Community tackles Delta monarch over refusal to marry second wife

From PAUL OSUYI, Asaba

The Obi of Igbodo Kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, Obi Ikechukwu Osadume has incurred the wrath of his subjects for allegedly refusing to marry a second wife. Already, his subjects are threatening to sack him from the throne of his ancestors. The Obi is said to have concluded plans to marry a woman from Ebonyi State which his subjects viewed as a breach of the custom and tradition of the kingdom.

The issue is causing ripples between the monarch and his people, leading to the whole community boycotting the palace indefinitely over the Obi’s alleged uncompromising stand since the past two years. According to a letter addressed to the Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Amos Utuama and signed by Joseph I. Unomah, the Iyase of Igbodo Kingdom, Obi is allegedly disregarding and subverting “the cherished custom and tradition of the people.

“The custom and tradition of our people is that the Obi must marry a woman from Igbodo Kingdom, who will give birth to the heir to the throne of Igbodo Kingdom.” The letter, a copy of which was obtained by Daily Sun in Asaba, added that once the king had an heir from a woman in the community, the Obi could marry whoever else he chrose.

“Your Excellency, this is the crux of the matter. For over two years, the whole community has implored HRM to reason with us and keep our tradition to no avail. This uncompromising stand of HRM is a serious threat to peace, harmony and future unity of our community.

This threat to the custom and tradition of our people looks minor, but I can assure you that it has potentials to bring about results of very serious proportion if not nipped in the bud,” the letter further stated. The letter appealed to the deputy governor to urgently wade into the traditional impasse between the monarch and his people to avoid a face-off that could lead to the rejection of the king by the community.

Although, the monarch could not be reached to react to the allegation against him, sources close to him insisted that Obi Osadume is a Christian who is entitled to only one wife, according to Biblical injunction.

Eazyboyy, the people are not moving backward! The custom and tradition of a place, especially those that have moral values, must be preserved. The bible says “Give unto Ceaser what belong to Ceaser” . The Paramout ruler can as well decline the throne to let the peoples’ custom have a way. The problem in Africa now is linked to the fact that we have thrown away those customs and practices that preserve human values and respect all in the name of Christianity. Coruption, kidnapping, adultery, high tech crimes etc are now the other of the day. Most undiluted traditions have a way of checking these vices in their domain. Find out from the present Benin Kingdom. If a traditonal ruler should throw away the respect and allegiance of his people because of his deviance to the custom and tradition, he has no need to be there again.

Since he is a practising Christain, the honarable thing for the Obi to do is to abdicate the throne to avoid unnecessary problems. The Obi can not eat his cake and still have it. He clearly understood the laws of the land better than his subjects. Nobody can force him to marry a second wife against his christain belief if he is not an Obi so he should abdicate. Kings have abdicated their thrones for the women they love, he will not be the first to take that honorable path.

This is nonsense;to settle this matter, the guy should fish out the person with the most burning desire about this tradition and demand for his wife to become his second wife. This is why we remained naked for over 5000 yrs maintaining stupid cultures and tradition that produced nothing until the whites and Arabs came and woke us up with very rude shocks, traditions and cultures evolve if they are alive, and should the man decide not the marry two wives, what the heck? why do people marry two wives? those conditions that necessitated that,do they still exist today?

Well,HRH have have to obey and marry according to the tradition of his people. The emirs in the North married according to there tradition and keep there oligarchy.Obi of Igbodo Kingdom must follow tradition and obey the land accordingly or he should step dawn completely.

@Osayemon i presume u ar 4rm Edo and shd know better, what d pple is sayin is dat d wife d king wish 2 marry is not 4rm deir place, and can not b d1 2 produce an heir 2 d throne, dey want d future king mother 2 com 4rm dier place,so dat it wil not b when d king die,an outsider wil lay clem 2 d throne, dey want d king 2 mary a girl 4rm d kindom& giv dem an heir then he can marry whoever he wish,if d king really want 2 pleaz christ,he shldn’t tink of bein d king in first place but b a pastor or an evangalist.

Osayomon, the Emirs marry plenty because of their greed for ToTo,their prophet Mohammed approved polygamy because he wanted to share wives of those that died in Jihad as a gifts to survivors to prevent the women as he claimed from suffering widowhood but today, are they still fighting jihad? our ancestors married plenty wives for farming purposes and because infant and maternal mortality was very high those days but today, western improvements to our health facilities and shift in economic system has made this practice archaic so why would a thinking man still want to have it maintained?

  8. Buchi oasis.. December 5, 2012 at 3:05 pm

D issue is that we should do away with those bad traditions & customs which goe contrary to our believe. For cry out loud, some traditions & customs are outdated, barbaric & callous which need to be abolished outrightly. Telling d traditional ruler not to marry somebody outside igbodo is like encouraging discrimination or disfranchising him d freedom of association or choice of life partner. This is 21st century, all this is no longer in vouge, let’s wake up & embrace civilization & change.

  9. Tunde Awe December 5, 2012 at 3:29 pm

The Obi must imbibe all that go with the office he is occupying. He cannot claim to be a Christian and at the same time want to be the Traditional Ruler without fufiling the traditional rites and obligations of his people. It is a simple matter: Remain the Obi and do according to tradition or leave the throne to cling to your only heart chosen wife.
Now the Obi is battling over marital issues according to the customs of his people, what will he do next about traditional festivals and other traditional worships that will soon rear its head. This Obi should quit if he cannot witstand the tradtional heat in the cultural kitchen of his land. PERIOD!

  10. Ejiofor777 December 5, 2012 at 3:48 pm

.My own comment on this is that, the Obi should Oba the people and marry from his kingdom or he leave the throne for the very woman he think is more important to him, but if he can plead with his people and get their consent then no problem if not he need to OBEY, is the OBI telling us that there is no woman in the kingdom who is am of the thinking that the Obi should honor his people.

  11. Goddy December 5, 2012 at 4:06 pm

The poser to the Igbodo Kingdom “what about the Obi marries the 1st wife from Igbodo and the 2nd or 3rd wife from another kingdom or another country produces the first son, and therefore the heir to the throne?” I think the people making that agitation are living in fools paradise. The Obi must move with change, this has nothing to do with custom. May I advice the Igbodo people; when this so called custom was intituted there were no cars talkless of planes. People marry where they interract and meet their love ones. Gone are the days Igbodo people only know their people and the rest are accross 7 seas. Let the Obi marry whomever he chooses.

  12. Pastor Kingsley Onyekanna December 5, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Igbodo is at it again. I thought that this issue has been laid to rest. Dr Unomah is a respected and well read man while the monarch is a lawyer. So they should approach the court to interpret the custom of the land vis-a-vis the fundamental rights of the king as enshrined in Nig. constitution. Besides, the King should not have married from Igbo land since as a christian he knows that he can’t marry more than one wife and his people who i know very well, having served as a missionary in that land; place their tradition above christianity can’t allow an Igbo blood as the heir to their throne.

The title of this article should have read ” Community tackle monarch for refusing to marry two wives”. According to paragraph 1, he is yet to marry the woman from Ebonyi who intends to take as his first and only wife
