The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested one Christopher Nnabuihe over production and selling of fake peal powder in Calabar metropolis.
The NAFDAC Coordinator in Cross River State, Dr. Isaac Kolawole, who disclosed the arrest in a statement made available to DAILY SUN yesterday, said they have received complaints of adulterated peak milk from consumers which prompted them to swing into action leading to the arrest of the suspect while making supplies to stores.
Kolawole said Nnabuihe, 56, who resides at No 42, Cameroun Road, Calabar, confessed to be refilling 440g (promotion pack) of peak powdered milk with another cheaper brand of milk product which he buys in large quantity (50kg) and uses to refill the packs.
He said the suspect buys already printed 440g packs from Ariaria Relieve Market Aba, Abia state from where he takes them to Calabar for refilling and seal them up with candle light.
He pointed out that taking such an unwholesome/questionable product may result to some health problems as nobody can vouch for the content of the fake product and the Good Hygienic Practice (GHP).
He added that laboratory analysis will be conducted on the product, warning that hard time awaits those who indulge in adulteration of NAFDAC regulated products as the agency will come down hard on them.
In a confessional statement, Nnabuihe said, “one 50kg of the milk will fill 27 pieces (two cartons and three pieces three pieces) and I sells one carton of the fake peak milk at N6000 and make a profit of N1,000 per carton.”
According to him, you can only suspect it to be fake from the taste as the packaging of the fake and original appear the same.
It was leant that the prosecution of the suspect, Christopher Nnabuihe, has commenced at a Magistrate Court in Calabar as hearing continues on October 28.
