The Amanayanbo of Nembe Kingdom in Bayelsa state, His Eminence, Dr. Edmund Maduabebe Daukoru, Mingi 12th, has identified corruption in high places for the recent upsurge in outbursts of hate speeches, ethnic agitations, militancy, crisis between herdsmen and farmers and increased Boko Haram attacks.

Daukoru, who was a former Minister of Petroleum under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said the release of mind-bogging figures of corruption has unsettled many of those involved.

The monarch, who is also the Chairman of the South- South Monarchs Forum, stated this over the weekend during a seminar on National Unity and Security organised by the national headquarters of the Department of State Security ( DSS).

The monarch also said that Nigerians needed to recapture the spirit of patriotism and self-sacrifice that propelled the nation’s founding fathers.

Daukoru, who called for bold actions in response to some of the major challenges facing the nation such as poverty and resulting from corruption and dwindling natural resources, moral decay and the constant threat to the peace and security of the nation, also expressed fears that Nigeria would find it difficult to maintain its leadership position in Africa if it was fragmented into smaller semi-autonomous units.

He, however, commended Acting- President Yemi Osinbajo for sustaining the Federal Government’s policy of embracing dialogue with aggrieved groups from different parts of the country with a view to find common grounds for mutual understanding.
