbaric restitution.
The laws should be made accessible to all and much more importantly for all to understand that which the law stipulates and how as individuals we can ensure it is carried out to the letter
