Achebe’s book: Lagos Igbo group decries controversy

•Awolowo defended his role before death

The raging war of words between South East and South West leaders over Prof Chinua Achebe’s personal account of the alleged role of the late elder statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, during the civil war has been described as unnecessary.

Reacting to the development in a statement, the Igbo in Lagos, under the aegis of Ndigbo Lagos, said that the roles played by the major actors in the civil war were no longer topical issues.

“The issue of what roles all actors on both sides played during the events leading to the unfortunate civil war and the prosecution of the war itself have for a long time been in the public space,” the organisation said.

Also, the Lagos-based Ndigbo reminded all that the late sage, Chief Awolowo, had addressed similar issues long before his death.

The group said: “Indeed the Punch newspaper of Monday, October 8, 2012 (http://www.punchng.com/news/for-the-record/my-role-in-the-civil-war-awolowo/), published the late elder statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s response to a similar issue in 1983, and that should close the matter. He had spoken for himself.”

Ndigbo in Lagos regretted that the controversy ensued when “the South-east, South-south and South-west are in consultations working together for a better Nigeria to ensure that such a situation does not arise again.”

They urged that “the commendable quality of interpersonal relationship between Ndigbo and the Yoruba nation should be sustained and translated into mutually beneficial political, social and cultural relationship for the progress of our country.”

Ndigbo in Lagos harped also on the need for the South West to back the South East’s demand for another state while both sides should forge a common front to move the nation forward.

The group added: “The ongoing demand of the Southeast for additional one state, the serious infrastructure deficit subsisting in our geopolitical zone and the Igbo presidency project are areas Ndigbo Lagos believe the Southwest should come out with unequivocal support for the Ndigbo position.

“In conclusion, we should focus on how the two nations and indeed the entire South can cooperate to enthrone fairness, equity and justice in the Nigerian polity. That is the legacy we should aim at moving forward.”

  1. Truth they all was better,YOROBAS you close their evil month in this matter, what Achabe was saying is truth,so their evil and God will never forgive them tell them will say sorry,in evil they did to igbos

    • @London Boy. I would not know how old you were during the civil war. If however, this your comment is based on what you were told, then you are unfair to the Yorubas. Go and read Prof Chike Obi’s account of the civil war.

If records should be stated according to the facts, please read the report below. Whereas progrom leading to indiscriminate mascacre of the Ibos took place in the North, whereas Gen Aguiyi Ironsi was killed by coup led by the Northerners, whereas Adekunle Fajuyi, a Yoruba military governor of the west resisted the killing of Ironsi and died for this.

Against this background, instead for Ojukwu and his war team tirade the North that offended the sensibilities of not only Ibos but the Yorubas, his war arsenals were directed to the West. Prof. Chike stated this much that Ojukwu was advised against facing the West but that He should face the North.

Ojukwu’s war team ravaging the West till Ore in Ondo state would not have expected the support of the Yorubas

    • My people u only have mouth to talk but you didnt have any action and I am sure our fore fathers who witness the useless war which Ojukwu causes will never dream of war in their backyard again, because they knew what they expressed during the war. My people did you know that if Yoruba reject Igbos today what will happen to us? please let us have good mind and continue abide with rule and regulation of their land.

      • Manofgod or whatever u call urself. Stop pretending to be an Igbo because you are not. U are a complete ofe nmanu who hates Igbo to death. Igbo is a blessed tribe and cannot be suppressed the way u and ur pple think it. The fight between Igbo and Nigeria is like a fight between a giant and a strong lilliput. The giant has thrown the lilliput on the ground but cannot stand up because the lilliput has entangled his neck. Both of them are stuck on the ground. The moment Igbo is freed, Nigeria will be free. Hold Igbo on the ground, Nigeria will never stand up.

      • Manofgod, Get it right, Ojukwu did not cause the war as you have written here. The Igbos were masscred in 1000s in the northern Nigeria. Igbos alive ran back to Eastern Nigeria. There were several heavy demonstrations in Enugu, Port Harcour, Aba, Onitsha etc saying let the East stay on its own if the rest of Nigeria is killing them. Note that on returning from exile Ojukwu went about his business with the goodwill of Nigerians, for over 20years, until his death. He was not personally seen as wicked. Did you take notice the manner he was buried. Ojukwu did not cause the war but people who fear their safety in Nigeria asked for separation. The egyptians pursuing them came with a war.

      • Shut up, fool. Who will reject you in your country for standing on the truth? Was it not the same Yoruba that soiled their hands and hid behind others to fight Igbo and you’re now bloating your mouth to blame Ojukwu. If war comes, stay were you’re and fight there. There is no law that says you must fight from Igbo land. Everywhere in Nigeria will be war target.

Isn’t it an irony that igbo are always quick to judge others while their ego’s that carry no respect b4 any one we not let them see the log in their own eyes, Isn’t quiet unfortunate if nig should part way today S/E we be hardly hit among three zone in the south, Yoruba we never need S/E to be relevant in nigeria we are the only part of nigeria that can never be rob of our right thanx

    • London Boy, Please use your pills as prescribed, this piece is trying to amend issues and your first comment sucks really, why not just go play with yo-yo?? Seems the internet is just too much for your ego.

  2. Pa Awo we Yerubas love u so much coz u did well for us in every aspect of life. But you and Gowan really dealt with Ibos with ur positions, according to what i read in your interview, Achebe is right. You visited the east and see the children starving and suffering from kwashiorkor , you later find out that food been sent were waylaid by soldiers, then you stopped sending food to because soldiers waylaid the previous, that is to say you deliberately want to starve them all to dead. Was there no other means you were supposed to use if truly you meant well for the starving children? was the no helicopter then or the soldiers would still waylaid it? Well Ibos sorry and put your house in order, Pa Awo did not start the war.

  4. Finally a voice of reason has emerged. The unfortunate thing is that those who polluted the public space with the noise following the published escort from Achebe’s upcoming book do not have any facts. These irrational attention seekers expanded the conflict from the graceless opinion of one man’s action to a war between two mighty races. If Southern Nigeria which is relatively homogeneous can not be one, what chance does the entity called Nigeria with all its contradictions and dichotomous have? O God of Africa, help us.

  5. Well said London boy. The truth must be told. No one denies the Jewish holocaust. The Igbo cannot just for the sake of economic pursuit forget both the genocide in the 60’s and the terrible economic policies the late Chief Awolowo unleashed on the Igbo both during and after the war.If we forget the past, we are bound to repeat the same mistakes. The Yoruba elders owe the Igbo nation a genuine apology. Never again.

    • So, you want the yoruba nation to apologize for decision that Pa Awolowo took during a WAR. What about the deaths at ORE, ONDO STATE, Will the Igbos apologize for that? I think Ojukwu should be the one to apologize for starting a war against those that feeds him.

  6. What will it cost them to apologize on behalf of Awolowo? You don’t close the case of Genocide just because you want to co-habit in peace. Wait until we read the full details of Achebe and Achuzie’s war memoirs. Whoever is talking whatever he or she likes is just saying his opinion.

  7. NWOBODO IKECHUKWU SOLOMON WRITING FROM AKPAWFU on

I cannot call my good Yoruba friends evil because of Awolowo. But, it is unfortunate that most Yorubas hate Igbo to the core. Imagine them accusing Igbos of eating human being. Many of them spake this to me during my service year in one of states in Yoruba land. A defenceless defamation as this is most unfortunate. I told them then that Igbo has a very rich culture that has respect for human life, Igbos are eighty percent christians and the religion preaches against human killing. Let us call a spade a spade. Awo’s action was unexpected from an elder stateman as he was. Indeed, Awo and those worshiping him should hide their faces in shame. Pa Azikiwe cannot be credited with an action that resulted in the death of one Yoruba how much more than two million people. Whoever is defending him is pray for genocide cum pogrom against his own people. Awo bastardized his person by that action of his.

    • Sadly, this old man only wants to cause trouble, I married an Ibo woman and I don’t think she thinks like these local Ibos think. There is a huge difference between Ibos in Lagos and SW states and Ibos in their respective land, Abia, Imo etc Especially now that internet has turned to pure water. We can live as one and just ignore this dying man, we have our own lives to live o, most of the actors of this said war are dead! So what is the fight about?

  8. 9. THE IGBOS TOOK NOTHING FROM YERUBA’S BUT WHY DID YERUBA’S HATE IGBOS IF NOT WHAT AWOLOWO TOLD THEM,? MY DEAR PEOPLE OF IGBO’S IF THE IGBO’S COULD FACE NIGERIA SOLDIERS BRITIAN AND RUSSIA INTO WAR FOR 3 YEARS WHAT IS ORDINARY YERUBA? I SWEAR YERUBA WILL SINK INTO OBLIVION IF THEY START IT WITH IGBOS, WE DONT GIVE ANY DAMN THING HERE, WHY DID YOU HATE IGBOS? 10. Economic or political reasons shouldn’t make us forget the past or shy away from the truth my dear. Awo was responsible for the death of so many Igbos. My dear Igbos, do not hold their sin against them so you can live a happy life.

  12. Why must we be afraid to speak the truth? Must we take bcos we need addictional state so for that we now use palm to cover the truth we r to tell our children??? Is Yerubas bigger than God when the author of life opens door for the creation of addictional state no millions Yerubas can stop him.

  13. you are entitled to your opinion ikechukwu and the folks from across the niger. the biafran soldiers came to my village[then in western region] mauled down loads of young men all in the name of searching for federal troops. what do you call that. we are a village very far away from the seat of power [either lagos or ibadan] and we had no notable politician or senior member of the armed forces of nigeria. what do you ibos chaps call that? i am not writing from ‘dem say’. this is a lived experience. so you guys should just zip it. lay your blame where it ought to be. ask your elders how much they made from the war. money meant for ammunition that was not supplied. supposed peace missioners who fled overseas with their family and never came back. sudden appearance of great Zik in lagos in 1969[his poem was the biafran national anthem] may be those putting up posts here are too young to even understand the June 12 saga never mind the war.

  14. Jews celebrate their holocaust every year, with active support of the perpetrators of the holocaust. shall we because of economic reasons and because it offends the sensibilities of those who enunciated such evil policies forget our history. if you go through history yorubas do not own up to their mistakes. all the coups they were implicated in and imprisoned they claimed they were framed. what of their role in June 12, those who stopped abiola who are they? History said majority of them were on the side of Biafra in the beginning(Col Banjo and Co.), but changed when they saw better opportunity.

  15. The evil sons of Biafra are at it again. You cannot rewrite history to suit you. Yorobas do not have any cause to apologise to you evils. It is u that need to apologise and beg for forgiveness else I see the true holocaust knocking at your doors. To hell with you igbos.

  16. Nigerian Government thought that Igbos have surrendered even their thinking faculty but that are wrong not knowing that Igbos will be the last race to run away from the truth. So time to let the world know about the atrocities committed by Nigeria Government in collaboration with Britain

  17. Awolowo paid only 20 pounds to ibos at the end of the war not minding millions deposited in the banks by many ibos. Awolowo now used the remaining to do free education in the west out of which some of this vagabonds that talk today benefitted imensely. Is it not criminal for one to do that. Gowon his collaborator also criminally traded off Bakkasi, what a shame.

  18. Interesting comments but a little display of BIAS. My questions are;
Where you expecting Pa Awo to allow Igbos kill Nigerians and win the WAR?
Do u expect Nigeria to feed so-called Biafra soldiers that was in a WAR with her?
Why did Ojukwu not accept the method of supplying food that Nigeria proposed?
Why did you go into WAR when you know you could not feed your self?
Should Nigeria be feeding Boko Haram now?
Do you remember that it was a WAR?

I never supported the WAR at first. But when I put my self in Ojukwu’s shoe, Pa Awolowo’s shoe, Gowon’s shoe, etc, I realised that they all did what they had to do to protect their people.

No matter how hard anyone tries, the Igbos will remain Igbo and Yorubas will remain Yoruba.

They will always represent their interest.

  19. All this is happning nw b/cos God is abt to do justic to the millions of innocent igbos whos lives where taken in the most barbaric mana ever in the history of this fraud called Nigeria. 2015 or not. Soon Gods jugdment will fall upon this nation.

  20. I wonder wat those Igbos living in Lagos thinking they are upto by pleading to Yorubas concerning Prof Chinua Achebe memoir that exposed their real self.Igbos in Lagos please i take God beg you people to live Yorubas, wether they support Igbos for their clamouring of additional state and Igbo president it wount stop the truth from being pourge out afteral we all knows that Yorubas never even have the interest of Igbos at heart and thats why they always connive with Housas to make sure that Igbos never become presidentof Nigeria and also frustrate Igbo business as it was shown during Obasanjo time wen he banned most goods imported by Igbos and term it fake while the deadly Ajinomoto White Maggi that being produced by Yorubas is still being in circulation. So Igbos stop paying lip service to Yorubas becouse they are not useful to Igbos

  21. 1. Did Awo promise to take Yoruba out of Nigeria if the Igbos go and when the igbos did, Awo promptly became a finance minister under a little boy who was in diapers when he-Awo was fighting for Independence. If you are an Igbo what wud be your honest impression of Awo?

    2. Was there a total blockade of Biafra? Yes. This was hatched by Awo, but it was a war strategy and it worked, anyone would have done the same, but no matter who, it wud still be a war crime. So rather than abuse Achebe for saying the truth that Awo himself knows, concerned Awoists shud rather explain why the late sage chose that strategy.

    3. Did Awo as a finance minister gave igbos who had money in Nigerian banks only 20 pounds, irrespective of the amount they left behind? Yes he did and everyone knows that. If you were an Igbo, what wud you think of the finance minister? Be honest.

4.What else did the book say? Is the book all about one paragraph of the author’s opinion about a key player in the war? No. It is about the man’s personal experiences and memoirs are always subjective.

    5. Did the man spare his own kins men, no. read wat he said about his own pple: “I will be the first to concede that the Igbo as a group is not without its flaws. Its success can and did carry deadly penalties: the dangers of hubris, overweening pride, and thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or, even worse, than can obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of crude showiness. There is no doubt at all that there is a strand in contemporary Igbo behaviour that can offend by its noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness.”

    6. For goodness sake the man said it is his memoir, a personal history, and he has his impressions of many characters and events. So no one shud begrudge him over his one paragraph impression about Awo. Awo was human, he made his mistakes.

  22. Am sorry, naija govt dont know igbo nation(d sun must rise). Dia is no how u cn hid d truth wit additional state. I said dis b4, i wil repeat it again. Gowon wld hv come wit his frm n present cabinet openly apologize to ndigbo on OJUKWU’S burial (and dat wil mark d end of d civil war). Bt he sent sm1, wat a shame. Nw is awo issue n yorubas are dia shouting n making noise. Ok, bt 1 tin is sure. Nig wil soon split, and igbos MUST revenge(dat time it must be terrible). Dat is y we are called d jews, dis is a prophecy.

  23. Unstoppable Achiever on

If you check out, those Igbo’s in Lagos saying we should forget about the past and never say the truth, are Money miss road and Money Monger’s. Only a fool will forget what happened to his brother’s and sister and refuse to seek justice. Some Igbo’s businessmen and their women counter parts are useless, and senseless, they forget to realize that if they forget to seek justice today, the same faith that befall their father’s will befall them. Those saying Igbo’s should forget the past because of the creation of a state, are not speaking for the collective interest of Ndi Igbo they are speaking for themselves and their pockets, and no true son and daughter of Igbo Nation should waste his or her listening trash.

    • Achebe heard of war he saw d war coming he defnded d bulets of d guns wt his hands, d war ended wt no winner, Gowon ask d awo then f/minister 2 inculcat d ibos, dis selfish tribal man refus rather he use d hard earn resource of d ibos 2 train d yorubas, nature and history wold nt forgv dis race, papa achebe can u pls tell us more revelatns? so dat we may eat wt longer spoon wen our enemies comes around.

  24. Chief Achebe iam proud of ur pesin, u cared less 4 more, u’re a true son of Igboland, if Igbos in lagos decide 2 lick fashola’s anus bcos of dier investments in Lagos n oda parts of yorubaland, dey shud go ahead bt d truth must b told.

  25. Some fools, like you will continue to live backward, in the whole of your state and beyond, you can never produce anything close to prof. Chinua Achebe, so when legend speaks, the only thing a fool like you can do, is to sit down and listen, maybe you will learn one or two things to better you miserable life.

  26. no problem guyz. yorubas are evil, wicked, name it all,WE WELCOME ALL THOSE NAMES.but can you do yorubas a favour please? JUST MOVE BACK TO THE IGBO LAND SOUTH-EAST OR NORTH WILL BE MORE HAVEN.This issue will not arise again.UNGRATEFULL ENTITIES

  27. No matter controversy that trails Achebe’s new book, million thanks to Prof. Chinua Achebe for making us see the past in most truthful and comprehensive manner. We celebrate you and your class of men such as Soyinka, Mandela, Kaunda, among others for keeping African history alive.

  28. Your bitter, old and senile cripple, china Achebe has broken the bridge. Things have finally fallen apart between the two tribes. Without yorubas, ibos will NEVER getnthe presidency cos the Hausa’s will NEVER vote for them. Also expect a change in the behaviour or approach of the yorubas to anything ibo from now on. The so called Lagos ibos have started feeling the heat.the Internet has exposed the deep hatred the ibos, have for the yorubas in return for their hospitality. Things will never be the same again, if you don’t like Yoruba, quit whining like crybabies and go back to your landlocked and infertile land

  29. I think Nigeria has too many case to answer,Thanks to Bilie for the bold moves.is now we need legible and learned Ndi Igbo to file more case about Nigerian Genocide to Biafra and if Nigeria goes in multiple case backing it up with the fact and Un-denying truth of Chinua Achebe’s memoir,Nigeria will pay us compensation while we still have Biafra independent from Bilie Human rights initiative.ONE STEP AT A TIME,Biafra and compensation.

  30. You igbos should watch your mouth your mouth. Don’t bite the fingers that feeds you.you people are not organize at all .you go to north, you will see indigbo North, west you will see Ndigbo west.have you heard of any odua in d Norht ?or odua in d East? Your village witches and wizards will not allow you to stay in your home. And yet you still have the guts to talk to yorubas that accomodate you, your families and bussiness anyhow push yorubas to the wall hence you will regret ever knowing them.they can be nice but don’t test their patience and humilty.Ingrates igbon

  31. Truely d Igbo land is blessed. No nation on earth cn witstand wat dey hav continuesly passd through sinc d 1960’s till date and yet b able 2 standout n defend itsself. ”Soon, very soon d tomb wil b empty”, n d Igbo’s shal take dia rightful place among d comm. of nations

  32. The injustices of Nigerias civil war can never be forgotten by ndigbo community. Those who fought and sabotage, the igbo race that was fighting for genuine course of marginaliazation and injustice are those that holding progress of Nigeria. Nigeria will know no peace until the injustices that was done against the igbo race is addressed. The military created more states in the north than the south east just to suppress the igbo race. These injustices done by the military should be addressed now

  33. HISTORY MUST BE TOLD.PETERS on

my brodas from south.w,and south east, pls let forget the matter and forge ahead, i wonder why we southerners, igbo, yoruba and 9ja delta’s shld be fighting ourselves instead of thinking how these regions will grow to the envious of our common enemies, Pa Achebe has spoken his mind and heaven and earth nos do truth, even those lost poilticians from south w, dragging the matter inorder to come back to life politically in their region nos the truth even d defenders too. but let us 4gt that and forge ahead.like i said ealrier HISTORY MUST BE TOLD no matter what.CONTROVERSY MUST STOP NOW.

  34. Gowon and awolowo should be tried for genocide even in awos grave. Gowon is still life, he should be made to answer for his role in the civil war

  35. Nosyke Anosike on

Awo did not behave like a true nationalist. He sold the Igbos out to other Nigerians during and after the war.He ordered that every Biafran should be given 20 pounds after the war.If you want to know the rate at which a Yoruba man hates an Igbo man go to any agent for a house to rent in lLagos,.once they find out that you are an Igbo man they will say there is no house to rent You man who said he is the leader of Igbos in Lagos be warned don’t lay all your treasures in Lagos one day they will annex them and ask you to go to your land.Lagos cannot be having executive govs like Tinubu and Fashola forever.

  36. The accomplished professor has not said anything new except that the information is now written for posterity yet unborn. But who are those ascribing infallibity to Awo? They should waite until the generation who did not meet or know man Awo is gone from the face of the earth, then they can paint their story to the gullible. He was a man of noble spirit who achieved so much for his people but was human in many respects. Sad that the only way many will fill important is to worship his spirit. Deification of mortals is as sinful as descretion deities.

  37. Why is the Elder Stateman coming out with this ‘tales by moonlight’ now?
    1. Did he release the book to win the Nobel Prize which was announced last week?
    2. Did he release the book to thwart the Igbo’s chance of attaining the presidency?

The Elder Stateman claim of starvation during the war is correct going by different authenticated accounts. But..
    1. Was their starvation before Chief Awo instigated the food blockade?
    2. If there was starvation before the food bloackade, who was responsible?
    3. Did the Biafra high command deliberately starve the civilians?

I believe Chief Awo has given his own account of his input to the so called genocide, others should come out as well (from both the Biafra and Fed Govt sides).

It will be more beneficial for the Igbo’s to cement their relationship with other tribes in the country at this point than cause rancour. War is a very terrible and unprofitable venture.

  38. Awo before his death may have been supprised to see how Igbos progressed after taking all their monies and gave them #20.00 each, including those who were millionaires. Shame!

  39. I regreet to hear that while Achebe brought up a sensible issue those Ndibgo who have to sustain the truth wish to chase after material thing about politics and money. whom ever that hurt his brother must say o am sorry. we know that i am sorry cannevr heal the wound but mellow the pains.
creating more states and presidential zeals without being friendly with your brother is of less important. you are forgetting because of politics and not that you have forgotten.
those who are defending Awo are wrong and should know that such is inhuman in order to avoid such in the future. It may be the turn of Yoruba tomorrow. Lets iron this issue and bury the hatchet for good.

  40. There can be no progress when problems are circumvented instead of been duelly resolved. Nigeria, all in all,the first step towards amendment is the recognition of an error.

  41. These Lagos people. I don’t know what you are unto but let it not be a blind trust. Trust should not not be done in foolishness because their is no time for a fool. Awo did an evil thing by his advice and policies as the finance minister. I strongly believes that Nigerian peace will be when the war ends totally because the war is not ended. The Nigerian Nation is still at war with Biafrans Ibo origin and has in different means sold a strong lies to our brothers from the S/S which is today a big problem for them to believe us.

The SW has showed in time past that they don’t want an Ibo man to stand up in control and they have used diplomacy to Conner this habit to look like the truth is wron but honestly the truth now to be said will hel them more which the don’t know because what the SW is doing we have decorded and if the don’t avail themselves this great opportunity to make ends meet betweenthe two graet race of the South that will be a problem for all. They own the ibos an apology with clean mind.

Obj personally should apologize to the easterners because of tricky evil he did to her race and business. He is a strong hand against the ibos and people like him should say something which is why he is silent. This issue of profs book is not just a book is a peace offer which only the wise can see. The SW I know understand and if the make the mistake allow power go back to the North the game is over because the North will sure if the get back the power separate us in a way that the SW will forever regret. The best is for the west to support us purely from now and 2015.

As for the South South. I have a word for them. The should review all Edwin Clark position on Nigerian issues and his position now. I think he is an old man without peace in his heart and a deceiver who lead his people worked out in a conference discussing revenue sharing in PH during OBJ time. That was an arrangment and he was paid by the government. Ask yourself as a SS man how come he worked out on a higher percentage and agreed to a lesser percentage. Is an evil against his people. Just that people forget so quick.

    • Isn’t it an irony that igbo are always quick to judge others while their ego’s that carry no respect b4 any one we not let them see the log in their own eyes, Isn’t quiet unfortunate if nig should part way today S/E we be hardly hit among three zone in the south, Yoruba we never need S/E to be relevant in nigeria we are the only part of nigeria that can never be rob of our right thanx

  42. Anybody who witnenessed the civil war need not be reminded of the evil this man you call Awolowo commited against his fellow man, evil those condemed criminals waiting to be hanged are given food talkless a poor defenceless civilian, what Awo did is something he has to give account not only to humanity but to God,It surprises me that avarage Igbo man who had no penny as of the time the war ended, but today, they are forces to reckon with economic wise, sometimes i blame death a lot, somebody like Awo should not have died, but live to see Ibo man take his rightful position in the economic progress of the Nation

  43. Dis Lagos Igbos sef. May be they think that they cannot make a living without Lagos. I hate people who are apologetic. let it be known to you all that Lagos needs you more than you need Lagos

  44. As far as I am am concerned, as a Yoruba man, the statement from Ndigbo Lagos should bring this unfortunate incident to an end. Nothing will be gained by fanning the flame of disunity.

  45. I am among those who highly salute Chinua Achebe, on his book concerning Nigerian civil war. Let the truth be told about the genocide against Igbos, and those who masterminded it: so that such wickedness, and man’s inhumanity to man never repeats itself again in Nigeria. Those who brutally murdered Aguiyi-Ironsi; the then Nigerian Head of State, and claim innocence, are same crop of rulers that masterminded the massacre of Igbos in millions, both before and during the war, especially civilians. Let Gowon give honest and vivid account of what transpired; beginning from the brutal killing of Ironsi, who was overthrown. South Easterners should no longer allow themselves to be regarded as endangered species. In this geo-graphical expression called Nigeria. Let all masterminds of genocide and terrorism in the country, face International Criminal Court. Visit: http://www.powertrumpeter.org.

    • Incredible, Igbos did absolute nothing wrong before, during and after the war.Other Nigerians especially Yorubas just waged war against them just simply because they are Igbos.Tales from the moonlight.

  46. The so called Indigbo in Lagos leader is on his own. Who asked him to speak for the generality of the Igbos? He is on his own trying to protect his business in Lagos, These are the kind of people that one should distance himself from in this quest for Igbo Leadership in Nigeria, He is already a sale out

  47. I know one thing clearly, Yoruba or Awo never call for the war Ojukwu did, anything that happen as the consequent of it is the hand work of originator

    • Can we survive another war. Achebe should come back home before the war starts again. And this time around No Igbo Leaders should run away to lvory coast or Ghana, not even Uk or USA because we will find then there.
We are enjoying our peace in Yoruba Land as brothers and sisters compare to North.
Enough is enough of this civil war story because Our Leaders of Ndi-Igbo should also be blamed for the unncessary war. We want to focus on 2015 and Achebe should donate 50% profit of the sales to this cause. Gbam! Lagos Ndi-igbo have spoken.

  48. we will forgive but, will not forget. actually, the war was not fought between igbos and the yorubas.it was fought between nigeria and biafra which includes peoples of the south east and some parts of the south south.it was a gang- up against, the Igbos mainly and every other nigerian was happy with the out come. the igbos has since after the war, been mourning the death of millions of their loved ones and the near destruction of their homeland to the amusement of other nigerians.it is the igbos today, tomorrow it may be the turn of another ethnic group to face the same gang-up from other nigerians and it shall come to pass IJN amen

  49. It is important for every Igbo and Yoruba man and woman to realize that until these 2 great races but their past difference sbehind and forge a united front, the South will continue to play second fiddle to the North and Nigeria will continue to languish in backwardness.

  50. These so called Indigbo in Lagos, who re de representing – their own interest of course. The truth is always bitter. Prof. Achebe has said d truth. I studed in one of d universites in the Yoruba land & i knew what l saw & went thru. These saleout Igbos shd ask dmsf, how many of d Yorubas sons & daughters re schooling in any of d Igbos’ Universities? As d situation is now in Nigeria, Igbo shd nt truth any tribe.

  51. The Lagos Igbo’s have spoken well. Please, please and please Papa Zik warn Ojukwu & co before starting the war but he refused but after then what was the answer.
Prof Achebe is in America beating another war drum and some of my stupid Igbomen are supporting him. If there is war again No Igbo Leaders must run to Togo, Brenin, Ghana, Ivory Coast or even Liberia or Uk or Even USA because we will find them there. We want our peace and we are getting it kin Yoruba Land because we all live like brothers apart from our little diffrences like a family compare with the North.
Any Igbo Leader that starts another,eh, eh there will be No escape this time around.
Come 2015 Igboman must be President and 50% of Achebe book must be donated to this cause. simple.

  52. NWOBODO IKECHUKWU SOLOMON WRITING FROM AKPAWFU on

We the Igbo Youths shall defend Achebe to the core. We shall lake havoc on whoever that try any nonsense on him or any Igbo man or woman. This is not a threat but a promise.

    • Idiot, you will protect who?why didn’t you fight Boko-Haram when they are killing Igbos in the North, why can’t you go to the North and protect them. Can you remember number of times Igbos have been defeated in battles? And you are still talking non-sense,your days are numbered.

  53. Am yoruba cos my advice 4igbo pple is 2unite as a strong entity and prove their worth cos no 2nd citizen in naija and never or ever lets d past hinder ur goals as igbo thus May God 4give nd help us all

  54. It is now becoming clear that Ibos are still nursing the idea of Biafra. That is okay, but they should make sure all tools of war are ready wt them including food, ammunition, substantial foreign exchange etc. without expecting the enemies to cater for them while the war goes on because there will be another Awolowo again.

  55. You see, Ndigbo in Lagos urged the Yoruba to be “unequivocal…” That exactly is what you cannot extract from them. You cannot ask a snake to present its hands and legs. To beat your competitor, eliminate him by any means possible. They saw one from 1967 till today and seized the opportunity. That handwriting on the wall is not a fake.

  56. SOMETIMES,I AM DISAPPOINTED AT THE UTTERANCES AND ACTIONS OF MY IGBO BROTHERS.AN IGBO MAN IS A COMMISSIONER IN LAGOS.IGBOS LIVE AND DO BUSINESS IN D S/WEST IN PEACE.WHY MUST WE ATTACK YORUBAS UNNECESSARILY?TO HELL WITH ANY BOOK OR STORY THAT WILL DIVIDE NIGERIA.I IMPLORE MY YORUBA FRIENDS TO 4GET ABOUT ACHEBE’S BOOK.LET’S MOVE AHEAD.

  57. I think you are jobless or you are a stark illiterate.you are promising to defend achebe that is based in america that will not come home and fight any war.you better wake up because if the war start you may not escape and what will be your gain because even when you died the old man will still stay back in america and enjoy is good wealth with is family.

  58. I don’t know if this is how lgboman wil become president come 2015, the senate president zoned to them in 1997 was rotated among the five states. Yoruba have tradition of respecting its elders unlike the lgbo, so Awolowo remains an idol irrespective of what any lgboman would say. 2015, eeh! (Abubakar Shekau the Boko Haram leader) will rather be president than any Yoruba man suporting an lgboman, in the aliter, Oduduwa Republic must be put in place with Tinubu as the 1st Gov, Gen. period!

  59. Igbos are the cause of Nigeria problem that we are in today. we started the first coup and destabilize the legitimate democratic then. all the prominent igbo men as of then were all living in the North happily including Zik, Ojukwu, Achebe himself and even my grandfather whom i will not mention here before the unfortunate Kaduna Nzeogu killing of Northern leader that resulted to the problem that we are in today. the truth is bitter but must be told. Listen, to all speeches of great Zik, Sadauna and Balewa, they refer to each as my brothers. what will need is not the state, let them build onitsha port that will allow our people in lagos to return home then we will have the population needed for additional state.

  60. @ blacksoil you said it all. Awo is the biggest tribalist leader the yoruba people have ever produced, he was also a dictator that was why he fellout with most of his assistants like Akintola. Acedemics or intellectuals like Achebe and Soyinka are above tribalist instincts and in most cases speaks the truth fearlessly. They are the conscience of the country . Please leave them alone. NB. i am not an iboman or yorubaman but an honest urhoboman.

  61. This people that call there self Lagos Igbo group in Lagos is fake because we don’t know them and where there are coming from. Where are in Lagos and we don’t know them.

    (Therefore shame on them)

My father Prof Chinua Achebe’s thanks for telling us the truth. We have hands the YOROBAS in the hand of the lord to judge them.

  62. Truth must be told. It’s only truth that can set man free.It is on record that when Awo ‘s northern political enemies that imprisoned him in the North were plotting to poison him in the prison to make sure they got rid of him from Nigerian political space, but when the great ZIK got hint of the plot he quickly arranged for Awo’s transfer from the Northern prison to Calabar in the East. The great ZIK was in a position to help and not help Awo,Awo did not even beg ZIK to help him at that point in time because he was aware that some people were plotting to eliminate him.It was still an Igboman, col Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu that released him and safely made sure he was unharmed on his return from East to West. The point touched by Prof.Chinua Achebe ‘memoir is to bring it to public domain that once upon a time in a geographical expression some people in position of authority, and were in position to do good and safe the lives ofwomen, children and the aged, but choose to do evil therby achieving the opossite result. As I pointed out earlier, the great Zik was an uprightman because when faced with two options,he choosed to do good and saved the life of his brother Awo,a fellow southerner. He was not selfish,he did not consider material gain igbos could make if Awo died in the prison,he did not think selfishely that igbos could gain if yorubas suffered in the hand of the Northerners.History. Is nothing but record of time. Those of us that find our selves in different positions of calling should be very conscious of our actios in everything we do or say because in due course history will surely kind or unkind to us.Are we not living witness to how Olusegun Obasanjo treated Igbo senate presidents during his 8yrs rule and how he punished the Igbos for voting for him in the elections that brought him to power.Nigerians should realize that real power is not in the evil you are able to do with your position, but real power is the evil you refused to mis-use with your position, knowing fully well that every action or words are recorded in time and space. The Americans would say ” the only thing you take to the grave is your good name”

  63. I AM an igboman living in diaspora all i want say is i love the yorubas but wht i hate about them is they are alwasy connie they dont stand on there words, the war has ended the igbos marry yoruba women yoruba marry igbo women also.so wht achebe is saying they should do the right thing by coming out and aporogise to igbo nation from there the true LOVE will come in.

  64. Amuluonyenaego on

Those rascals in Lagos is talking bullshit. The great Chinuarumogu Achebe have says it all and the truth can never be hidden,Awo is a war criminal and should be seen as such period

  65. I am onyeibo in lagos and Ndigbo in lagos is fully behind Achebe. Those who are claiming to be speaking on behalf of Ibos in lagos are those eating from the crumbs that fell from ACN’s table.

  66. The stand of Igbos in Lagos is golden and positive and should be upheld by Igbo.In any disagreement you can go with Yerubas without daggers, guns and explosive. Yeruba is a community where different religious groups can live together peacefully.

  67. @ ezedan shut up your wide open mouth. That Prof. Chinua. Achebe wrote a book and highlighed what we already knew about the civil war will cause war between igbo and yoruba isarrant nonsense. If you are married a yoruba woman never loose sleep because one of my uncles married an abeokuta woman in the fifties and one of their daughters had also married to a yorubaman in Lagos island before the Nigerian/Biafran war,and the war did not separate their marriage. If the yorubas think they can fight the igbos because of Achebe ‘s book they can go ahead’but I doubt such taking place because I grew up in their environment. The the deciscion makers in yoruba are very inteelligent ,educated and progressive minded. They think before they talk or do things. The know when to call the waywards in their tribe to order. They are the people that matters in yorubaland, and they are the reason you see progress and development in yorubaland more than any other place in Nigeria today. They are very intelligent enough to know that war brings no progress but destruction and backwardness to mankind. That is is not cawardice but philosophy of life.

  68. Those idiots called themselves Igbo leaders in lagos are seriously mad for making that useless statement, Who sent you people to make such rubish statement, because you want to protect your business… Is that enough reason to make a senceless comment in a serious matter like this? Useless men.

  69. Chilaka Chimereze on

This book really generates controversy between the south -east and the south west well i was not there when what ever happened happened but if the south – west should look at every thing critically without necessarily trying to justify Awolowo and if he was guilty then they should accept it reconcile with the south-east and unite with other tribes to and this of a way of moving the country that is more important than back-biting each other.Thank you

  70. This is not a plea but a cal to every upcoming stakeholders 4rm whatever tribe. Just remember dat whatever is ur corter in your life time are giving account direcctly to God. He has ceated all men for His pleasure, whatever race u belong does not really concern Him. Above all His wish is dat we all live in unity. I employ every commentator to be peace slave hence u give account to God over whatever u instigated. It’s well wth Nigeria.

  71. Instead of us to bid for peace & unity it is dead issue we’re digging out,for how long shal we dwel on our past? How far can dat take us? Take it or u live it u can never dwel on the past & expect the future to be bright, most those our forefathers musr have been facing reality of the judgment of god by now. Some of them would have even forgotten or regretin all they did in their life time, they would be wishing they come back to make right some f the things they have done wrong. So dear commentor face ur destiny and b concern wth what God has send u here to do. It’s well with Nigeria.

  72. Pls Prof. Anya and his Lagos Ndigbo should not be cowards!!!! If they are not man enough to say the truth, it is better they shut up.The world war crime is being looked into up to this day.So what is Anya talking.Being slave to Yorubas will not fetch u anything for they dont see anything beyond themself.

  73. Why cudnt d 2 group all jst 4get wat ά single man did nd suport 1 anoda nd move on?baba awo’s dead,he’s nt d creator of yorubas he jst hapend 2 d leda,he didn’t consult any of our father b4 he makes d move, aftall yoruba as bn d prsnt nd so’s d hausas γ̲̣̣̥ cant igbo man ß̍̍̊ dea if truly we suport 1 nija, sir achebe’s Ŋo̶̷̩̥̊͡ were 2 ß̍̍̊ found wen d war’s our fathers did, both baba awo nd sir achebe didn’t take part Ω d war dem slfs,my dear igbo frnds dnt ß̍̍̊ desive, its ur tym 2 rule d country nd ℓ̊ suport d creation of states Ω d east jst doi it wisely bcs Ʊ people are putin ur heads 2geda,Ʊ я̩̥̊ great part of dis nation, dnt jst caus anoda war oOoooOooooo

  74. If any yoruba man do anything funny in lagos..Hahaha..we go chase them out to Benin Republic or Togo..a big thank you for Pa Achebe for passing that information to our unborn children cos yorubas re our arch enemy..they hate us but they cant’ do without us.

  75. who is ojukwu to turn down ziks advise b4 d civil war?. Ojukwu was fighting to become head of state. Ojukwu betrayed d leaders of jan 15 1966 coup, lbos ,so dat he can be made head of state . Ojukwu cause d death millions lbos so dat he can b made Head of state , ojukwu was too hungry to b head of state , dats why he sacrifice ibos 4 his mission

  76. War or no war,go 2 east now, u won’t belv dat d region has suffered 4rom war,1 of d most developed regions in nigeria, no igboman no developmnt in nig

  77. Who is Ndigbo lagos, are they a registered organization?
Since they are not they are speaking for them self and not for Igbo Nation and his people. As far as we are concern the yourbas should not defend AWO on evil he committed which he did not deny. Achebe stated it in black and white without miss words. PERIOD.

  78. Edenwachukwu j c. on

Ezedan you are a afool, who made you a spoksman for ndigbo in lagos i knew your mother may be a yoruba woman dont ever speek when ndigbo are talking. Awo gave igbos 20 pouds after the war and you are happy becouse of the crounbs you get from ACN table ibu efulu-efu.

  79. Kay Soyemi (Esq.) on

Those who fan the embers of hatred and disunity between the Igbo and Yoruba will eat their own vomit, sooner or later. The present ethnic bashing by both sides would simply leave both bruised, untrusting and perpetually divided against a common purpose.

    Enough of this fruitless argument.

  80. If you guys that are commenting are sensible you will realize what you kits and kins in Lagos are saying. You cannot eat you cake and have it. Keep on abusing Yorubas and Awolowo and think you will have a State or an Igbo man being a President in this country. If you think what happened in Biafra can be repeated again you are fooling yourself. There is serious hatred in the air that has been opened up by Boko Haram and Achebe. It is dangling on our heads and not Igbos alone. Any side that looses now will loose all and we pray nobody looses and we all win with love and compromise.
You have twisted history and people that do not trust Igbos are more emphatic that they should not be trusted with leadership again. Do not forget that democracy is a game of numbers. Never trust South South, they will never wish to be in subjection of Igbos. Yorubas will say ‘ Until you get the grip of a cutlass very well never ask how your father was killed’ You have done the opposite let us see how it will end without a good compromise for all.
It is a pity I know very many Igbos that would have been President of this great Nation and do well but now I have joined the group of pessimist. I wish to be in the group of Optimists

  81. some igbos were born and brought up in lagos, and worse still, have never stepped their feet on igbo land. Now they prefer worshipping yorubas to upholding the truth no matter how bitter it sounds. No one is clamouring for war, all we are asking is for the guilty to plead guilty and ask for forgiveness. Daneze, u r a disgrace to igbo race

  82. It is unfortunate and awful to read this shameless comment from the so-called Igbo group based in Lagos. check from the right point, most of them could not locate their homes in Igbo land. So we cant talk of them as they are selfish group. in fact they are afraid of future war because of their unsettled properties in Lagos.

Prof. Achebe hit the nail at the point. Truth is bitter to those who love lies. Meanwhile no where in history of the world, Yorubas and Igbos can maintain a common front. travel outside the world and witness the truth behind it. if you are defending your self or group because you are in Lagos and cant develop your home in Igbo land, be ashamed.

I cant invest there for one day and i cant put my hope on any Yoruba person because they are camelon

  83. Well, I want to believe that the Ibos in lagos will be in a better position to tell wether Yorubas hate Ibos or not as they stay among yorubas and interact with them on a daily basis. As for those that judge the yorubas base on what their parent told them or by virtue of what Awo supposedly done, time will tell but paranoia never do anybody any good.

  84. Edenwachukwu j c. on

The igbos who think that the yorubas will support them for their political ambition should wait for betrayal from the yorubas becouse they are known for that. Not only that Awo comited genocide against Biafrans he also betrayed us.he uses tribalistic weapon against Zik.so are 90% of yorubas

  85. Ndigbo in Lagos,to be honest wit u,u guys only spoke of ur mind & best u know in order 2 protect ur business & ur yorubas friends.lt is apporling dat u have joined yorubas 2 hide a wel known truth.justifying ur statement witout knowin whom u are & where u came 4m b/c if u do,u wuld knwn d meaning of injustice by refusin us d remaining state 2 complete like every other geo political zones.Ndigbo in Lagos,36 states in nigeria are they created byYorubas alone witout other tribes perticipatin in d creation?l wish u goodluck wit ur relationshp and keep away issues dat concern lgbos in dat ur relatioshp.no one have forgot his hard history on earth, except u who call his foe a wonderful provider of d remaining state & 2014 presidential election.jisie ike.Today, it is not after race, counting of miles begins but as u are runing,u are counting d miles.

  86. The myopic and selfish tribe in Nigeria ( Yorubas) should understand that TRUTH HURTS. They should ask themselves, are they better than the Igbos? Even after AWOLOWO (the imp) gave them free education with our wealth in the bank?
Just to mention a few Igbo names in their endeavor compared to the Yorubas. In Religion Cardinal Arinze is better placed than any YORUBA in history, Nigeria’s first President (Zik), Nigeria’s first army general (Aguironsi) promoted on merit by the British. Nigeria’s first senate president (Nwafor Orizu). Where were the Yorubas from the genesis???????
As of our contemporary time, all the good things that Nigeria has ever witnessed is from Igbo person or name. Just to mention a few..
Prof soludo banking consolidation, Prof. Dora AKunyili (NAFDAC), Dr. Okonji I weala (DEPT RELIEF), Dr. Oby Ezekwesili( CURRENTLY THE VP OF WORLD BANK) Emeka Anyaoku (Secretary General Common Wealth) and of course the latest revolution in Power Holding by Prof. Barth Nnaji. and not forgetting PROF NWOSU (NEC CHAIRMAN WHOM CONTESTED AND ANNOUNCED your international Thief Thief (MKO) as the winner, even at a gun point)…etc… Not to mention of the most respected african in USA. Philip Emeagwari. Is it a mere coincidence that each time there is a positive change in this country, there must be an Igbo man doing the work.
Yorubas should know that the only thing you can boost of in Nigeria is Prof Wole Soyinka whom we the Igbos respect too, because he is an educational noble and a humanist (whom was put in solitary confinement for 2 years during the biafra war) We the Igbos have annexed Lagos..we are the landlords of lagos now.. and your past atrocities towards us is gradually making your people our slave…
May God bless Achebe and all my Igbo brothers and sisters around the world.

  87. I am a Yoruba man and I did my primary, secondary Education in Lagos. I also did my my univ Ed in Lagos. I have lived amicably well with Igbo people. I have great friends amongst them.
In my own family, we have a lady who is Igbo and was adopted by my late uncle because her dad died during the civil war.She is part and parcel of my extended family.
Now with the advent of Internet, I started noticing all the Yoruba bashing from Igbos for no reason. Now Pa Achebe, who we as Yorubas held in high esteem just released a very controversial book bashing late Pa Awolowo. Now to be honest, I think I am now developing intolerance towards these Igbo people. These people should stop all these nonsense before we have a “Rwanda” on our hands. If you are not happy living with us Yorubas, please pack your bags and move to your enclave. I am getting sick and tired of all these unprovoked attacks.
Anyone with brain knows that the book that Pa AChebe just released will achieve nothing apart from setting the Igbos back for a long time to come. Igbos need to be forming Alliance with Yorubas, and not displaying unprovoked hostility. All of you should leave the South West, Period. With all these costant bashing, if there is an election today for presidency, do you people believe that any sane Yoruba will vote Igbo for presidency? So how do u want to become a president of a country if you are not forming alliance with others in the country? Ok, maybe Boko Haram people will vote for you. The Igbos leaders need to be thinking about this if they are really really serious. As Pa Awo has said, the Igbos leaders are the main enemies of the Igbos. I even read it somewhere where an Igbo man said, most present Igbos governors are just traders masquerading as politicians. If not, they will be trying to calm Yorubas down by now but they are quiet, saying nothing. Who is going to reap the outfall from all these constant Yoruba bashing by Igbos? Well, time will surely tell. The vulture is a patient bird.

  88. Since you have refused to publish any of my comments, I shall not be wasting my time again in composing and sending any comments to your articles Which I think are of excellent quality by the way.

  89. My Igbo Brothers and Sisters, the best friends you have among the ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Yoruba, personally as a young Boy in the 70s i lived in the same compound with some Ibos in Lagos and everybody were like Brothers without discrimination among us all in the compound and Palm grove community i grew up. And as a grown up person, i have done so many great things with some Igbo Ladies and Men within and outside Nigeria without any kind of fear or harassment, As a Head of my community at Lisa, Ifo LGA, Ogun state, a lot of Igbo guys have built houses where they live and owned shops where they do their businesses without any member of Lisa community giving them problems of any kind, we do not force them to contribute money for any of our traditional festivals or developmental projects going on in the community.
What Indigbo of Lagos said is nothing but the truth which all of us should accept and forget the past in order to have better tomorrow. In case Nigeria collapses, God forbids, Yoruba Nation will stand strong without begging any tribe for assistance but its better and more economically viable for us all to stay united with equal rights, fairness and justice. I am ready to vote for an Igbo President but Indigbo must put their house in order because they do not have a honest political Leaders to be trusted like late Ojukwu as of now.
Prof Achebe as a great literary giant will not wish Nigeria bad but events have over taken what he wrote about the great Awolowo of blessed memory. What Awolowo did during the war, Okonjo-Iweala will do same thing if she is a Yoruba lady and was the Finance Minister during the unfortunate civil war.
    God bless you all.

  90. Chief Awolowo himself said this in an interview,”You wont hear of a single lawyer, a single doctor, a single architect, who suffered from kwashiorkor? None of their children either, so they waylaid the foods, they ambush the vehicles and took the foods to their friends and to their collaborators and to their children and the masses were suffering. So I decided to stop sending the food there. In the process the civilians would suffer, but the soldiers will suffer most” so why all this noise by people who want to be more catholic than the pope,or are they as usual allowing tribalism and sentiments to cloud their reasoning haba!!!

  91. Can’t you (Yorubas cowards) see the hand writing on the wall , the evil you did against us some 45yrs ago is catching up with you..Look around the South- South region now, they did aboundon property insticated by AWOLOBA and SARO WIWA.. but currently they are ripping what they sow, their regional leaders are relatively Igbos now, Chibuike Amaechi, President Goodluck Azikiwe, Peter Odili, Omehe, Gov godswill is married to an Ibo woman( Enugu State) , Gov Imoke is married to an Igbo woman(Abia state) Chibuike Amaechi is married to( Anambra woman.
Where are those names like Saro wiwa, clark representing them now?You see i laugh at evil doers cos they don’t know that the Igbos are the blessed tribe in Nigeria, any hate against them it only an invitation to the wrath of Almighty God.

Yorubas beware ..you are gradually turning to the slave of this country ( AREWA AND OHANEZE MEETING AT ENUGU LAST WEEK) and also remember that as of today you people are the tenants of Lagos State..We are the landlords…

  92. So what would have made Awolowo happy was the decimation of the population that would have made Biafra to rise, had the doctors, lawyers, architects as he put it suffered kwashiorkor,he would have been a very happy man, this means that Achebe was right in his assumptions,I need to read other memoirs from other important actors of that episode in our history and not reactions from Afenifere activists and tribal jingoists

  93. “everyone is entitled to their opinion but not to their own facts”. Please could you google “Nigeria/Biafra Civil war most famous quotes” and compare the documented facts from newspapers such as Washingpost, New York Times, Richard Nixon, Senator Kennedy against your write up. I am waiting for the rebuttals of Chinua Achebe’s assertions as this part of history is probably over documented.
“The loss of life from starvation continues at more than 10,000 persons per day – over 1,000,000 lives in recent months. Without emergency measures now, the number will climb to 25,000 per day within a month – and some 2,000,000 deaths by the end of the year. The new year will only bring greater disaster to a people caught in the passion of fratricidal war, we can’t allow this to continue or those responsible to go free.”
Senator Kennedy appeals to Americans – Sunday, November 17, 1968 “,
“Until now efforts to relieve the Biafran people have been thwarted by the desire of the central government of Nigeria to pursue total and unconditional victory and by the fear of the Ibo people that surrender means wholesale atrocities and genocide. But genocide is what is taking place right now – and starvation is the grim reaper. This is not the time to stand on ceremony, or to go through channels or to observe the diplomatic niceties, The destruction of an entire people is an immoral objective even in the most moral of wars. It can never be justified; it can never be condoned.”
Mr. Richard Nixon, September 9, 1968- During the Presidential Campaign.
“.It’s (mass starvation) is a legitimate aspect of war, ” Anthony Enahoro, Nigerian Commissioner for Information at a press conference in (New York, July 1968)
“Starvation is a legitimate weapon of war, and we have every intention of using it against the rebels, ”
Mr Alison Ayida, Head of Nigerian Delegation, Niamey Peace Talks, Republic of Niger, July 1968) ”

All is fair in war, and starvation is one of the weapons of war. I don’t see why we should feed our enemies fat in order for them to fight harder.”
Chief Obafemi Awolowo (Nigerian Minister of Finance, July 28th 1969) ” ,

The Igbos must be considerably reduced in number” (Lagos Policeman quoted in New York Review, 21 December, 1967)
One word now describes the policy of the Nigerian military government towards secessionist Biafra: genocide. It is ugly and extreme but it is the only word which fits Nigeria’s decision to stop the International Committee of the red Cross, and other relief agencies, from flying food to Biafra ,
    ” Washington Post (editorial) July 2, 1969 ”

In some areas outside the East, Igbos were killed by local people with at least the acquiescence of the federal forces, 1000 Igbo civilians perished in Benin in this way”
(Max Edward- Reporter on the ground-New York Review, 21 December 1967) ”

it a pity also that Wole Soyinka’s Book … THE MAN DIED .. was Banned because he CLASSIFIED THE WAR AS FRACTICIDAL . Why did Gowon /Awo Ban the Book? .
‘TRUTH IS RSERVED FOR NOBLE CHARACTERS’ &
NOBLE MINDS MUST WEAR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SPECTACLE FROM THAT OF PERPETRATORS OF THE IGNOBLE ACT AGAINST HUMANITY!
Achebe has not spoken differently from these voices

  94. Gowon has not said anytin yet cos he has notin to say,all Prof said was d truth. Why are d Yorubas killing themselves? For d Igbos in Lagos, jst calm down, nobody wud burn down ur houses n investments there wen d truth is said,i believe d Yorubas are not like d Northern animals, they reason like humans. For those bastards insulting Prof Chinua Achebe, may they never have gray hairs, may they never be as old as Prof. In Jesus name. Amen.

  95. If I am a yorubaman, I will defend Pa Awolowo as I will defend Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu (Dike Dioramma Ndigbo & Eze Tgbo Gburugburu) one million times not because I particularly like what be did to the Ibos but because these people love their people and are willing to lay down their lives for them. Awo went to prison because of his people while Ojukwu fought the war and eventually went on exile because of his people also. A lot of our people are not their brithers, keepers especially when they know that you need them either in public or private life. They rather prefer outsiders and when they are hooked, they start to look homewards. Many of those Lagos Ndigbo are better outside than inside; they bought swamps from yoruba and use billion to sand-fill them instead of going home to provide jobs for their people that go about courting for recognition on what the yorubas coulld do for the ibos. As I writting this commenting the yorubas have nothing to offer the ibos talk more of supporting the ibos to get extra state or the president. My advice for Ibos is for the Ibos to forget all that had happened, look forward and inwards as a way to achieving greatness.

  96. The truth is that the man who wrote this might not be an igbo man,he may be all this half bake igbos in lag “my mama say i be igbo” i have been in lagos for more than 18years but i cannot be fool by any one not even yoluba nation can fool me.i believe in truth and that is what chinua is preaching.igbos are great people that’s why every tribe envy them.even after the killing of those 2million people we are still the largest tribe in nigeria, even when awo gave us 20 naira for a start still we use it to become most successful individuals.so even if hausa & yoluba join together they cannot cover the moon. Ndi igbo bu onwa na nigeria.onye anoghi mgbe eliri ozu na ebido na njo abo ya.atuolu omalu omalu, ma atuolu ofeke ofenye isi ya na offia.

  97. Most ibos have excel in most south-west region on harm and unmolested, yet the yorubas are bad people, However they have had their people kille and their properties burnt to ashes in the north, yet yorubas are evil, why don’t they leave yorubas alone, they called for war and they saw war, why all this tyrant words against yorubas, they should instead blame their greedy leaders, who wanted to rule at all cost despite plead by Awo not to go to war.

  98. I want my yoruba friends to understand that the igbos are the best friends they can get in Nigeria.I know you people love Awo,but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t tell the civil war story as it was. That igbos are in Lagos ,build and do business doesn’t mean that we have become slaves to the yorubas. The problem with most of those talking is that they do not travel out of yorubaland, because if they travel to igboland they will see yoruba people in even in remote villages living and doing their businesses. If you doubt what I’m saying travel down to remote villages in Nnewi south local govt area, you will see many yorubas, some even married igbos, just as some igbos married them.If you go to Onitsha you see many yorubas doing their businesses as well but no igboman is abusing any yorubsman on the pages of newspapper simply because yorubas are living and doing business in igboland. As for the civil war,the yorubas didn’t fare better while the war lasts. As a boy growing up in lagos island in the 70s I still remember what yoruba oldmen told me about their experiences in the hands of the Northerners during the war. They pointed to me some houses that formerly belonged to yorubas but was forceifully taken from them by the Northerners. They even told me how some yorubamen were forced to war front and their wives taken over by some Northern masters. When they narrate those things to me I could sense the sorrow and anger in their soul and mind.Let me also remind you that recently the former military governor of NorthWest region,Alhaji Faruk made a similar statemant, that the Northern muslim intimidated the yorubas to join the fight. So do not see igbos as a treat to your freedom and prosperity but as partner and good friend. As for our hero Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu you people always castigate, was he not the one that insisted that succession in the military should be on rank and merit, that Ademulugun or the other yoruba man should suceed Aguiyi Ironsi? Was that not part of the conditions he gave for settlement?AND THE BEGINING OF NIGERIA ‘WOES STARTED FROM THE MOMENT MERIT WAS MURDERD ON THE ALTER OF DEMERIT.To my Igbo,Calabar,Ijaw and Akwa ibom brothers and sisters,it is time we forgive the yorubas because of people like PROF.WOLE SOYINKA and TAI SOLARIN of the blessed memory, but we won’t forget because history cannot be forgoteen.
