Bolanle Olukanmi is one of the trail blazers on television and if you are an ardent viewer of Ebony TV, then you will know she is a regular face.  She is one of the hosts of Moments on Ebony TV and she also hosted Project Fame too. Bolanle is not just a pretty face; she’s also a custodian of a dual degree from Loyola University, Chicago in Communications and International Studies. This young multi-talented lady with a warm smile that can melt an iron heart reflected on her relationship with her mum in this interview and many other things.

What’s your mum’s name?

My mum’s name is Yemisi Olukanni.

What does she do?

She’s an amazing homemaker, mentor and grandmother.

When last did you visit her?

I visited her last week.

What’s the food she cooks that you like most?

I love her cabbage sauce a lot.

What’s her favourite meal?

My mum loves plantains.

What’s your relationship with your mum like; are you very close or not? 

My mum and I are extremely close.

What makes her happy?

She’s always happy when you have a healthy relationship with God and call to check on her.

What makes her sad?

My mum will be sad when you aren’t in a spiritually sound place.

Does she have a pet name for you?

Yes, she does. She calls me Omobolanle.

What did you get her for Mother’s Day?

I gave her a spa day.

What’s the best advice your mum has ever given you that you cherish?

I think looking at the way she lives her life on a daily basis is a great advice. She loves God with so much fervor too.

Oftentimes many teenagers tend to be at war with their mums. What was your experience with her as a teenager?

Interestingly, I was a nuisance (laughs ). I was very rebellious as a teenager.

What did she tell you about boys?

She always told me back then to face my studies.

Was your mum very strict?

Yes, she was very strict but I am glad she was. I avoided making a lot of mistakes, because she was there to guide me.

Did she ever use the cane?

Please tell me which Nigerian mother didn’t use the cane? Of course she did.

As a child, were you outgoing or introverted?

Yes, I was very outgoing. I remember in primary school, I won an award in primary four for being the most curious. Basically, I asked too many questions.

What was your childhood like?

I had a great childhood. I am very close to my sisters and have supportive parents.

Who are you closer to between your parents?

Well, I am close to both my parents.

What features did you inherit from your mum?

None; I don’t look like my mum at all. I look more like my dad, but I inherited my maternal grandmother’s height.

What was her reaction when you told her you wanted to go into broadcasting?

She was very supportive and always made sure that she watched my shows and attended special events that I am part of.

Tell us about a memorable sacrifice she made for you as a child?

There are so many sacrifices that she has made and it’s hard to name one. But I think the most impressive is her diligence in prayer. She has been waking up at 5 am since I was young to spend time in prayer for my sisters and I.

Is she very fashionable?

My mum is one the most fashionable persons I know. She always looks so good.
