There was pandemonium yesterday morning on Lagos Island, as gun-wielding hoodlums, popularly called ‘Area Boys,’ wreaked havoc in the area.
Four persons were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed.
The fight, according to a witness, was a battle of supremacy between two factional gangs, which engaged in a free-for-all, after a football tournament in the area.
The hoodlums, during the clash, which lasted for about 50 minutes, grounded activities around Lafiaji, Okesuna and Campos areas of Lagos Island. Police authorities in the area said no death was recorded during the clash.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Lion Building Police Station, Folashade Tanaruno, a Chief Superintendent of Police, led police patrol teams to the scene to quell the crisis.
As at 2.30pm, when Daily Sun visited the scene, normalcy had returned to the area.
According Martins Williams, a resident, “it was a bloody clash. It was a clash between area boys in the area. There was an argument, which led to a fight between the two gangs. Guns, machetes, broken bottles and charms were used during the fracas. More than four persons died and many others were injured. Vehicles were also torched.”
Another witness, Babs Ojo, said, “some people were killed during the fight. Although I cannot confirm the number of people who died, I can tell you that the fight was bloody. The area boys were shooting everywhere. Shop owners closed their shops and ran for their lives.
