The newly elected chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State chapter, Apostle General (Dr) Emmanuel Otutubuike Agomuo, has urged christians in the country to stay away from politics and face the things of God.
Speaking after he was elected the 4th Abia CAN chairman, Agomuo said, “We are Christians and not politicians, Christians should stay away from politics, we can vote, but we don’t have to be partisan.”
Blaming the disunity in the church today on members’ involvement in partisan politics, the new CAN chairman said it was for this reason that his mission would be to unify Christians in Abia State where he claimed there were a lot of problems.
“Christians in Abia don’t agree, they are not one, so, I think I have that mind or the mission to come and unite the christians so that we can be talking with one voice because we are serving one God.”
Agomuo said his administration would equally focus on leadership training for the members, which he said they have not been having before now, stressing, “We only attend government functions and come back. So, in the next quarter of this my administration, I’m going to organize a workshop where we will discuss the qualities of a leader.”
He also said that the purpose of organizing the workshop would be to address the issue of the increase in crime rate in society despite the fact that churches are spreading everywhere on daily basis, and find a away to arrest the situation.
Archbishop (Prof) David Ebelechukwu, South East CAN chairman, who monitored the election, said it was free and fair and that the unity of purpose witnessed during the election was fantastic.
Ebelechukwu said Abia CAN had never experienced election in this way, adding that Nigeria should emulate what the christian body did in Abia so that elections in the country would be free, fair and rancour-free.
Deacon Vincent Ogbonna who was elected Assistant Secretary said this was the first time CAN in Abia was having a smooth transition through election, stating that before now, it used to be selection.
He pledged his support for the new chairman, stating his belief that he would take Abia CAN to a new level.
