A Northern youth group, Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has endorsed a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed to run for president in 2019.
In a statement signed by its national chairman, Elliot Ariyo, the group stated that Mohammed was selected from among 14 candidates before it arrived at the choice of two candidates which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The group explained why they are supporting Mohammed in 2019 and warned that they will not support attempt by any political party to field a presidential candidate from the South.
“We believe that Bala Mohammed is a detribalised Nigerian who does not attach sentiments of religion and ethnicity in his dealings with any citizen. He also has goodwill, nationally and internationally. His credibility is unquestionable and his loyalty and interest for the North, within the national interest is surely not in doubt.”
The group stated that their move was a pre-emptive step to avert what they describe as the mistake of 2011 and 2015.
“The experiences of 2011 and 2015 still remains fresh in our minds.
“To show our commitment towards this goal, the NYLF had shortlisted and screened candidates for the 2019 presidency.
“Our elders are also advised to steer clear from supporting any presidential candidate from the South in 2019 as we cannot afford to gamble with the presidency”, the statement read.
