A former Environment Minister and current United Nations Deputy Secretary General,  Amina Mohammed, has said that the challenges that has plagued Nigerians for years in the Niger Delta and Ogoni land has made it imperative for women to carry the dividends of the investments made in the Niger Delta and in Ogoni land.

The UN Deputy Secretary General who stated this when she paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibril in his office, in Abuja, said that women deserve to be compensated for carrying and sharing the burden the challenges the Niger Delta and Ogoni challenges that plagued Nigerians for years.

She said: “When we say people and planet, planet part of it and the people part of it is all here and I think we really need to strengthen that role and to know that in the places that we suffer most, it is the environment that is the solution to taking women out of that poverty and empowering them and giving them what is their right and not charity.”

Amina stressed on how integral Environment is to development and how central it was to women empowerment, noting that the use green bonds and pipelines would create jobs for women and also help them overcome the barriers that are there to their wellbeing.

“We need to use the green bonds and also look at what the pipeline means in Nigeria, what it results in terms of getting jobs for women and how it can show a new way for many other African countries to deal with this”

In his response, Environment minister, Jibril said the World Bank has responded in respect to the additional funding of the ministry’s new map project.

He said the ministry is being assisted with costing of all ecological problem that may need intervention and warrant further release of additional 1billion dollar.

Jibril implored the UN Deputy Secretary General to collaborate and give technical support in periodic assessment of climate benefit of public intervention.
