No fewer than four persons were allegedly injured when crisis broke out in Gboko and Makurdi areas of Benue State after the two major political parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) engaged in a free-for- all. Daily Sun gathered that some people suspected to be political thugs of one political group clashed with suspected thugs of the rival party during a meeting in Gboko.
According to eyewitnesses, ACN members were said to be holding a meeting at Amaco Hotel, Gboko when thugs allegedly belonging to the PDP stormed the venue, thus triggering the clash. The thugs, Daily Sun learnt, had earlier attacked the residence of the Member Representing Gboko Federal Constituency, John Dyegh and injured some of his aides as well as his mother.
A popular Benue gospel singer, Mike Jersualem was also injured by the thugs who thereafter moved to the Amaco Hotel, venue of the ACN meeting. In a related development, some political thugs yesterday besieged the Wurukum Round About and disrupted the free flow of traffic for hours while residents of the areas and commuters scampered for safety.
Our source, who witnessed the mayhem said one of the political parties was on campaign, preparatory for the forthcoming local government elections in the state when another rival party attacked the campaign train which resulted in the fight.
The hoodlums torched two vehicles while the clash lasted. Confirming the story, the Public Relations Officer of Benue State police command, DSP Daniel Ezeala, disclosed that the vandalised vehicles had been taken to the command’s headquarters. Ezeala explained that political thugs of an unknown party attacked some persons, who were holding a meeting at the hotel in Gboko and injured two of them who had been hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi.
He, however, said no arrest had been made so far in the two incidents but maintained that investigation was ongoing to unravel those behind the attack.
