From DESMOND MGBOH, Kano
A policeman, a vigilante officer and a civilian were feared killed, yesterday, when a gang of gunmen launched an attack on a livestock market in Wudil town, Kano State, about 30 minutes away from the state capital.
Saturday Sun gathered that the attack came immediately after the Jumat prayers and at the peak of the market, sparking off fresh panic across the town and the surrounding villages and communities.
A fourth victim, who survived the tragedy, was injured and has been rushed to the hospital, revealed an eyewitness who confessed that the suspects were about 15 in number. The eyewitness said that upon their arrival at the market, the gunmen shot sporadically into the air to scare off the traders before shooting their victims.
He, however, added that the prompt arrival of security operatives, who engaged the attackers in a gun duel, reduced the number of casualties. Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Magaji Magiya confirmed that only two people, among them a police officer, died as a result of the incident.
He described it as a case of robbery, adding that the suspects had attempted to rob the market before they were stopped. The police PRO said that following the arrival of policemen, the suspects fled into the bush, with some of them sustaining gunshot wounds. He said that the whole area had been cordoned off by the police, who, as at press time, were on the trial of the suspects.
