2015 presidency: Amaechi disowns campaigners

From CHRIS ANUCHA, Port Harcourt

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, has disowned those campaigning for him and the governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, for the 2015 presidential election. It would be recalled that the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, once suggested that the duo of Amaechi and Lamido be paired to contest for the exalted positions of president and vice president, respectively, under the umbrella of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The suggestion by the former Board of Trustees (BoT) of PDP has continued to attract criticisms across the country, and unsettled president Jonathan’s political camp. Some individuals have gone ahead to purchase vehicles, print posters and other campaign materials, soliciting people’s support in that direction.

Addressing newsmen at the Government House, Port Harcourt yesterday, Amaechi disclosed how he saw some vehicles in the Northern part of the country, bearing his poster and that of Sule Lamido, campaigning for them for 2015 election.

He said it was too early to start campaigning for 2015 election, but added that those behind the campaign were strictly on their own. The governor who tactically avoided making categorical statement on his stance on 2015 , however, said he was undecided yet on 2015.

“I have never attended any political meeting on 2015,” he insisted. But he said his political opponents had always wanted him make a categorical statement concerning 2015, so that they could capitalise on that when he eventually takes decision to contest for any political position in 2015. On the ceding of some oil wells in Rivers to Bayesla State, the governor expressed satisfaction with the way the president was handling the matter, adding that he was told by the president, not to make public comments on the matter anymore.

He disclosed that 71 oil wells in Abonnema were about to be given to Bayelsa, adding that the move was halted, when the Kalabaris cried out. The governor also disclosed that 46 oil wells belonging to Rivers State, had just been given to Abia State.

“There is rumour that they want to emasculate Rivers people,” he alleged. Amaechi, who had been having running battles with civil servants over social welfare arrears being deducted from their salaries, said he had taken time to explain to them about the deductions, which included, the pension scheme. He, however, ordered that the deductions be halted, because of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, adding that it would continue in February 2013.

The governor also used the opportunity to explain some of the achievements recorded in the areas of education, agriculture, power , security, hosing, water, road construction, including the controversial monorail. He also used the opportunity to explain why he was still withholding the monthly allocations of three local government areas, namely, Ikwerre, Obio/Akpo and Eleme.

According to him, the affected local government chairmen failed to heed his advice to demolish illegal structures, which had been constituting nuisance in their domains.
